INTRODUCTION: Sexual activity may on occasion be complicated by neurologic syndromes of headache and amnesia. These syndromes may be alarming not only to patients but also to medical practitioners unfamiliar with them, initiating inappropriate investigations or advice.
AIMS: To review the clinical features, differential diagnosis, investigation, pathophysiology, and treatment of primary headache associated with sexual activity and of transient global amnesia precipitated by sexual activity.
METHODS: Selective literature review.
CONCLUSION: Transient headache and amnesia associated with sexu

A connectionist model is presented, the TraceLink model, that implements an autonomous "off-line" consolidation process. The model consists of three subsystems: (1) a trace system (neocortex), (2) a link system (hippocampus and adjacent regions), and (3) a modulatory system (basal forebrain and other areas). The model is able to account for many of the characteristics of anterograde and retrograde amnesia, including Ribot gradients, transient global amnesia, patterns of shrinkage of retrograde amnesia, and correlations between anterograde and retrograde amnesia or the absence thereof (e.g., in

A case is reported of a patient who experienced numerous episodes of transient global amnesia (TGA) during which anterograde amnesia was less prominent than usual, and who developed a permanent selective retrograde amnesia. On formal testing, he performed well on traditional verbal memory tests, but showed marked retrograde amnesia for verbal material, including items on a famous voices recognition test. He was administered a paired-associate learning test where the names of famous personalities for which he was amnesic were associated with incongruous activities (e.g. John Newcombe-singing).

The authors studied 18 cases of transient global amnesia, a syndrome occurring in middle age, characterized by a sudden memory loss of recent events and transient inability to acquire new knowledge, while consciousness and personal identity are preserved. Chemical and laboratory findings indicates that TGA is probably due to transient ischemia in the temporal lobe and hippocampus.

Definitions and criteria of transient global amnesia (TGA) are described and discussed and related to other forms of transient amnesic attacks. By doing so, possible causes and risk factors for TGA are listed, and TGA is compared with other amnesic states, and differentiating factors are given.

The term transient epileptic amnesia was coined in 1990 to describe a form of epilepsy causing predominantly amnestic seizures which could be confused with episodes of Transient Global Amnesia. Subsequent descriptions have highlighted its association with 'atypical' forms of memory disturbance including accelerated long-term forgetting, disproportionate autobiographical amnesia and topographical amnesia. However, this highly treatment-responsive condition remains under-recognized and undertreated. We describe the clinical and neuropsychological features in 65 consecutive cases of transient epi

BACKGROUND: Posterior reversible encephalopathy syndrome (PRES) often presents with a wide range of neurological symptoms, and atypical manifestations can complicate its diagnosis. We report a rare case of peripartum PRES presenting with profound transient retrograde amnesia and orofacial automatisms, notably in the absence of generalized seizures.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 29-year-old primigravida developed sustained hypertension during labor. Immediately postpartum, she experienced visual disturbances, followed by altered consciousness and lip-smacking movements. She subsequently developed profo

A student pilot is referred for evaluation of a "head injury with post-traumatic amnesia." The case study presents a temporal association of injury and symptoms that were assumed to be related. A differential diagnosis of an amnestic syndrome is presented. Transient global amnesia is discussed as a possible etiology until an EEG revealed an epileptiform abnormality. The aeromedical implications, military and FAA, of the clinical and electrophysiologic findings are discussed.

We studied two sexagenarians who had recurrent circumscribed attacks of amnesia. Their EEGs showed frequent bilateral spikes that arose independently from the temporal lobes, primarily from mesiobasal structures. Amnesic attacks ceased after treatment with antiepileptic drugs. Neuropsychological tests demonstrated selective cognitive impairments, and short-term memory improved after treatment in one patient. Epileptic amnesic attacks should be distinguished from transient global amnesia, which is clinically similar.

BACKGROUND: Transient epileptic amnesia (TEA) is a rare phenomenon in temporal lobe epilepsy that is often unrecognized or misdiagnosed as transient global amnesia (TGA). It is postulated that TEA is due to both ictal and postictal disturbances. Response to antiseizure medication underlines its epileptic nature. In view of the increasing incidence of new-onset epilepsies in old age, an increase in TEA can be expected in the future.
OBJECTIVE: Analysis of TEA features in a monocentric case series.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: A search in our electronic patient data base yielded 10 patients with TEA

Three major types of amnesia, i.e. selective deficit of memory formation without disturbance of immediate memory have been recognized clinically. The hippocampal type is characterized by relatively short retrograde amnesia and preserved insight into his own amnesic trouble. Persistent amnesia is always associated with bilateral lesion. The diencephalon type usually shows longer retrograde amnesia and poor insight. Unilateral lesion is usually modal in deficit, i.e. verbal in the left and non-verbal in the right, and lacks clear evidence of retrograde amnesia. Responsible locus within the thala

While absence attacks and complex partial seizures have been well documented in patients with epilepsy, the delineation of pure episodes of memory loss without additional clinical manifestations remains poorly characterised. The recently described condition of transient epileptic amnesia (TEA) is critically examined, and four new cases are described, in each of which there were episodes of pure memory loss which subsequently proved to be epileptic in origin. The anatomical and pathophysiological basis of TEA is presumed to be similar to transient global amnesia (TGA), that is, it is likely to

Transient epileptic amnesia (TEA) is characterised by recurrent brief episodes of amnesia and atypical amnesic symptoms, known as long-term anterograde amnesia and dense retrograde amnesia. It has been proposed that an antiepileptic drug (AED) can prevent not only epileptiform activity, but also accelerated forgetting. However, there have been no reports regarding the effects of such drugs on retrograde amnesia. We found that an AED prevented accelerated forgetting, but not dense retrograde amnesia, suggesting that accelerated forgetting in TEA was treatable, but retrograde amnesia was an irre

Transient global amnesia, both persistent and transient, is a very common neuropsychiatric syndrome. Among animal models for amnesia and testing new drugs, the scopolamine test is the most widely used for transient global amnesia (TGA). This study examined the scopolamine-induced deficits in working memory, discriminative memory, anxiety, and motor activity in the presence of intranasal PEA-OXA, a dual antagonist of presynaptic α2 and H3 receptors. Male C57BL/6 mice were treated with intraperitoneal scopolamine (1 mg/kg) with or without pre-treatment (15 min) or post-treatment (15 min) with in

Transitory global amnesia (TGA) is an upheaval where the patient has anterograde memory lost of abrupt beginning and an inferior duration to 24 h, that has been related to ischaemic, epileptogenic and migranous ethiology. On the other hand polycythaemia is classified like a prothrombotic disorder that can produce manifold manifestations in the central nervous system, from strokes to psychiatric disturbances of anxious type, and all related to the secondary cerebral hipoperfusión due to hyperviscosity. Two patients, who had a previous diagnostic of polycythaemia suffered an episode of TGA, in a

Dissociation involves a variety of clinical concepts, and some disorders are also similar to but not the same as dissociation. Dissociative disorder is considered to be a pathological phenomenon based on a psychological mechanism. Accurate diagnosis is very important to ensure that patients receive adequate treatment, although such consideration is not unique to dissociative disorder. Accordingly, there is a need to carefully distinguish dissociation from other disorders. In this article, we outline a number of dissociative and dissociative-like states from the symptoms of amnesia, depersonali

The charts and radiographs of 12 of 1,520 patients who developed amnesia after transfemoral cerebral angiography performed with local anesthesia and minimal sedation were retrospectively reviewed. In three younger patients, exacerbation of organic or idiopathic temporal lobe epilepsy was thought to be the cause of the amnesia, while the amnesia of the nine patients over 40 years old had the characteristics of transient global amnesia. Eight of the patients had had similar episodes before angiography, and three others had other evidence of vertebrobasilar disease. Emboli from atheromatous debri
