A dyadic analysis of family adaptation among breast cancer patients and their spouses based on the framework of family stress coping theory.

BACKGROUND: The active coping strategies of family members can help breast cancer patients better handle the crisis, and family adaptation is a manifestation of the family's active coping with the crisis. In the study of breast cancer, a disease that predominantly affects women, we explored the influence of spouses on patients' family adaptation. This aspect has not been explored in previous studies. PURPOSE: In recent years, with the development of family stress coping theory, cancer coping styles have shifted from an individual focus to a whole-family approach. This shift has the potential

A multisensory hub for resilience: LC-vLGN/IGL circuits in stress coping.

Enriched sensory experiences promote stress resilience. However, the underlying neural mechanisms remain elusive. In this issue of Neuron, Huang et al.1 identify a glutamatergic locus coeruleus-ventral lateral geniculate nucleus/intergeniculate leaflet pathway that integrates multisensory salience to promote adaptive stress coping.

"You're the child I never wanted": an interpretative phenomenological analysis about the invisible struggle of families in crisis raising a child with persistent and severe regulatory problems.

BACKGROUND: Infant regulatory problems (RP), such as sleeping disturbances, feeding difficulties and excessive crying, affect a significant number of families and can persist beyond typical developmental stages, leading to distress for both the child and parents. These challenges disrupt the co-regulatory bond between parent and infant, often resulting in mutual dysregulation, parental burnout, and strained family relationships. Sociocultural values in Western societies, combined with conflicting role expectations, can contribute to heightened parental stress. Despite growing recognition of in

Resilience in young people living with HIV in low to middle-income countries: a critical review.

HIV continues to be a significant global health issue, with 39 million people living with HIV in 2022, including 1.3 million new infections. Of those, 27% were young people aged 15-24, highlighting the vulnerability of this demographic. Despite advances in HIV prevention and treatment, particularly with antiretroviral therapy (ART), low to middle-income countries (LMICs) remain disproportionately affected by the epidemic. The identification and promotion of resilience factors is critical to both decreasing infections and enhancing coping mechanisms for those young people living with HIV (YPLHI

Tales from the peloton: Stress and coping in professional women's road cycling.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to use narrative inquiry to explore professional women cyclist's stories of stress and coping from their race experiences. METHOD: Semi-structured interviews with 6 professional cyclists provided powerful accounts of their racing experiences. Pragmatist narrative inquiry emphasises the key characteristics of these experiences, which coupled with a reflexive creative analytic practice led to individualised first-person stories being constructed which were combined into an ethnodrama to tell the stories of a fictional women's bicycle race. RESULTS: Tens

Posttraumatic stress symptoms, posttraumatic growth, and personality factors: A network analysis.

BACKGROUND: After experiencing a traumatic event, two possible outcomes are experiencing positive changes, such as posttraumatic growth (PTG), and/or experiencing distress in the form of posttraumatic stress symptoms (PTSS). These constructs are not mutually exclusive; those who experience PTSS may concurrently or at a later date likewise undergo PTG. Pretrauma factors, such as personality as measured by the Big Five Inventory (BFI), can interact with both PTSS and PTG. METHODS: The present study utilized Network theory to examine the interactions between PTSS, PTG, and personality in 1310 pa

Study protocol for a randomised controlled trial investigating the effects of Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction on stress regulation and associated neurocognitive mechanisms in stressed university students: the MindRest study.

BACKGROUND: Stress-related disorders are a growing public health concern. While stress is a natural and adaptive process, chronic exposure to stressors can lead to dysregulation and take a cumulative toll on physical and mental well-being. One approach to coping with stress and building resilience is through Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR). By understanding the neural mechanisms of MBSR, we can gain insight into how it reduces stress and what drives individual differences in treatment outcomes. This study aims to establish the clinical effects of MBSR on stress regulation in a popula

Interrelations of resilience factors and their incremental impact for mental health: insights from network modeling using a prospective study across seven timepoints.

Resilience can be viewed as trajectory of stable good mental health or the quick recovery of mental health during or after stressor exposure. Resilience factors (RFs) are psychological resources that buffer the potentially negative effects of stress on mental health. A problem of resilience research is the large number of conceptually overlapping RFs complicating their understanding. The current study sheds light on the interrelations of RFs in the face of the COVID-19 pandemic as a use case for major disruptions. The non-preregistered prospective study assessed a sample of 1275 German-speakin
