Endoscopic perforation of the hypopharynx: anatomy of a disaster.

An initially unrecognized endoscopic perforation of the hypopharynx provided a rare photograhic record of endoscopic appearances from within the mediastinum. The problem of endoscopic perforations is briefly reviewed and analyzed.

Polydactyly of the thumb: abnormal anatomy and treatment.

In nine years 26 duplicated thumbs were seen in the hand clinic of a hospital for crippled children. Using a classification based on the level and degree of duplication and a knowledge of the abnormal anatomy, reconstruction was done. This surgery was done with proper skin incisions, reconstructions of the collateral ligaments, centralization of the flexor and extensor tendons, and alignment of the bones and joints by corrective osteotomies. Simple ablation or incomplete correction produced complications such as skin contractures, increased angular deformities, unstable joints, and intrinsic w…

The pathologic anatomy of alpha chain disease.

alpha CD is an immunoproliferative disorder which is most frequently, but not always, associated with the disease entity referred to as Mediterranean lymphoma with malabsorption. In most cases, the evolution of the disease and its morbid anatomy suggests an immune deficiency state in which an abnormal clone of intestinal plasma cells incapable of producing the complete IgA molecule proliferates, perhaps in response to microbial antigenic stimulation. In the majority of cases, this proliferation is composed of mature appearing plasma cells which lack morphologic features of malignancy. Although…

The anatomy and pathology of congenital dislocation of the hip.

At least 1 per cent of all newborn infants in the United Kingdom have CDH (Fig 10). Among these infants, approximately 85 per cent are normally formed and 15 per cent malformed. Among the normally formed infants, 90 per cent of the CDH are of the Grade 1 type, and 10 per cent of Grades 2 and 3. Such infants have a perinatal mortality of about 5 per cent. In contrast, among the malformed infants, about 50 per cent are CDH Grade 1, and 50 per cent Grades 2 and 3; their perinatal mortality is around 70 per cent. In other words, a much higher proportion than usual of the severe grades of CDH are f

A comparative study of the intestinal anatomy of deer.

The intestinal anatomy of fallow deer (Dama dama), white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus), reindeer (Rangifer tarandus), and elk (Alces alces) was studied. Special attention was given to the spiral loop of the ascending colon and the proportional length of the small and large intestines. The spiral loop of the ascending colon is wound 3-3 1/2 turns in the fallow deer, 2-3 turns in the white-tailed deer, 5 1/2-7 turns in the reindeer and 3-4 turns in the elk. The distal half of the last centrifugal turn of the spiral loop, regularly has one additional loop in the ventro-caudal quadrant of t…

Aspects of the fine anatomy of aphthous stomatitis.

Samples of human aphthous stomatitis were studied under the electron microscope. The epithelial cells bordering the ulcer present multivesicular bodies, pinocytotic vesicles, primary lysosomes, digestive vacuoles, and autophagic vacuoles. The golgicomplex is noticeably increased; free ribosomes and rough endoplasmic reticulum are abundant. Crystalline structures are close to the nucleus. One or two paranuclear bodies are in most of the nuclei. A frank cell injury is evident, causing a major activity of the digestive cell system; the origin and formation of lysosomes through r.e.r. and the Golg
