Ultrasonic effects in a suspension system were examined using the photocatalytic oxidation of 2-propanol to acetone and of ethanol to acetaldehyde in the aqueous suspension of TiO2 powder as a model reaction. The formation rate of acetone was significantly increased under ultrasonic irradiation. The oxidation reaction under ultrasonic irradiation was affected in a different manner from that in silence by reaction conditions such as ultrasonic power, stirring speed, amount of TiO2, concentration of 2-propanol, and pretreatment of the TiO2 powder. Furthermore, it was also observed that the parti

Analyses of optical absorption spectra show that the lower monohydric alcohols (methanol, ethanol, 1- and 2-propanol and 1-butanol) exert two distinct effects upon the oxidation of oxyhemoglobin by menadione. As chain length increases from one to three carbons, the rate of oxidation decreases. In contrast, as chain length increases, hemichrome production is enhanced along with the tendency for the oxidized hemoglobin to precipitate. Inositol hexaphosphate, which shifts the hemoglobin-oxygen dissociation curve far to the right, also increases the rate of oxidation. However, the ability of metha…

This study has established a correlation between the hypnotic potencies of aliphatic alcohols and their abilities to disrupt the structure of neuronal membranes in vitro. The hypnotic potency was determined in mice from the ED50 for loss of righting reflex. The alcohol-induced perturbation of mouse brain synaptosomal plasma membranes was measured by a sensitive electron paramagnetic resonance technique. The membrane disordering potency was determined from the slope of the concentration-dependent decrease in order parameter observed for each alcohol. Significant reductions in the order paramete…

Intoxicating effects of ethanol, isopropanol, tert. butanol and barbital were studied by comparing performances on the tilted plane of ethanol preferring AA (Alko, Alcohol) and ethanol avoiding ANA (Alko, Non-Alcohol) rat strains raised by genetic selection for their voluntary ethanol intake. The motor coordination of AA rats was found to be less affected than that of ANA rats by all three alcohols and barbital. The results indicate a marked genetic difference in neural tolerance to the alcohols and barbital, and suggest that neural tolerance to alcohols plays a role in determining the ethanol…

BACKGROUND: Alcohol use disorder (AUD) represents a significant medical challenge, with available therapeutic approaches having limited efficacy. Emerging data suggest that psychedelic compounds could represent an alternative treatment for AUD. Among this class of molecules, ketamine, a dissociative psychedelic, shows promising properties. It reduces alcohol drinking in rodents and in humans it is used to treat depression, a condition often comorbid with AUD. Unfortunately, the marked dissociative and anesthetic effects of this molecule severely limit its therapeutic application. Ketamine is a

BACKGROUND: Alcohol use disorder is characterized by continued alcohol use despite negative consequences, also known as aversion-resistant drinking. Alcohol related cues can invigorate motivation to seek and consume alcohol. It is currently unknown whether alcohol related cues can invigorate drinking despite negative consequences.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Long-Evans rats were trained in a discriminative stimulus (DS) task with cues predicting the available of alcohol reward. They were then tested in the task for aversion-resistant drinking by measuring consumption of alcohol adulterated with in

Prenatal alcohol exposure (PAE), even at low doses, has been linked to long-term alterations in alcohol-related behaviors, particularly increased alcohol consumption and preference in offspring. This chapter examines how low-dose PAE affects the motivational effects of alcohol, potentially influencing the balance between its rewarding and aversive properties. While high-dose PAE has been extensively studied for its teratogenic effects, the implications of lower, more common exposures remain less understood. Preclinical studies using rodent models suggest that even moderate PAE (1-3 g/kg/day) e

Alcohol-related liver disease (ALD) and metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) are the leading causes of advanced liver disease worldwide. The introduction of the steatotic liver disease (SLD) nomenclature, including MASLD, MetALD, and ALD, has increased the need for accurate assessment of alcohol consumption, as disease classification, prognosis, and management depend partly on alcohol exposure. Although structured interviews and validated questionnaires such as AUDIT and AUDIT-C remain standard tools, self-reported alcohol intake is limited by recall bias, underrepo

Alcohol is the primary cause of approximately 70-80% of liver diseases in Denmark. Stopping alcohol consumption before symptoms appear can prevent many liver diseases. Effective alcohol treatment is also cost-effective and can significantly improve liver function. This review suggests that healthcare professionals should identify and treat alcohol problems early, using both pharmacological and non-pharmacological therapies. Challenges include a lack of patient insight and the need for better-integrated treatment programmes.

BACKGROUND: Chronic alcohol consumption is related to more than 200 disorders. Up until now, limits for low-risk use of alcohol were 24 g/ day for men and 12 g/ day for women. Recent epidemiologic studies have shown that any alcohol may be harmful.
AIM: The aim of this review is to reassess the health risk of alcohol.
RESULTS: There is a linear relationship between the amount of alcohol consumed and mortality risk. No risk-free dose of alcohol exists. However, health risk varies not only with the amount of alcohol consumed but also with target organs, as well as individual genetic and non-ge

The influence of alcohol on risk-taking may be through both pharmacological action and individual expectancies. A recent meta-analysis highlighted the need for evidence about the precise role of alcohol expectations on individuals' gambling behavior while under the influence of alcohol and a need to understand what specific gambling behaviors are influenced. This laboratory study investigated the effects of alcohol consumption and alcohol expectancies on gambling behavior in a sample of young adult men. Thirty-nine participants were randomly assigned to one of three experimental conditions in

In the present experience we have evaluated the link alcohol consumption/alcohol use disorder (AUD) and organ transplantation (OT) in order to provide adequate suggestions. The data used for the preparation of these recommendations are based on a detailed analysis of the scientific literature published before August 31, 2022 (Web of Science, Scopus, Google Scholar). Furthermore, in the process of developing this work, we consulted the guidelines/position papers of the scientific societies. With regard to the liver transplantation, there are position papers/guidelines that clearly define indica

Alcohol addiction is a leading risk factor for personal death and disability. In 2016, alcohol use caused 2.2% of female deaths and 6.8% of male deaths, and disability-adjusted life years (DALYs) were 2.3% in female and 8.9% in male. Individuals with alcohol use disorder are at high risk of anxiety, depression, impaired cognition performance, and illicit drug use and are comorbid with liver disease, such as alcoholic hepatitis and liver cirrhosis, which is a major cause of personal death and disability worldwide. Psychological interventions, such as cognitive behavior therapy and motivational

The presence of mouth alcohol (MA) during alcohol breath test for law enforcement is the most common cause of falsely high breath alcohol concentrations (BrAC). A fast and reliable test for detection of MA roadside at the scene of the act would facilitate the police efforts for proper prosecution. A tentative technique to use orally exhaled water vapour as a reference gas to position the origin of alcohol was validated. BrAC and water vapour concentration (WVC) were simultaneously measured as a known MA component was added to subjects with existing blood alcohol. In the absence of MA, water al

Alcoholic hepatitis is a pro-inflammatory chronic liver disease that is associated with high short-term morbidity and mortality (25%-35% in one month) in the setting of chronic alcohol use. Histopathology is notable for micro- and macrovesicular steatosis, acute inflammation with neutrophil infiltration, hepatocellular necrosis, perivenular and perisinusoidal fibrosis, and Mallory hyaline bodies found in ballooned hepatocytes. Other findings include the characteristic eosinophilic fibrillar material (Mallory's hyaline bodies) found in ballooned hepatocytes. The presence of focal intense lobula

BACKGROUND: Models of addictive behaviors postulate that implicit alcohol-related memory associations and biased interpretation processes contribute to the development and maintenance of alcohol misuse and abuse. The present study examined whether alcohol-dependent patients (AP) show an alcohol-related interpretation bias. Second, the relationship between the interpretation bias and levels of harmful drinking was investigated.
METHODS: The sample included 125 clinically diagnosed AP and 69 clinically diagnosed control patients (CP) who had either a mood or an anxiety disorder. Participants co

Although very many individuals drink alcohol at safe levels, a significant proportion escalates their consumption with addiction as the end result. Alcoholism is a common, moderately heritable, psychiatric disorder that is accompanied by considerable morbidity and mortality. Variation in clinical presentation suggests inter-individual variation in mechanisms of vulnerability including genetic risk factors. The development of addiction is likely to involve numerous functional genetic variants of small effects. The first part of this review will focus on genetic factors underlying inter-individu

Chronic alcohol consumption is one of the main etiological factors for liver disease worldwide, however only a fraction of drinkers develop significant hepatic inflammation (alcoholic steatohepatitis), and even less progress to significant hepatic fibrosis and cirrhosis. The pathophysiological significance of hepatic lipid accumulation in the absence of significant alcohol consumption is also increasingly recognized. Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is regarded as the hepatic manifestation of the metabolic syndrome, and it is the most common cause of liver enzyme elevations in Western
