Longitudinal tracking of alcohol expectancies and their associations with impulsivity in alcohol naïve youth in the adolescent brain cognitive development (ABCD) study.

BACKGROUND: Positive and negative alcohol expectancies (PAEs and NAEs, respectively) and impulsivity are key risk factors for the onset of alcohol use. While both factors independently contribute to alcohol initiation, the developmental aspects of AEs and their nuanced relationship with impulsivity are not adequately understood. Understanding these relationships is imperative for developing targeted interventions to prevent or delay alcohol use onset in youth. METHODS: This study utilized the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development cohort to examine how PAEs and NAEs develop over time and rela

Measurement invariance of the Child Behavior Checklist (CBCL) across race/ethnicity and sex in the Adolescent Brain and Cognitive Development (ABCD) study.

There are numerous studies examining differences in the experience of disorders and symptoms of psychopathology in adolescents across racial or ethnic groups and sex. Though there is substantial research exploring potential factors that may influence these differences, few studies have considered the potential contribution of measurement properties to these differences. Therefore, this study examined whether there are differences across racial or ethnic groups and sex in the measurement of psychopathology, assessed in mother-reported behavior of 9-11 year old youth from the Adolescent Brain Co

Fine Particulate Air Pollution, Early Life Stress, and Their Interactive Effects on Adolescent Structural Brain Development: A Longitudinal Tensor-Based Morphometry Study.

Air pollution is a major environmental threat to public health; we know little, however, about its effects on adolescent brain development. Exposure to air pollution co-occurs, and may interact, with social factors that also affect brain development, such as early life stress (ELS). Here, we show that severity of ELS and fine particulate air pollution (PM2.5) are associated with volumetric changes in distinct brain regions, but also uncover regions in which ELS moderates the effects of PM2.5. We interviewed adolescents about ELS events, used satellite-derived estimates of ambient PM2.5 concent

Os supranaviculare and navicular osteochondral lesion contributing to the development of a navicular stress fracture in an adolescent male athlete: Case report.

Stress fractures of the tarsal navicular bone can be problematic in the athlete. This case details the injury and outcome of an adolescent male athlete who experienced one year of intermittent foot pain without acute trauma. Radiographs and computed tomography demonstrated a triad of a navicular stress fracture, an os supranaviculare, and an osteochondral defect of the navicular bone. The patient underwent successful operative fixation and returned to painless full function with imaging demonstrating healing at six months. Diagnosis of a navicular stress fracture in the setting of both an os s

Modulatory effects of sex steroid hormones on brain-derived neurotrophic factor-tyrosine kinase B expression during adolescent development in C57Bl/6 mice.

Sex steroid hormones and neurotrophic factors are involved in pruning and shaping the adolescent brain and have been implicated in the pathogenesis of neurodevelopmental disorders, including mental illness. We aimed to determine the association between altered levels of sex steroid hormones during adolescent development and neurotrophic signalling in the C57Bl/6 mouse. We first performed a week by week analysis from pre-pubescence to adulthood in male and female C57Bl/6 mice, measuring serum levels of testosterone and oestradiol in conjunction with western blot analysis of neurotrophin express…

Bullying, cyberbullying, and social network addiction among adolescents with typical and non-typical development in Omani schools.

INTRODUCTION: Research on the prevalence of school bullying, cyberbullying, and social network addiction in Arab countries is limited. In Oman, these issues are of significant concern due to the country's unique sociocultural context. METHODS: This cross-sectional study examines the prevalence and associations between bullying, cyberbullying, and social network addiction among Omani adolescents with typical development (TD) and non-typical development (NTD). The study included a convenience sample of 1,458 students (50.2% female; mean age = 14.04 years; SD = 0.20) from grades 9-10 in public s

From school climate to brain development: What the ABCD study reveals about the educational context of adolescence.

Children and adolescents spend much of their time in school, and educational environments are central to neurodevelopment and socioemotional health. However, educational constructs are often underrepresented in developmental cognitive neuroscience research. The Adolescent Brain Cognitive DevelopmentSM (ABCD) Study provides an unprecedented opportunity to examine schooling within a large, diverse, longitudinal cohort with rich neuroimaging and socioenvironmental data. This narrative review synthesizes education-related ABCD publications identified through a comprehensive search of the ABCD publ

Agricultural Commodity Price Volatility and Adolescent Reproductive Health in Developing Economies: Pathways, Controversies, and Policy Priorities.

Agricultural commodity markets remain central to household survival across many developing economies, yet their volatility is rarely framed as an adolescent sexual and reproductive health problem. This mini review uses a structured narrative approach anchored in a screened evidence map of 1065 records, from which 50 papers were retained and 16 studies were prioritized for full synthesis. We define adolescent reproductive health holistically, including sexual agency, contraceptive information and use, pregnancy intention, antenatal and obstetric care, protection from coercion, and maternal and

A cultural approach to gender role development in Chinese American adolescents: Transmission of beliefs from fathers to sons.

The study examined the transmission of Confucian-influenced gender role beliefs from Chinese American fathers to their adolescent sons, through fathers' parenting hostility and the cultural construct of shaming. Participants included fathers, mothers, and adolescents from Wave 2 (adolescent Mage = 17.04 years; 58% female and 42% male; collected in 2006) and Wave 3 (collected in 2010) of a study of 444 Chinese American families from the West Coast of the United States. Fathers' gender role beliefs indirectly predicted increases in male adolescents' beliefs from adolescence to emerging adulthood

Cerebellar gray matter volume changes across development: Posterolateral and vermal transient increases during adolescence.

The cerebellum undergoes substantial maturation with regionally distinct developmental trajectories. This study examined cerebellar gray matter volume (GMV) in healthy children, adolescents, and adults, using voxel-based morphometry, the ACAPULCO algorithm, and the SUIT toolbox for cerebellum-optimized analyses. A total of 104 typically developing children (n = 31, 6-9 years), adolescents (n = 35, 13-17 years), and adults (n = 38, 30-40 years) were included. We hypothesized age-group differences in cerebellar GMV, with adolescents showing the greatest volume, specifically in posterolateral reg

Anticipation strategies of motor control in children and adolescents with cerebellar pathologies and typical development: a dual task paradigm.

BACKGROUND: Besides ataxia, cerebellar pathologies are often associated with neuropsychological deficits, particularly in executive attention. The cerebellum is considered a key hub of the predictive brain network, interacting with prefrontal and parietal areas through the basal ganglia. Anticipating the sensory consequences of motor actions and comparing them with actual feedback supports feedforward control, improving coordination, processing speed, and reducing errors. It also contributes to integrating subcortical-cortical networks during dual-task conditions. We hypothesized that impaired

Cardiac-specific mortality prediction in adolescents and young adults with classical hodgkin lymphoma: a nomogram development and validation.

As survival for classical Hodgkin lymphoma (cHL) improves, cardiac disease is a leading cause of non-relapse mortality, yet the risk of cardiac-specific mortality (CSM) in adolescents and young adults (AYAs) is unclear. This study developed and validated a nomogram to predict CSM for AYAs with cHL using data from the SEER database, with a training cohort of 7,475 patients for model development and a validation cohort of 3,205 patients for internal validation. A Fine-Gray competing risk model was used, with the cumulative incidence of CSM surpassing that of cHL over time. Analysis identified Bl
