Magnesium and calcium concentrations were measured in the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) of 15 neurological controls and 41 psychiatric patients suffering from major depression (n = 16), schizophrenic disorder (n = 15), or adjustment disorder (n = 10). In nonrestrained dogs that had not been given chemicals and that were in the fasted and fed state, gastroesophageal sphincter pressure (GESP) was measured; results were compared with GESP induced in the same dogs by drugs that modified activity at cholinergic, adrenergic, histaminic, and gastrin receptors. Atropine reduced GESP from 38.5 +/- 1.3 (mean +/- SE) and 55.5 +/- 2.0 mm of Hg to 11.3 +/- 2.0 and 14.5 +/- 2.4 mm of Hg in fasted and fed dogs, respectively. Morphological observations were made of the behavior of biogenic amines in the gastric wall of rats with acetic acid-induced ulcer. In the normal rat stomach, abundant adrenergic fibers were seen in the adventitia of arteries and arterioles, with frequently distributed mast cells in their environs, in all gastric wall layers. Tranylcypromine (TCP), a monoamine oxidase inhibitor, caused a fatal hyperpyrexia in rats pretreated with LiCl once a day for 4 days. Pretreatment with LiCl alone did not alter the level of serotonin (5-HT), dopamine (DA) and norepinephrine (NE) in the brain. Oral administration of N-nitrosobis(2-oxopropyl)amine (BOP) in drinking water to Syrian golden hamsters for 90 days resulted in a high incidence of intra- and extrahepatic bile duct neoplasms. In the isolated electrically driven rat atria, theophylline (5 X 10(-4)M) produced a small but significant increase in cyclic AMP content which was prevented by reserpine pretreatment.
