The effects of long-term low-dose X-ray irradiation on the outer root sheath (ORS) cells of C3H/He mice were investigated. The unscheduled DNA synthesis (UDS) induced by ultraviolet radiations (UVR) in fibroblasts from 5 patients with Bloom Syndrome (BS) has been studied. Alterations of the p53 tumor suppressor gene are the most frequent genetic abnormalities in human malignancies, but the role of p53 in the etiology of malignant melanomas is unclear. Fifty unselected malignant melanomas were analyzed for p53 overexpression by immunohistochemistry using 3 monoclonal antibodies (MAbs). Chromosomes of 52 cases of mouse myeloid leukemia were examined. There were 5 myeloblastic leukemias, 22 granulocytic leukemias, 17 myelomonocytic leukemias, and 8 monocytic leukemias. BACKGROUND: Our previous research showed that a high rate of secondary carcinogenesis is observed during follow-up after transoral surgery in patients with early-stage laryngeal, oropharyngeal, and hypopharyngeal cancers.
