BACKGROUND: Brucella abortus, a facultative intracellular pathogenic bacterium that usually causes diseases under animals and humans, can survive and replicate within phagocytic cells. Within the host cells, B. abortus has to adapt to low cytosolic magnesium ion (Mg2+) environment, which is critical for bacterial survival and replication. To understand the fitness of B. abortus under the low Mg2+ environment, transcriptome analysis was performed by RNA-seq. Results: 262 differentially expressed genes (DEGs, fold-change > 1.5 and p < 0.05) of B. abortus, 123 significantly upregulated genes and

Some dietary supplements are recommended to athletes based on data that supports improved exercise performance. Other dietary supplements are not ergogenic per se, but may improve health, adaptation to exercise, or recovery from injury, and so could help athletes to train and/or compete more effectively. In this review, we describe several dietary supplements that may improve health, exercise adaptation, or recovery. Creatine monohydrate may improve recovery from and adaptation to intense training, recovery from periods of injury with extreme inactivity, cognitive processing, and reduce severi

Clam, a filter-feeding lamellibranch mollusk, is capable to accumulate high levels of trace metals and has therefore become a model for investigation the mechanism of heavy metal toxification. In this study, the effects of cadmium were characterized in the gills of Tegillarca granosa during a 96-hour exposure course using integrated metabolomic and proteomic approaches. Neurotoxicity and disturbances in energy metabolism were implicated according to the metabolic responses after Cd exposure, and eventually affected the osmotic function of gill tissue. Proteomic analysis showed that oxidative s

Studies on the stress resistance of insect-pathogenic fungi are very important to better understand the survival of these organisms in the environment. In this study, we examined the cold activity (8 ± 1°C for 7 days), UV-B tolerance (Quaite-weighted UV-B irradiance at 847.90 mW m(-2) for 1, 2, 3, and 4 h), and wet-heat tolerance (45°C for 1, 2, 3, and 4 h) of two isolates of Tolypocladiumcylindrosporum (ARSEF 3392 and 5558), one isolate of Tolypocladium geodes (ARSEF 3275), and two isolates of Tolypocladium inflatum (ARSEF 4772 and 4877) based on their germination, compared with Metarhizium r

Numerous factors involved in general homeostasis are able to modulate ventilation. Classically, this comprises several kind of molecules, including neurotransmitters and steroids that are necessary for fine tuning ventilation under different conditions such as sleep, exercise, and acclimatization to high altitude. Recently, however, we have found that erythropoietin (Epo), the main regulator of red blood cell production, influences both central (brainstem) and peripheral (carotid bodies) respiratory centers when the organism is exposed to hypoxic conditions. Here, we summarize the effect of Ep

Ventilatory response to eucapnic sustained mild hypoxia was measured in one patient with unilateral and three patients with bilateral carotid body (CB) resection (defined UR and BR, respectively). The profile of ventilatory response in UR patient was initially augmented then gradually declined (biphasic pattern) as generally seen in normal subjects although the absolute magnitude was substantially low. On the other hand, biphasic pattern was disappeared in all three BRs. Lack of hypoxic ventilatory decline (HVD) in the late period of sustained hypoxia was in marked contrast to that reported in

Intense exercise-induced right ventricular remodeling is a potential adaptation of cardiac function and structure. The features of the remodeling may overlap with those of a very early form of arrhythmogenic right ventricular cardiomyopathy (ARVC): at this early stage, it could be difficult to discriminate ARVC, from exercise-induced cardiac adaptation that may develop in normal individuals. The purpose of this paper is to discuss which exercise-induced remodeling may be a pathological or a physiological finding. A complete evaluation may be required to identify the pathological features of AR

The review examines the new approaches in modern systems biology, in terms of their use for a deeper understanding of the physiological adaptation of a healthy human in extreme environments. Human physiology under extreme conditions of life, or environmental physiology, and systems biology are natural partners. The similarities and differences between the object and methods in systems biology, the OMICs (proteomics, transcriptomics, metabolomics) disciplines, and other related sciences have been studied. The latest data on environmental human physiology obtained using systems biology methods a

This is a brief overview of physiological reactions, limitations, and pathophysiological mechanisms associated with human breath-hold diving. Breath-hold duration and ability to withstand compression at depth are the two main challenges that have been overcome to an amazing degree as evidenced by the current world records in breath-hold duration at 10:12 min and depth of 214 m. The quest for even further performance enhancements continues among competitive breath-hold divers, even if absolute physiological limits are being approached as indicated by findings of pulmonary edema and alveolar hem

BACKGROUND: Skin disease is a global public health problem that often has physiological, psychological and social impacts. However, it is not very clear how to adapt to these impacts, especially psychosocial adaptation of patients with skin disease.
METHODS: We searched EMBASE, PubMed, CINAHL and PsycINFO from 2009 to 2018. The following themes were extracted from the included articles: the concepts, related factors, and interventions for psychosocial adaptation of patients with skin disease. Two reviewers independently screened and analyzed.
RESULTS: From 2261 initial records, 69 studies we

Adaptogens are natural substances proposed to enhance non-specific resistance to stress and support physiological homeostasis. This review critically evaluates the phytochemistry, molecular mechanisms, human-health relevance, and translational evidence for seven proposed next-generation adaptogens: Lepidium meyenii, Astragalus membranaceus, Cordyceps militaris, Rhaponticum carthamoides, Gynostemma pentaphyllum, Centella asiatica, and Glycyrrhiza glabra. Evidence from mechanistic studies, clinical trials, systematic reviews, and meta-analyses was critically synthesised with emphasis on chemical

Mitochondria are central regulators of cellular energy metabolism, stress responses, and physiological adaptation, with their functions depending on the coordinated interaction between mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) and nuclear DNA (nDNA). These mito-nuclear interactions are essential for maintaining oxidative phosphorylation (OXPHOS), cellular homeostasis, and overall organismal fitness. Increasing evidence suggests that mito-nuclear compatibility influences a wide range of economically important traits in livestock, including growth, milk production, reproduction, feed efficiency, disease resista

Photosystem I (PSI) of terrestrial plants typically contains an antenna system smaller than that of aquatic algae, presumably an adaptation to terrestrial high-light conditions. Moreover, green plants face multiple other stresses including drought when colonizing terrestrial environments and have evolved effective protective mechanisms. However, how exactly PSI antenna size is reduced and the precise nature of these photoprotective strategies remain to be elucidated. Lichens, composed of a mycobiont and a phycobiont, represent a symbiotic life form that thrives under terrestrial-like stress, w

Parallel adaptation is a hallmark of urban evolution, yet whether plant responses to urbanization are globally consistent or influenced by biogeographic origin remains unclear. We investigated pollinator communities, floral display and reproductive allocation in Trifolium repens along urbanization gradients in 11 European urban areas spanning boreal, continental, and Mediterranean biogeographic regions. We found strong differences, with boreal and continental gradients showing no consistent floral trait shifts, whereas Mediterranean gradients showed parallel reductions in flower and infloresce

AbstractUnderstanding how phenotypic plasticity is generated, whether through shared or divergent molecular mechanisms, is critical for predicting organismal responses to environmental change. Similar phenotypes can arise from different pathways, which may vary in costs, trade-offs, and consequences for performance. This study examined whether physiological plasticity in a woodland salamander (Plethodon metcalfi) was shaped by common or distinct gene expression patterns across populations distributed along an elevational gradient. In a laboratory acclimation experiment, I measured plasticity i

Deep-sea holobionts adapt to extreme environmental fluctuations, but the molecular mechanisms underlying resilience remain poorly understood. We investigated the vesicomyid clam Archivesica marissinica and its sulfur-oxidizing symbionts during sulfide shortage via in situ transplant experiments at the Haima cold seep. Transplanting clams to sulfide-depleted conditions (moderate at HM-3 and severe at HM-2) revealed distinct response patterns of host-symbiont interaction. Symbionts may mitigate sulfide loss by shifting from sulfide oxidation to thiosulfate oxidation, supported by thiosulfate gen

Sea stars use hundreds of tube feet on their oral surface to crawl, climb, and navigate complex environments, despite lacking a central brain. While tube foot morphology and function as muscular hydrostats are well described, the mechanisms that coordinate their collective dynamics remain poorly understood. To investigate these dynamics, we employed an optical imaging method based on frustrated total internal reflection (FTIR) to visualize and quantify tube foot adhesive contacts in real time in the species Asterias rubens across individuals spanning a wide size range. Our results reveal an in

Many commercially exploited fish stocks have declined over the last few decades. It is therefore essential to identify natural populations and understand local adaptation for sustainable management. Salinity is a key environmental factor shaping local adaptation, and adaptive trait divergence often occurs at the egg and larval stages. The strong salinity gradient in the brackish Baltic Sea has driven rapid adaptation in multiple taxa. The Eastern Baltic cod (Gadus morhua) has adapted to low salinity with buoyant and tolerant eggs and larvae, but the stock has declined both in abundance and geo

Tactile spatial perceived distance between two touches is larger on sensitive skin regions. While such distortions are substantial for the perception of distance between two distinct touches, they are significantly reduced when participants estimate the size of a single continuous object touching the skin. Here, we examine whether some of the mechanisms involved in processing the distance between two touches are shared with and influence those underlying the perception of continuous objects, leveraging adaptation aftereffects. In experiment 1, participants adapted to specific distances between
