[Hepatic amebiasis in French Polynesia. A study of 25 cases].

The authors report a retrospective study of 25 cases of hepatic amebiasis which were observed from 1988 to 1990 in Tahiti. The symptoms were typical in 20 patients and incomplete in 5 other patients. The ultrasonic examinations showed one (n = 14) or several abscesses (n = 11). The majority were located at the right lobe of the liver (84%). Except in one case where the abscess had a high echo response (it was a pseudo-tumour), the others showed a low echo response or were liquid. The serology (hemagglutination) was always positive but once, at the first examination or afterwards. Recovery was …

[Experimental intestinal amebiasis: invasion and extension of the amebic lesion].

A morphological analysis of an experimental model of invasive intestinal amebiasis was carried out using the washed-closed cecal loop model in hamsters and guinea-pigs. By light microscopy, few amebic trophozoites adhered to the intestinal epithelium, whereas many associated to the mucus blanket. Some trophozoites attached to the interglandular epithelium, during the first 10 to 15 hours of interaction. Hereafter, the parasites destroyed gradually the epithelium and were associated with normal and lysed inflammatory cells. Some amebas have cell debris and erythrocytes in their cytoplasms. Typi…

Correlation of positive syphilis serology with invasive amebiasis in Japan.

Approximately 20% of 52 Japanese males with invasive amebiasis confirmed by gel diffusion precipitin test (GDP) were positive by both Treponema pallidum hemagglutination test (TPHA) and nontreponemal antigen tests, and an additional 20% were positive by TPHA alone. However, none of 109 GDP-negative Japanese males without invasive amebiasis were positive on these serologic tests for syphilis. At least 2 bisexuals and 4 homosexuals were among those with invasive amebiasis. All of these biased males were positive on both TPHA and nontreponemal antigen tests. Four of the biased males had liver abs…

Immunologic tools in the diagnosis of amebiasis: epidemiology in the United States.

Several immunodiagnostic tests that detect antibody to Entamoeba histolytica are now available. Such tests are useful when demonstration of the etiologic agent is difficult (as in liver abscess), when routine diagnostic tests fail to disclose the organisms (as in severe intestinal disease compromised by failure of the laboratory to identify the organism or by the patient's use of interfering substances), and as epidemiologic tools for determining the prevalence of invasive disease in populations. Knowledge of the prevalence of amebiasis in the United States is incomplete because the disease is…

[Clinical trial of etophamide in the treatment of chronic intestinal amebiasis].

The author present the results obtained in the treatment of 100 patients suffering chronic intestinal amebiasis, employing a new drug--Etophamide, in a dose of 1,0 g per day, for three consecutive days. The tolerance of a new antiamebic drug was excellent in all patients, and the parasitological cure rate obtained was 92%. The author concluded that the new derivate amebicide used in this research is very effective for treatment of intestinal amebiasis infections.

[Amebiasis--retrospective analysis of 453 cases in the Zürich region].

In a retrospective study 453 cases of amebiasis were analyzed with regard to duration, purpose, and location of the patients' stay abroad. Diarrhea and abdominal complaints were the predominating features of the history, but occasionally constipation was the only symptom. The patients usually had chronic intestinal amebiasis which was intermittently slightly dysenteric, rather than non-dysenteric as defined by the WHO. There were two cases each of ameboma and colonic stricture and three liver abscesses, one of which proved fatal after complicating peritonitis. Therapy with a tissue and a lumen…
