Low-cost, scalable fabrication of antibacterial asymmetric hydrogels inspired by mangrove systems for superior oil-water separation and salt-tolerant evaporation.

Offshore oil spill incidents not only pollute marine ecosystems but also exacerbate freshwater shortages in coastal regions where seawater is abundant but drinkable water is scarce. Addressing these dual challenges requires materials that can efficiently separate oil from water while simultaneously enabling seawater desalination. Here, inspired by the asymmetric architecture of mangrove systems, we developed a scalable strategy for constructing composite hydrogels with hierarchical pore structures. The fabricated hydrogel integrates oil-water separation and salt-tolerant solar evaporation into

Health risk assessment of exposure to organic matter from the use of reclaimed water in toilets.

To estimate the carcinogenic and non-carcinogenic risks of six volatile organic compounds (VOCs) found in reclaimed water used for flushing toilets, a probabilistic health risk assessment based on Monte Carlo simulations was used. Before Monte Carlo simulations, the contaminant volatilization model was applied to estimate the concentration of the pollutants in air. Moreover, a questionnaire was used to acquire daily exposure time and the Batch Fit tool of Crystal Ball software was applied to find the best-fitting distribution of a part of the input parameters. The risk analysis indicated that

Surface water quality monitoring in Sulaymaniyah Governorate, Iraq: polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, major anions, physicochemical parameters, and seasonal trends.

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are persistent organic pollutants (POPs) that pose a severe threat to aquatic ecosystems worldwide. This study presents a comprehensive assessment of PAH contamination in selected interconnected freshwater systems in the Sulaymaniyah Governorate, Iraq, based on the winter and spring 2025 samples collected from eight shoreline sites. ∑PAH concentrations were notably high across all sampling sites, ranging from 37.61 to 217.30 µg L-1 throughout the sampling campaigns. Raw sewage, massive local agriculture, municipal waste, and various toxic industrial effl

Spatial mapping and risk assessment of microplastic contamination in drinking water catchments from north of the Persian Gulf.

Microplastics (MPs) are emerging contaminants in drinking water that raise global concerns due to their health risks and long-term environmental persistence. These tiny plastic particles can accumulate within human bodies and ecosystems, making it essential to understand their presence and behavior in water sources, especially in drinking water. In Khuzestan Province, which is of strategic importance in the Gulf region. This study assesses the concentration and types of MPs entering and leaving these 11 treatment plants. In untreated water, particle size analysis revealed that 50% of MPs were

Unveiling the mechanism and driving factors of pharmaceutical and personal care product (PPCP) removal in wastewater treatment plants.

Wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) are primary point sources of pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs) entering the environment; however, few studies have systematically elucidated the PPCP removal mechanism in WWTPs. In this study, we conducted two composite sampling campaigns, collecting water and sludge samples from each treatment stage of four secondary or tertiary WWTPs with various processes. Our goal was to identify the mechanisms and driving factors behind the removal of 30 common PPCPs. The average removal efficiency of all PPCPs was 62.57 %, with significant variations (

Hydrologic and water quality performance of a subsurface gravel wetland treating stormwater runoff.

Subsurface gravel wetlands are an emerging type of green infrastructure that can be used to manage stormwater through the capture and slow release of runoff. They are unique to other types of green infrastructure in that they have a distinct fully saturated gravel layer below an occasionally saturated soil layer that influences pollutant removal processes. While they have been widely applied to treat wastewater, our understanding of their efficiency in treating stormwater with variable pollutant inputs is limited. To fill this gap, this study monitored the flow and water quality (total suspend

In situ application of stir bar sorptive extraction as a passive sampling technique for the monitoring of agricultural pesticides in surface waters.

Grab sampling and automated sampling are not suitable or logistically too constraining for the monitoring of pesticides in dynamic streams located in agricultural watersheds. In this work, we applied stir bar sorptive extraction (SBSE) Twisters® directly in two small rivers of a French vineyard (herein referred to as "passive SBSE"), for periods of one or two weeks during a month, for the passive sampling of 19 agricultural pesticides. We performed qualitative and semi-quantitative comparisons of the performances of passive SBSE firstly to automated sampling coupled to analytical SBSE, and sec

Chlorothalonil and 2,4-D losses in surface water discharge from a managed turf watershed.

Managed turf sites (golf courses) are the most intensively managed landscapes in the urban environment. Yet, long-term watershed scale studies documenting the environmental transport of agrichemicals applied to these systems are rare. The objective of this study was to quantify the surface discharge losses of two commonly applied pesticides (chlorothalonil and 2,4-D) resulting from prevailing practices on a managed golf course. Inflow and outflow discharge waters on a subarea of Northland Country Club located in Duluth, MN were measured for both quantity and quality from April through November

Spatial and temporal variation in hexachlorocyclohexane isomers in a temperate estuary.

Hexachlorocylcohexanes (HCHs) are pesticides that persist in air and water of the Northern hemisphere. To understand the spatial and temporal variability in HCH levels in estuarine surface waters we measured concentrations of two HCH isomers (alpha-HCH and gamma-HCH) at six sites in the York River estuary at bimonthly intervals for a year. Bacterial abundance and activity were also monitored using acridine orange direct counts and uptake of tritiated substrates, respectively. Alpha-HCH was consistently observed to be significantly higher in marine water compared to river water entering the est

U.S. EPA SITE demonstration of AWD Technologies' AquaDetox/SVE system.

Under the Superfund Innovative Technology Evaluation (SITE) Program, a technology developed by AWD Technologies, Inc. was demonstrated in September 1990. This paper presents the major results of the SITE demonstration of AWD Technologies' AquaDetox/SVE treatment system designed for simultaneous on-site treatment of contaminated groundwater and soil-gas. The groundwater and soil at the demonstration site were contaminated with trichloroethylene (TCE) and tetrachloroethylene (PCE). The AWD technology was evaluated on the basis of the removal efficiencies of TCE and PCE from the contaminated grou

Nonvolatile mutagens in drinking water: production by chlorination and destruction by sulfite.

In concentrates of water produced in a laboratory simulation of a drinking water treatment process, direct-acting, nonvolatile mutagens were readily detected by means of the Ames Salmonella test. The mutagens were shown to be produced by the chlorination process. Treatment of the water with chloramine resulted in less mutagenic activity than treatment with free chlorine. Dechlorination of drinking water with sulfite sharply reduced the mutagenic activity. Treatment with sulfur dioxide is proposed as an effective, inexpensive method of reducing the direct-acting mutagenic activity of drinking w

Ecological effects of sulfur dioxide, fluorides, and minor air pollutants: recent trends and research needs.

The regulation of the emissions of 'traditional' primary air pollutants (fluorides, sulfur dioxide) has changed the pattern of exposure of ecological systems, with greatly reduced exposure close to sources, but with a smaller effect in some remote areas. Measurements show that recovery is occurring at some sites, in fresh water chemistry (reduced acidity) and in sensitive biota (sustainable fish populations). However, the pattern of change in exposure has not always been simply related to emission reductions. An understanding of responses to recent changes will improve our predictions of the r

Recent advances in the application of magnetic materials for the management of perfluoroalkyl substances in aqueous phases.

Perfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) are a class of artificially synthesised organic compounds extensively used in both industrial and consumer products owing to their unique characteristics. However, their persistence in the environment and potential risk to health have raised serious global concerns. Therefore, developing effective techniques to identify, eliminate, and degrade these pollutants in water are crucial. Owing to their high surface area, magnetic responsiveness, redox sensitivity, and ease of separation, magnetic materials have been considered for the treatment of PFASs from water i

Opportunities to tackle antibiotic resistance development in the aquatic environment through the Water Framework Directive.

Antibiotics are critical components of modern health care. Protecting their efficacy through managing the rise in antibiotic resistance is therefore a global concern. It is not known to what extent environmental pollution from antibiotics contributes to the development of resistance, but encountered concentrations are frequently above concentrations predicted to select for resistance. Hence, measures are needed to manage risks. Here, we analyse if the indirect health risks from antibiotics in the aquatic environment can be considered in the context of the EU Water Framework Directive and the s

Experimental study on radon retardation effect of modular covering floats in radon-containing water.

Radon-containing water bodies in uranium mining areas inevitably release radon gas, polluting the surrounding environment via radiation. Thus, it is particularly important to develop devices with the ability to retard the radon release from such water bodies. Based upon theories of radon exhalation in water, a radon exhalation retardation device (RERD) with flexible, modular floats (a flexible polyvinyl chloride material module that floats on water) was designed and manufactured. To study the modular surface-covering floats' effectiveness in retarding radon release from water surfaces, an expe

Removal of microorganic pollutants in aquatic environment: The utilization of Fe(VI).

Microorganic pollutants (MOPs) in aquatic environment with low levels but high toxicity are harmful to ecosystem and human health. Fe(VI) has a dual-functional role in oxidation and coagulation, and can effectively remove MOPs, heavy metal, phosphate, particulates and colloids. Moreover, Fe(VI) can combine with traditional coagulants, or use as a pretreatment for membrane treatment because of its characters to generate nanoparticles by degradation in water. Based on the relevant toxicity experiments, Fe(VI) had been proved to be safe for the efficient treatment of MOPs. For better utilization

Porous multifunctional phenylcarbamoylated-β-cyclodextrin polymers for rapid removal of aromatic organic pollutants.

In this work, polymers containing a large number of benzene rings and multiple functional groups were designed to remove aromatic organic pollutants. Using tetrafluoroterephthalonitrile (TFTPN) as a rigid crosslinking agent to crosslink different functionalized phenylcarbamoylated-β-cyclodextrin derivatives to prepare a series of porous multifunctional cyclodextrin (CD) polymerizations, including three preliminary polymerized adsorption materials and a mix β-cyclodextrin polymer (X-CDP) prepared via a secondary crosslinking procedure of the above three materials. Industrial Melanism in the Seasnake Emydocephalus annulatus.

Although classically associated with urban environments in invertebrates, melanism in terrestrial snakes is more often linked to occupancy of cool climates [1-3]. Thermal advantages to melanism do not apply in aquatic snakes [4], but although turtle-headed seasnakes (Emydocephalus annulatus) are banded or blotched across a wide geographic range [5], most individuals are melanic in polluted inshore bays of the Pacific island of New Caledonia [4]. Why has melanism evolved in these urban sites? Because trace elements bind to melanin, darker feathers enhance a bird's ability to shed pollutants [6]

Influence of chemical speciation and biofilm composition on mercury accumulation by freshwater biofilms.

Mercury (Hg) is a pollutant of high concern for aquatic systems due to the biomagnification of its methylated form along the food chain. However, in contrast to other metals, gaining knowledge of its bioavailable forms for aquatic microorganisms remains challenging, making Hg risk assessment difficult. Ubiquitous and sessile freshwater biofilms are well known to accumulate and to transform Hg present in their ambient environment. The present study thus aims to evaluate whether non-extractable (proxy of intracellular) Hg accumulated by biofilms could be a good indicator of Hg bioavailability fo
