BACKGROUND: Heme oxygenase-1 (HO-1) has been implicated in the modulation of several diseases including hypertension (HTN) and renal injury. The tubulointerstitial (TI) injuries are supposed to be the main determinants for the development of salt-sensitive HTN. The response of heart function to angiotensin II (AT II) was studied in 18 patients on regular hemodialysis. The mean age was 33 years and they had been dialyzed for 55 months in the average.
