OBJECTIVES: While low birth weight (LBW) is a recognized risk factor for adult metabolic syndrome, the unique lipid metabolic phenotype of late preterm low birth weight (LPTB-LBW) neonates-who experience dual exposures to shortened gestation and intrauterine growth restriction-remains uncharacterized. This study specifically examines whether the convergence of prematurity and growth restriction synergistically disrupts lipid metabolic programming.

A set of 723 diagnostic sera from human patients, submitted for the microscopic agglutination test (MAT) for antibodies to a group of 6 leptospiral serovars, was also tested by MAT for antibodies to the recently-discovered Leptospira fainei serovar hurstbridge. A comparative study was carried out in order to assess 3 serological techniques employed at the Provincial Centers of Hygiene and Epidemiology for diagnosing leptospirosis. The study included 49 sera from patients with leptospirosis confirmed by the techniques of passive hemoagglutination (HA), plate macroscopic agglutination with thermoresistant antigen (TR) and indirect immunofluorescence (IIF). An in-house enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) based on crude antigen of Leishmania reported a high sero-prevalence (82.0%) in Leishmania donovani induced cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL) in Sri Lanka. A 26 year old woman with ascites was admitted for further investigations. A diagnosis of hydatid cyst disease was suggested on the basis of a combination of abdominal ultrasonography, computerised tomography and latex agglutination tests. This diagnosis was confirmed following surgical intervention. Hydatid cyst disease is a rare cause of ascites and we review the etiology and clinical features of this condition.

Two boys presented with variable signs and symptoms of infectious disease that challenged diagnosis. One of the two patients had aortic valve vegetations and lower extremity aneurysms, and the other had calvarial osteomyelitis, epidural abscess, pleural effusions, and pulmonary nodules. Only after a battery of bacterial and fungal agglutination tests was the unsuspected diagnosis made in each of brucellosis from Brucella canis.

To identify the true contribution of toxoplasmosis to fetal loss and bad obstetric history, we tested 310 women, 77.4% of whom had had single or multiple fetal loss, for evidence of infection. The study was conducted in Duhok, northern Iraq, from July 2002 till September 2003. The detection of colorectal cancer in an early curable stage has become the focus of considerable interest recently. A two-phase test using both guaiac test and Hemolex latex immuno-agglutination test was applied for fecal occult blood screening of colorectal cancer. Latex agglutination by use of the Pneumoslide test on clinical blood cultures detected 22 Streptococcus pneumoniae strains as the etiological agents in 47 streptococcal septic episodes. The other 25 isolates were identified as viridans streptococci or streptococci of groups A, B, D, or G. Outbreaks of leptospirosis that present with predominant pulmonary signs and symptoms have been occurring in the Andaman Islands since the late 1980s.
