This paper focuses on the lancet fluke, Dicrocoelium sp., and includes a complete review of the literature as well as numerous new research results. The compilation of all these data led to a global overview of ancient dicrocoeliosis history. The presence of the lancet fluke in Western Europe was attested from 550,000 years BP to the 16th century AD Moreover, the parasite was identified in the New World around the 17th century AD following the colonization of Canada by Europeans. The role of human and animal migrations is discussed.

Experimental observations showed, that the muscle larva stage of the trematodes Paragonimus westermani ichunensis located in a reservoir host can enlarge its body size. A rate of growth in trematode individuals varied both among different host animals and within one host specimens. When rodents are infected with such muscle larvae, the individuals with the size exceeding 1.15 x 0.33 mm invade into the lungs oh host, while smaller individuals secondarily migrate to muscles.

Currently, the Milwaukee protocol presents healing results in human beings affected by the rabies virus. However, there are many points to clarify on the action of drugs and the immune mechanism involved in the evolution of the disease. One of the drugs used is biopterin, which is an important cofactor for nitric oxide, important for preventing vasospasm. Thus, we describe the effect of biopterin on some inflammatory factors in a rabies virus infection developed in an animal model. The immunological mediators studied in animals infected with rabies virus submitted to doses of sapropterin were

Parameters of inflammation during pneumococcal meningitis were determined in rabbits after monocyte elimination by dichloromethylene diphosphonate (Cl(2)MDP)-containing mannosylated liposomes in comparison with untreated controls. Monocyte depletion reduced the migration of white blood cells into the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) (medians: 42 versus 2146/mm3 at 18 h, 323 versus 7413/mm3 at 24 h p.i., p < 0.01). CSF IL-1beta concentrations were lower in depleted animals (379 versus 3282 pg/ml, 24 h p.i., p < 0.01), whereas TNF-alpha concentrations were not different. Monocyte-depleted animals lost

Previous studies (Gupta et al. (1982) Nature 299, 259-261) have shown that nonparasitized erythrocytes of Plasmodium knowlesi-infected monkeys contain the procoagulant phospholipid phosphatidylserine (PS) in the outer-half of their membrane bilayer. A reinvestigation of this problem has now revealed that in acute P. knowlesi infection, at least 30% of the infected animals do not have this abnormality. However, PS externalization was a consistent feature in the uninfected red cells of chronically infected animals. Also, a similar membrane change was observed in the red cells of uninfected splen

Visceral larva migrans was produced in 16 cynomolgus macaques (Macaca fascicularis) experimentally inoculated with 45,000 embryonated eggs of Toxocara canis as a single bolus or in 3 divided doses. The hematologic and serologic changes were similar to those observed in children with visceral Toxocara infection. Neurologic signs developed in 3 animals and were characterized by ataxia and nystagmus. Growth rates were diminished in inoculated animals when compared with the rates in noninoculated controls. Diagnostic antibody titers as measured by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay were noted in al

After traumatic brain injury (TBI) elderly patients suffer from higher mortality rate and worse functional outcome compared to young patients. However, experimental TBI research is primarily performed in young animals. Aim of the present study was to clarify whether age affects functional outcome, neuroinflammation and secondary brain damage after brain trauma in mice. Young (2 months) and old (21 months) male C57Bl6N mice were anesthetized and subjected to a controlled cortical impact injury (CCI) on the right parietal cortex. Animals of both ages were randomly assigned to 15 min, 24 h, and 7

BACKGROUND: Epithelium is the periodontal first line of defense against microbes. Discoidin domain receptor 1 (DDR1) is a collagen receptor expressed in epithelium. Ddr1 knockout (Ddr1-/-) mice develop periodontitis-like defects, including junctional epithelium (JE) downgrowth, bacterial invasion, and alveolar bone loss. The objective of this study was to investigate epithelial responses in the absence of DDR1. We hypothesized that Ddr1-/- mice exhibit increased JE permeability and delayed epithelial wound healing.
METHODS: Epithelium was analyzed in Ddr1-/- and wild-type (Ddr1+/+) mice. JE p

AIMS: There are few studies on the treatment of heart failure by injecting stem cells into the pericardial cavity. Can the cells injected into the pericardial cavity migrate through the epicardium to the myocardial tissue? Whether there is therapeutic effect and the mechanism of therapeutic effect are still unclear. This study investigated the therapeutic efficacy and evidence of cell migration of adipose-derived stem cells (ADSCs) injected into the pericardial cavity in rat heart failure. The aim of this study is to demonstrate the effectiveness and mechanism of treating heart failure by inje

Fasciola hepatica is a parasitic helminth that predominantly infects the liver and bile ducts of cattle and causes great losses of cattle production in the southern and southeastern regions of Brazil. The generation of liver lesions and the consequent inflammatory responses are intimately related to the migration of this parasite. The CC-group of chemokines plays a crucial role in the attraction of several cell types and in the recruitment of additional macrophages to an inflammatory focus in numerous diseases. In order to evaluate the role of CCL3 in the development of F. hepatica, we compare

Gut ischemia-reperfusion (G-IR) induces a systemic inflammatory response, in which leukocyte contribution to this injury in distant organs is important. ICAM-1 as well as CD11/CD18 have been involved in leukocyte infiltration in liver and lungs. CD44 adhesion molecule plays an essential role in other inflammatory processes such as rheumatoid arthritis and allergic contact dermatitis, however its implication in G-IR has not been described. In order to establish a possible role of CD44 in the development of systemic inflammation by G-IR, we have studied CD44 mRNA expression by RT-PCR in a murine

Experimental allergic unveitis (EAU) was produced in strain 13 guinea pigs after immunization with purified guinea pig retinal rod outer segments and pigment epithelium (PE) in mycobacterial adjuvant emulsion. The lesions of EAU appear as inflammatory infiltrates of the iris, ciliary body, and choroid, often with photorecptor degeneration. Specific antibodies are frequently detected in the serum of some but not of all animals with clinical uveitis. Immunohistochemical staining of normal and inflamed eyes with serum from the immunized animals with clinical disease demonstrated specific antigens

This study describes the histologic features of periosteum interposed into a physeal fracture of the rat proximal tibia. Periosteum was introduced into a physeal fracture in two groups of animals: those with an intact physis after fracture, and those with the medial half of the physis surgically ablated. Specimens of the proximal tibia underwent histologic analysis at 2, 4, 6, 10, and 21 days after fracture to determine the histologic features of interposed periosteum in a physeal fracture. In animals with an intact physis, interposed periosteum underwent one of two fates: it was degraded by g

BACKGROUND: Meniscal injuries that fail to heal instigate catabolic changes in the knee's microenvironment, posing a high risk for developing posttraumatic osteoarthritis (PTOA). Previous research has suggested that human cartilage-derived progenitor cells (hCPCs) can stimulate meniscal repair in a manner that depends on stromal cell-derived factor 1 (SDF-1) pathway activity.
HYPOTHESIS: Overexpressing the SDF-1 receptor CXCR4 in hCPCs will increase cell trafficking and further improve the repair efficacy of meniscal injuries.
STUDY DESIGN: Controlled laboratory study.
METHODS: hCPCs were g

Current FDA-approved drugs for neurodegenerative diseases primarily aim to reduce pathological protein aggregation or alleviate symptoms by enhancing neurotransmitter signaling. However, outcomes remain suboptimal and often fail to modify the course of neurodegenerative diseases. Acute neurologic injury that occurs in stroke and traumatic brain injury (TBI) also suffer from inadequate therapies to prevent neuronal cell death, resulting from both the acute insult and the subsequent reperfusion injury following recanalization of the occlusion in stroke. Approaches to prevent neuronal loss in neu

BACKGROUND: Accidental ingestion of fish bone is a common cause of otolaryngological emergency. Migration of the ingested bone into the thyroid gland, however, occurs very rarely. The associated clinical presentation, symptoms and duration of discomfort are also highly variable between patients and can be diagnostically challenging.
CASE PRESENTATION: Here, we report the case of a 71-year-old female patient presenting with an ingested fish bone that migrated into the right thyroid lobe as a rare cause of suppurative thyroiditis with the clinical features of sepsis. We outline the diagnostic a

A majority of emerging infectious diseases in humans are zoonoses. Understanding factors that influence the emergence and transmission of zoonoses is pivotal for their prevention and control. Toxoplasma gondii is one of the most widespread zoonotic pathogens known today. Whereas only a few genotypes of T. gondii dominate in the Northern Hemisphere, many genotypes coexist in South America. Furthermore, T. gondii strains from South America are more likely to be virulent than those from the Northern Hemisphere. However, it is not clear what factor(s) shaped modern-day genetic diversity and virule

Historically, the whole of Burkina Faso was considered to be endemic for onchocerciasis (except a small area in the far north of the country) with prevalence rates 60-80%, but all endemic areas were included in the World Health Organisation Onchocerciasis Control Programme, which operated a system of vector control by larviciding beginning in 1974. In Burkina Faso larviciding had been phased out by 1989 when it was considered that onchocerciasis had been reduced to levels below the transmission breakpoint (and any residual infections would disappear without further intervention). There was nev

Toxoplasma gondii is a ubiquitous parasite and a prevalent food-borne parasitic pathogen. Infection of the host occurs principally through oral consumption of contaminated food and water with the gastrointestinal tract being the primary route for entry into the host. To promote infection, T. gondii has evolved highly specialized strategies for rapid traversal of the single cell thick intestinal epithelial barrier. Parasite transmigration via the paracellular pathway between adjacent cells enables parasite dissemination to secondary sites of infection where chronic infection of muscle and brain

The effect of Ketoconazole (KTZ) on the hamster experimental intratesticular paracoccidioidomycosis was studied employing different treatment schedules. KTZ long course treatment beginning at an early stage of the infection was effective in preventing fungal proliferation, dissemination to lymph nodes, spleen and kidneys, and in maintaining low levels of humoral and cellular specific immune responses. KTZ short course treatment starting at an advanced stage of disease resulted in a more severe histopathological picture without significant changes in the immunological profile. The drug prolonge
