As President of the United States from 1909 to 1913, William Howard Taft's minimum body mass index was 42 kg/m(2). This article presents evidence that he suffered from obstructive sleep apnea, manifested by excessive daytime somnolence, snoring, systemic hypertension and, perhaps, cognitive and psychosocial impairment. As president, Taft's hypersomnolence was severe and obvious, but never prompted official discussion of his fitness to govern. Within 12 months of leaving office, Taft permanently lost over 60 pounds. Diffuse panbronchiolitis (DPB) is a distinct clinicopathological entity which is characterized by chronic recurrent sinopulmonary infection and inflammation. It is prevalent in the Far East, but extremely rare in western countries. In this report, we described the first Turkish case of DPB and also evaluated demographic and diagnostic characteristics of 18 patients with DPB, previously reported from non-Asian countries. We report a 12-month-old Japanese female with incontinentia pigmenti, in whom magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) disclosed a small transient lesion in the white matter. The Darier-White disease is a rare hyperkeratosic skin-disease which can also affect other organs. From an otoiatric point or view, there are alterations of the oral cavity, salivary glands and congenital deafness, but there is nothing against the nasal mucosa. The clinical case we studied, shows the presence of aspecific nasal hyperreactivity correlated to sun exposure as it happens for cutaneous lesions, independently of the presence of eosinophiles in the nasal secretion. This could mean that the Darler-White disease can also alter the function of the nasal mucosa.

We report 13 cases of white lesions in the vulva in postmenopausal women. Nine cases had clinical and histological features typical of lichen sclerosus et atrophicus (LSA). Two cases exhibited mild histological changes suggestive of LSA. Two cases of normal-appearing histology without significant histological changes. Considering the relatively short duration of the disease and relatively small lesions in the last two cases, they may be considered to represent the initial stage of LSA.

This study examined racial differences in drive for thinness, a motivational variable implicated in the etiology of eating disorders. This study sought to clarify the relationship between cardiovascular reactivity, hostility, depression and ethnicity. Blood pressure and heart rate responses to a standard arithmetic stressor were analyzed in 97 unmedicated hypertensive and normotensive men. Neuroradiologic white-matter lesions (WML) found in CT and NMR were evaluated in 30 demented patients and 12 dementia-free subjects aged over 65 years. NMR revealed more WML signs than CT. All NMR results of demented patients demonstrated abnormalities (brain atrophy and/or WML), while 15.4% patients with dementia had normal CT scan. WML in CT were found more often among male than female demented patients. No dependence between the intensity of dementia symptoms, age of subjects, age of onset of cognitive impairment, risk for vascular diseases, and the presence of WML in CT and NMR was found.
