Identifying and understanding the biological events that occur following ultraviolet (UV) exposure are mandatory to elucidate the biological and clinical consequences of sun exposure, and to provide efficient and adequate photoprotection strategies. The main UVinduced biological features (markers related to sunburn, cancer, photoaging immunosuppression, pigmentation), characterized in human skin in vivo, could be reproduced in adapted models of reconstructed skin in vitro, attesting their high relevance in the field of photobiology. In turn, 3D skin models were useful to discover precise biolo

Primary gastric malignant non Hodgkin lymphomas occupy a special position, which is documented in the new histologic classification according to the MALT-concept. Our knowledge about the pathogenesis of this entity, its clinical and biologic behaviour and its morphologic and molecular biologic characteristics is increasing. Endosonography might be of outstanding value for the differentiation between the stages EI1, EI2 and EII1. The adequate treatment of these lymphomas is still under debate. Prospective multicenter studies were not performed. Our multicenter study has a stage adapted treatmen

Artificial intelligence is increasingly shaping the evolution of proton therapy, with applications spanning imaging, treatment planning, quality assurance, adaptive workflows, and outcome modeling. Unlike conventional task-specific algorithms, modern AI methods, including machine learning and deep learning, enable integration of heterogeneous data and capture complex relationships across the clinical workflow. These capabilities are particularly relevant in proton therapy, where sensitivity to range uncertainty, anatomic variation, and biological heterogeneity presents persistent clinical and

Tissue resident memory cells (Trm-cells) function as both benign and pathogenic memory cells. Benign Trm-cells play an important role in adaptive immunity by protecting against external pathogens, whereas pathogenic Trm-cells can induce relapses in several chronic skin diseases, including psoriasis. Early and intensive treatment with biologic therapy can lead to effective, long-term disease control by limiting local memory formation in the skin. However, this review finds it important not to compromise the beneficial role of Trm-cells in adaptive immunity when pursuing long-term treatment stra

We adapt a graphics processing unit (GPU) to dynamic quantitative second-harmonic generation imaging. We demonstrate the temporal advantage of the GPU-based approach by computing the number of frames analyzed per second from SHG image videos showing varying fiber orientations. In comparison to our previously reported CPU-based approach, our GPU-based image analysis results in ∼10× improvement in computational time. This work can be adapted to other quantitative, nonlinear imaging techniques and provides a significant step toward obtaining quantitative information from fast in vivo biological p

The study of resilience in maltreated children reveals the possibility of coping processes and resources on multiple levels of analysis as children strive to adapt under conditions of severe stress. In a maltreating context, aspects of self-organization, including self-esteem, self-reliance, emotion regulation, and adaptable yet reserved personalities, appear particularly important for more competent coping. Moreover, individual differences in biological processes ranging from gene by environment interactions to the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis to brain organization related to emotion a

The mechanisms by which thyroid hormone accelerates energy expenditure are poorly understood. In the brown adipose tissue (BAT), activation of thyroid hormone by type 2 iodothyronine deiodinase (D2) has been known to play a role in adaptive energy expenditure during cold exposure in human newborns and other small mammals. Although BAT is not present in significant amounts in normal adult humans, recent studies have found substantial amounts of D2 in skeletal muscle, a metabolically relevant tissue in humans. This article reviews current biological knowledge about D2 and adaptive T3 production

Despite extensive research, effective causal therapies for sepsis remain elusive, highlighting a persistent translational gap between biological understanding and clinical outcomes. Traditional randomised clinical trials (RCTs) have largely failed, likely due to profound patient heterogeneity, dynamic immune trajectories, and reliance on broad syndromic definitions coupled with mortality-centric endpoints. Such designs risk diluting treatment effects and obscuring biologically meaningful signals. Recent studies, however, suggest that precision medicine approaches may overcome these limitations

Reference genome assemblies are foundational resources across the biological sciences as they begin to expose the fundamental building blocks of each species and the molecular toolkits vital for adaptation and survival. High-quality genomes enable insights into evolution, facilitate ecosystem monitoring and protection and conservation of species, access to new biomaterials and biomedicine, advances in agri- and aquaculture, and support planetary health. The amount of information gathered from a species' genome assembly is directly dependent on its quality. However, different sequencing technol

Advanced spatially resolved transcriptomic (SRT) technologies preserve the spatial context of gene expression within tissues, enabling the study of context-dependent transcriptional regulation. Here, we propose a variational inference-assisted sparse Gaussian-process (VISGP) framework for identifying spatially variable genes (SVGs) and inferring spatially dependent cellular interactions from SRT data. VISGP combines sparse Gaussian-process approximations with variational inference via inducing variables to reduce computational and memory costs while enabling gene-specific adaptation of spatial

Thermo-physical perturbation is expected to weaken protein stability and assembly. Yet, in the biological context, chaperones such as heat shock proteins (HSPs) must counter perturbative effects to preserve proteostasis. Herein, we report that the sHSP14, a small heat shock protein from the extremophile Sulfolobus, inverts this paradigm through thermal reinforcement. Fully atomistic in silico sampling is exploited to reveal that elevated temperatures enhance dimeric stability via enthalpic consolidation that persists even at high salinity. This archaeal chaperone operating with minimal molecul

Whole genome duplication (WGD) provides evolutionary opportunities to increase biological complexity and phenotypic diversity by selective retention of duplicated genes. We identify a small genomic region in salmon that governs complex life history variation and has diversified across four WGDs to fine-tune trait expression. Within this region, three large-effect loci on three chromosomes modulate migration timing across four species - a critical trait optimizing fitness by synchronizing reproduction and environmental conditions. Life history and genome resequencing data support intraspecific

The current landscape of targeted therapies directed against oncogenic driver alterations in non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) is expanding. Patients with EGFR-mutant NSCLC can derive significant benefit from EGFR tyrosine kinase inhibitor (TKI) therapy, including the third-generation EGFR TKI osimertinib. However, invariably, all patients will experience disease progression with this therapy mainly due to the adaptation of cancer cells through primary or secondary molecular mechanisms of resistance. The comprehension and access to tissue and cell-free DNA next-generation sequencing have fuel

Nontuberculous mycobacteria (NTM) can cause severe pulmonary disease in people with cystic fibrosis (pwCF). These infections present unique challenges for diagnosis and treatment, prompting a recent interest in understanding NTM transmission and pathogenesis during chronic infection. Major gaps remain in our knowledge regarding basic pathogenesis, immune evasion strategies, population dynamics, recombination potential, and the evolutionary implications of host and antibiotic pressures of long-term NTM infections in pwCF. Phylogenomic techniques have emerged as an important tool for tracking gl

Using of fresh slides and culture T. vaginalis was found in 1094 persons (3.20%). It has been seen the morphological differentiation of T. vaginalis connected with the age, physiological state of macroorganisms and the clinic picture of trichomoniasis. In vivo, the spheroidal as well as ameboid forms of T. vaginalis were observed. The latter ones, characteristic in acute trichomoniasis, were often seen in pregnant women. On the other hand, nonmobile round-shaped forms of T. vaginalis occurred in vaginal contents of girls, women in child-bed and old (5 years after menopause) women. It seems, th

Five hundred epileptics working at common enterprises of various industries were examined in order to evaluate the character of their work arrangements. It was established that in 76% of the patients, the working arrangements were quite rational whilst in 24% they were not. On the material provided by the latter group, the author outlined the factors that negatively affect the mechanisms of biological compensation and the stability of social and occupational adaptation. The quality of occupational recommendations in 10 administrative areas of the RSFS R was also studied. It was revealed that t

Mobile genetic elements (MGEs), including plasmids, transposons, integrative and conjugative elements, and phage-derived sequences, are central drivers of bacterial evolution in agroecosystems. By enabling horizontal gene transfer, MGEs allow soil- and plant-associated bacteria to rapidly acquire complex functional traits, facilitating adaptation to fluctuating environmental conditions and different agricultural management practices. In agricultural soils, MGEs underpin key microbial functions such as nutrient acquisition and cycling, stress tolerance, rhizosphere competence, and interactions

The opportunistic pathogen Enterococcus faecium colonizes humans and a wide range of animals, endures numerous stresses, resists antibiotic treatment and stubbornly persists in clinical environments. The widespread application of antibiotics in hospitals and agriculture has contributed to the emergence of vancomycin-resistant E. faecium, which causes many hospital-acquired infections. In this Review, we explore recent discoveries about the evolutionary history, the environmental adaptation and the colonization and dissemination mechanisms of E. faecium and vancomycin-resistant E. faecium. Monkeypox, caused by the monkeypox virus (MPXV), was historically confined to West and Central Africa but has now spread globally. Recombination and selection play crucial roles in the evolutionary adaptation of MPXV; however, the evolution of MPXV and its relationship with the recent, ground-breaking monkeypox epidemic remains poorly understood. To gain insights into the evolutionary dynamics of MPXV, comprehensive in silico recombination and selection analyses were conducted based on MPXV whole genome sequence data. Three types of recombination were identified: five ancestor-sharing interspe
