Food systems are currently challenged by a difficult balance: they rely heavily on natural resources while simultaneously generating significant volumes of waste, all under increasing pressure to decarbonize operations and close material loops. In this context, this study proposes strategic pillars for circular practices in the food industry, with an emphasis on the transformation of waste and by-products into high value-added resources through bio-based processes supported by biorefineries, in line with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). To underpin this proposal, a PRISMA-guided conte

This work focuses on the development of electro-absorption and photoelectro-absorption technologies to treat gases produced by a synthetic waste containing the highly volatile perchloroethylene (PCE). To do this, a packed absorption column coupled with a UV lamp and an undivided electrooxidation cell was used. Firstly, it was confirmed that the absorption in a packed column is a viable method to achieve retention of PCE into an absorbent-electrolyte liquid. It was observed that PCE does not only absorb but it was also transformed into phosgene and other by-products. Later, it was confirmed tha

Evaluating the occurrence of microorganics helps to understand sources and processes which may be controlling the transport and fate of emerging contaminants (ECs). A study was carried out at the contrasting instrumented environmental observatory sites at Oxford, on the peri-urban floodplain gravel aquifer of the River Thames and Boxford, in the rural valley of the River Lambourn on the chalk aquifer, in Southern England to explore the use of ECs to fingerprint contaminant sources and flow pathways in groundwater. At Oxford compounds were typical of a local waste tip plume (not only plasticise

This paper deals with the performances obtained in full scale anaerobic digesters co-digesting waste activated sludge from biological nutrients removal wastewater treatment plants, together with different types of organic wastes (solid and liquid). Results showed that the biogas production can be increased from 4000 to some 18,000 m3 per month when treating some 3-5 tons per day of organic municipal solid waste together with waste activated sludge. On the other hand, the specific biogas production was improved, passing from 0.3 to 0.5 m3 per kgVS fed the reactor, when treating liquid effluents

The use of carbon mineralization to produce carbonates from alkaline industrial wastes is gaining traction as a method to decarbonize the built environment. One of the environmental concerns during this process is the use of acids, which are required to extract Ca2+ or Mg2+ from the alkaline waste to produce carbonates. Conventionally, acids such as hydrochloric, nitric, or sulfuric are used which allow for the highest material recovery but are corrosive and difficult to regenerate as they are utilized in a linear fashion and generate additional process waste. An alternative is to use regenera

Keratin is an abundant, recalcitrant structural protein that constitutes the primary component of several animal wastes, particularly chicken feathers. Because of their potential and availability, various technologies, such as anaerobic biodigestion, have been used to degrade keratin and transform feathers into biogas and other value-added products. However, due to their fibrous architecture and rigid structure, keratinous materials are elastic, water-insoluble, and enzymatically resistant, which makes natural degradation difficult. In this sense, before using chicken feathers as feedstock in

Apples (Malus domestica) and plums (Prunus domestica) are important fruit crops belonging to the Rosaceae family. The edible parts of fruits and seeds contain phytochemicals; however, the seeds are rich in cyanogenic glycosides (CNGs), which release toxic hydrogen cyanide (HCN) upon the loss of plant cell integrity. This review aims to explore the quantitative and qualitative CNG profiles in apples and plums, focusing on their distribution in different parts of the fruit, changes during fruit development, and environmental impacts on their biosynthesis. It also discusses the intricate dynamics

The growing CO2 emissions from cement production and solid waste present significant challenges to achieving carbon neutrality, demanding sustainable strategies for the carbon-neutral construction sector. Producing biochar-driven concrete via the thermochemical conversion of organic waste offers an eco-friendly approach to mitigating CO2 emissions from cement production while simultaneously addressing the challenge of large-scale solid waste management. The establishment of biochar as a carbon-negative product makes it a promising alternative to traditional cementitious materials in cement-bas

Knowledge of the controls affecting the release of contaminants from waste rock dumps is critical for developing strategies to mitigate downstream impacts on water quality. In this study, a three-dimensional model of a large coal waste rock dump constructed in the Elk Valley, British Columbia, Canada was developed to capture the impact of construction history (1981-2012) and solute transport on nitrate (NO3-) release over a 100-year timeframe. The model consisted of 21, one-dimensional finite element models that represented the temporal evolution of the dump. Nitrate, derived from undetonated

Angiogenesis is an important determinant of tissue function, from delivery of oxygen and other substrates to removal of waste products, in health and disease (e.g., adaptive or pathological remodelling). The phenotype and functional responses of endothelial cells are conditioned by systemic humoral signals and local environmental factors, including the haemodynamic forces that act upon them. Here we describe some interventions that have been helpful in unraveling the integrative nature of the complex in vivo response, and quantitative assessment of angiogenesis in muscle.

Printed circuit boards (PCBs) are a major fraction of electronic waste, yet their glass-fiber-reinforced epoxy matrices remain effectively unrecyclable. Herein, we employ thiocracking, a one-pot reaction of elemental sulfur with PCBs, to convert them into functional composites. The process is 99% atom-economic and near-zero-waste, exploiting only PCBs and abundant refinery by-product sulfur as reagents. Mechanistic progression from model bisphenol derivatives to FR-4 laminates and shredded PCBs demonstrated that thiocracking cleaves aryl-O and C-C linkages within the polymeric structure and re

The development of carbon-neutral construction materials has stimulated interest in alkali-activated systems for the valorization of industrial non-hazardous waste. This study proposes an original comparative approach to assess the cementing reactivity of several wastes, including black and white fly ash, bottom ash, fine glass dust, and float-glass polishing sludge, through their use as partial replacements for metakaolin (MK). Formulations containing 5-50 wt% of fine waste powders (<45 μm) were prepared and mechanically compared with a reference MK-based geopolymer. Formulations containing w

The upcycling of plastic waste into high-value functional materials offers a sustainable pathway aligned with green chemistry and circular economy principles. In this study, activated carbon (aPAC) was synthesized from waste PET bottles via KOH activation and employed as a support for trivalent metal catalysts (Fe, Bi, and Ce) aimed at low-temperature catalytic oxidation of hydrogen sulfide (H2S). Among the prepared catalysts, Fe/aPAC exhibited the most promising performance, achieving nearly complete H2S conversion (∼95%) and a high sulfur yield (∼90%) under humid air at 30 °C. Textural and s

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) formation from the pyrolysis of waste tires is inevitable because of the complexity of tire formulations and the addition of certain chemicals. In this study, the formation behavior and distribution of PAHs in three-phases were investigated from waste tires under pyrolysis conditions. The influencing factors including the temperature, heating rate, holding time, particle size, catalyzer, and atmosphere, were systematically evaluated. The results showed that PAHs were mainly concentrated in pyrolysis oil (94.59-99.03%), followed by the gas phase (0.96-5.3

Halogenated polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (Cl/Br-PAHs) have received tremendous attention due to their high toxicity. To identify the emission pattern of Cl/Br-PAHs from various industrial productions, understand the formation mechanisms and the influence on the surroundings, this study investigated the surface soils of three typical industrial parks. Generally, traces of Cl-PAHs were much lower than Br-PAHs. The mean Cl-PAH concentrations followed the trend of petrochemical industrial park (3.12 ng/g), brominated flame retardant (BFR) manufacturing park (1.48 ng/g), and electronic waste di
