An acoustic matching layer can improve energy transmission between the projecting surface of an underwater acoustic projector and hence increase the frequency bandwidth. However, the conventional acoustic matching layer is mostly designed to match the fundamental resonance of the projector. This work investigates the effect of the acoustic matching layer on bandwidth improvement of dual-mode underwater acoustic projectors driven by Pb(Zn1/3Nb2/3)O3-5.5%PbTiO3 (PZN-5.5%PT) ferroelectric single crystals. The results show that when the melamine formaldehyde quarter-wavelength acoustic matching la

Changes in cochlear implant (CI) design and surgical techniques have enabled the preservation of residual acoustic hearing in the implanted ear. While most Nucleus Hybrid L24 CI users retain significant acoustic hearing years after surgery, 6-17 % experience a complete loss of acoustic hearing (Roland et al. Laryngoscope. 126(1):175-81. (2016), Laryngoscope. 128(8):1939-1945 (2018); Scheperle et al. Hear Res. 350:45-57 (2017)). Electrocochleography (ECoG) enables non-invasive monitoring of peripheral auditory function and may provide insight into the pathophysiology of hearing loss. The ECoG r

OBJECTIVES: The Acoustic Roughness Index (ARI) is a multivariate acoustic measure specifically developed to objectively quantify vocal roughness by integrating multiple acoustic features, including subharmonic phenomena that are difficult to capture using conventional acoustic measures. Because the ARI analyzes concatenated voice samples that include connected speech, its performance may be influenced by language-specific phonetic and prosodic characteristics. Although its clinical utility has been demonstrated in Japanese and German populations, it has not been validated in Korean speakers. T

Distinctive prosody has been reported in autism, yet acoustic studies have yielded inconsistent findings, particularly for F0-related measures. Two dynamic measures, spaciousness (magnitude of pitch excursions) and wiggliness (rate of pitch-direction changes), offer alternatives, but spaciousness has not yet been applied to English-speaking autistic children. The present study therefore compared acoustic characteristics of prosody from autistic and language-skill matched nonautistic children (age 3-7) using spaciousness, wiggliness, F0 measures (mean, standard deviation, and range), and speech

Acoustofluidics has emerged as a powerful technique for the precise generation, sorting, manipulation, and stimulation of cell-laden droplets within emerging droplet microfluidic studies. Droplet acoustofluidics leverages various mechanisms, including acoustic radiation forces and acoustic streaming, to actively manipulate droplets non-invasively. The remarkable speed, precision, and biocompatibility of acoustic waves make it an ideal tool for droplet-based single-cell-level biomedical research. This review paper provides a comprehensive overview of recent advancements in droplet acoustofluidi

Biometric verification methods, such as voice, face, iris and fingerprint verification, are commonly used in smartphones, security systems, and medical devices. However, each involves tradeoffs in cost, accuracy, latency and susceptibility to spoofing. We present and report laboratory testing of Oral Cavity Acoustic Verification (OCAV), a biometric verification system that transmits sound waves into the user's oral cavity, characterizes the acoustic response, and returns a verification decision by comparing the acoustic response to the individual's prerecorded acoustic signature. A total of 10

Acoustic resonance therapy (ART), in which individually calibrated acoustic vibratory energy is delivered to the sinonasal cavities, has been shown to be safe and efficacious to reduce symptoms in adults with allergic and/or nonallergic rhinitis. This prospective, nonrandomized, single-center feasibility study evaluated potential use in pediatric patients age 12 to 21 with a nasal congestion sub-score of ≥2 out of 3 on the Total Nasal Symptom Score (TNSS). Nasal congestion sub-score at baseline was compared with an average of the daily score obtained over 2 weeks on treatment. 31 subjects enro

The debate about the rhotic sound in Standard Mandarin (i.e., Putonghua) focuses on its articulation as a retroflex and its classification as either a fricative or an approximant. To address these questions, this study examines the syllable-initial r-sound, quantifying tongue contours for the r-phoneme itself and in relation to the retroflex sibilants (i.e., /ʂ, tʂh, tʂ/). Both established and novel articulatory and acoustic measures are employed to assess their effectiveness in distinguishing phonetic contrasts. The ultrasound imaging results reveal that Putonghua onset /r/ is articulated wit

Extracellular vesicles (EVs) in biofluids are heterogeneous in origin, surface protein expression, and biomolecular cargo. Isolation of specific EV subpopulations may enable studies of biomarkers originating from specific cell phenotypes and disease states. Acoustic trapping is a rapid, automatable EV isolation technique requiring minimal sample preprocessing; however, it lacks the specificity needed for some clinical studies. Combining acoustic trapping with immunoaffinity bead-based isolation could provide access to more specific EV content and broaden the applications of acoustic trapping.

BACKGROUND: Hearing loss in neonates is more than 100 times that of the general pediatric population. Research suggests that there is a large amount of toxic noise exposure for these neonates in the neonatal intensive care unit and in the transport environments. Thus, acoustic neuroprotection, or auditory protection and support of neurodevelopment, is an important concept, particularly for neonates.
PURPOSE: A systematic review of the literature was conducted to determine the possibility of successfully supporting acoustic neuroprotection and decreasing the ambient noise level to the recommen

Acoustic characteristics reflect male quality and play a role in female mate choice. Thus, the frequency of vocalizations and temporal characteristics are often related to body size within and across species. However, it is less clear whether acoustic features can reveal information about individual quality in the domestic chicken (Gallus gallus domesticus) populations. Here, we investigated the relationship between morphological parameters and acoustic features in male and female free-ranged domestic chickens in Liuzhi, Guizhou, southwest China, and further examined whether acoustic character

Efferent brain-stem neurons release acetylcholine to desensitize cochlear hair cells and can protect the inner ear from acoustic trauma. That protection is absent from knockout mice lacking efferent inhibition and is stronger in mice with a gain-of-function point mutation of the hair cell-specific nicotinic acetylcholine receptor. The present work uses viral transduction of gain-of-function receptors to restore acoustic prophylaxis to the knockout mice. Widespread postsynaptic expression of the transgene was visualized in excised tissue with a fluorophore-conjugated peptide toxin that binds se

Acoustic stimulation can improve motor symptoms in Parkinson's disease (PD) and might therefore represent a potential non-invasive treatment option. Scalp electroencephalography studies in healthy subjects indicate that specifically binaural beat stimulation (BBS) in the gamma frequency range is associated with synchronized cortical oscillations at 40 Hertz (Hz). Several studies suggest that oscillations in the gamma-frequency range (>30 Hz) serve a prokinetic function in PD. In this double-blind, randomized study, 25 PD patients were recruited. The study was conducted with (ON) and without do
