The absorption promoting effect of sodium salicylate (CAS 54-21-7), 200 mg/100-U insulin (CAS 12584-58-6) suppository, was studied in 4 normal volunteers and 15 insulin dependent diabetic patients. Insulin rectal bioavailability was quantitated through the measurement of its hypoglycaemic effect and of its serum levels. Under normal dietary conditions in which the phosphorus (P) intake of ruminant animals is adequate, the absorption of phosphate (Pi) ions takes place from both the fore-stomachs and the small intestine. The rate of Pi absorption from the latter appears to be at least three times greater than that from the former. When absorption of Pi ions from the reticulorumen is severely reduced, as in dietary P deficiency, the absorption of both calcium and magnesium ions from the reticulorumen becomes impaired. Thus, dietary P deficiency may play a role in the aetiology of acute grass tetany.

An 80 year old woman on long term warfarin presented with an acute haemarthrosis of her right knee. Further investigations revealed a large pharyngeal pouch and a history of tablet regurgitation was obtained. Surgical resection was necessary 12 months later to ensure predictable absorption of orally administered drugs. In a double-blind study the effect of a single IV dose (25 mg) of chlorpromazine on gastric emptying, as determined by the rate of paracetamol absorption, was measured in seven healthy volunteers. Each volunteer acted as his/her own control. There was no significant difference between the maximum paracetamol concentration, the time to reach the plasma maximum concentration, and the area under the plasma concentration time curve from 0-120 minutes on the two occasions, indicating unchanged gastric emptying after administration of chlorpromazine.
