BACKGROUND: Prehemodialysis serum albumin is considered an important indicator of nutritional status in pediatric hemodialysis (HD) patients. Study aim To determine whether serum albumin levels changed significantly from predialysis to postdialysis, and correlated with fluid changes over HD treatment.
METHODS: We prospectively measured pre-HD and post-HD albumin levels in 9 pediatric patients (ages 10 to 20 years; mean age, 16.3 years) on HD over an 8-month period. Changes in weight and albumin over 45 HD treatments were compared.

Non-covalent interactions between polymethine dyes of various types (cationic and anionic thiacarbocyanines as well as anionic oxonols and tetracyanopolymethines) and human serum albumin (HSA) were studied by means of absorption, fluorescence and circular dichroism (CD) spectroscopies. Bronchopleural fistulas are a life-threatening complication of pulmonary resection. A 21-year-old woman developed a large bronchopleural fistula after undergoing a pneumonectomy for carcinoid tumor. Human serum albumin (HSA) is the major protein component of blood plasma and serves as a transporter for thyroxine and other hydrophobic compounds such as fatty acids and bilirubin. Chylous effusion is an infrequent complication of abdominothoracic surgery. When conservative therapy cannot cure the patient, surgical closure of the thoracic duct must be performed. If radiological lymphography is impossible to perform, lymphoscintigraphy with Tc-99m human serum albumin is a good alternative. Here, we present two patients who developed chylothorax after abdominothoracic surgery. Successful surgery was performed after lymphoscintigraphy had demonstrated the disruption of the thoracic duct.

BACKGROUND: By using undenatured purified albumin preparations radiolabeled with iodine, the half-life of serum albumin in well patients who are stable is known to be approximately 17 days. However, when a patient is suffering with an acute illness such as sepsis, trauma, burns or after an extensive operative procedure, the serum albumin level decreases. It is not known whether this fall in serum albumin is due to increased catabolism, decreased synthesis, or a combination of both factors. This study explores the kinetics of albumin catabolism under these circumstances to clarify the issue.
