To summarize the clinical characteristics of intracranial arachnoid cysts (IACs) in pediatric cases. A retrospective analysis was carried out on clinical characteristics of IACs in 488 pediatric cases who were treated at our hospital from January 2003 to September 2013. There were 342 males and 146 females (male-to-female ratio, 2.34:1), aged 5.61±3.25 years on average. 221 cases (45.29%) were diagnosed accidentally, 267 cases had clinical complaints (54.71%), among which relationships between clinical complaints and IACs were identified in 123 (46.07%). Simple IACs occurred in 364 cases (4.59

Intracavernous sinus arachnoid cysts are rare intracranial congenital lesions. When present, their anatomic location frequently results in cranial nerve palsy. A 15-year-old boy was admitted to our hospital with diplopia, which had gradually worsened over the previous several months. An arachnoid cyst was identified within the right cavernous sinus and fenestration surgery was performed. The patient recovered well and three months after the surgery, diplopia was disappeared. Surgical decompression of the intracavernous sinus arachnoid cyst is beneficial for symptomatic patients with this condi

The existence of a focal brain lesion that might be the crucial cause for the development of diverse psychiatric phenomena and certain characteristics of personality is often a controversial issue. The patient was a 29-year-old male when he killed his father with a single knock with the blunt side of an axe. Subsequently to the act, the patient developed a 10-month-long catatonic stupor during which he experienced intensive fear, delusions, and affective symptoms. He was an emotionally blunted person with no medical record and without prior history of aggressive behavior. Magnetic resonance im

Presence of an arachnoid cyst at craniospinal junction is not very common. This is a very rare anatomic site, with only seven other cases reported in the literature. We report a case of large intradural craniospinal arachnoid cyst presenting with obstructive hydrocephalus and cranial nerve palsy. A 39-year-old male presented with 8-month history of neck pain, headache, vomiting, visual disturbances, diminished taste sensation, and numbness of face. He had bilateral papilledema on ophthalmoscopy. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) revealed a posterior fossa arachnoid cyst extending down to the lo

OBJECTIVE: The optimal management for middle fossa arachnoid cysts (MFAC) remains controversial, but cystocistern fenestration is effective. MFACs are divided into non-communicating arachnoid cysts (NCIAC) and communicating arachnoid cysts (CIAC). This retrospective observational study evaluated the role of phase-contrast cine magnetic resonance imaging (PC-MRI) in the diagnosis and postoperative evaluation of MFACs and assessed surgical outcomes.
METHODS: Twenty-eight children with MFAC that were diagnosed by conventional neuroradiology were enrolled. PC-MRI was performed preoperatively. The

Background. Primary hyperparathyroidism in childhood is a very rare entity, often being diagnosed late after the onset of its presenting symptoms. It most commonly affects patients in their fourth decade of life and beyond. The inclusion of primary hyperparathyroidism in the differential diagnosis is necessary when evaluating patients presenting with nonspecific symptoms such as polyuria, fatigue, weight loss, abdominal pain, nausea, and vomiting. Methods. We report the case of an eleven-year-old girl presenting with three years history of headaches, visual disturbance, along with episodes of

Hydrocephalus is the abnormal accumulation of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) within the confines of the skull that if left untreated results in significant morbidity and mortality. The treatment for hydrocephalus has remained essentially unchanged for over 50 years. It was a technological advance in materials that allowed John Holter, in conjunction with neurosurgeons Spitzer and Nulsen, to devise a valve and shunt system that diverted excess CSF from the ventricular space to the peritoneum. This ventriculo-peritoneal (VP) shunt is far from ideal, with problems associated with under/over shunting,

INTRODUCTION: Neuroendoscopic approaches to Sylvian arachnoid cysts (SACs) constitute an alternative treatment option to craniotomy for fenestration and shunting procedures. In this study, the authors discuss their experience on pure neuroendoscopic technique in the treatment of SACs in children.
RESULTS: The results of treatment of 20 children (range of age, between 7 months and 17 years) with Galassi type II (n, 5) or III (n, 15) SACs who were subjected to pure neuroendoscopic fenestration procedure were presented. It was possible to perform the cystocisternostomy endoscopically in all chil

Arachnoid granulations play a role in CSF drainage. They are primarily located adjacent to cerebral venous sinuses. They may arise on a bony surface causing progressive bony erosion. We report two cases of arachnoid granulations eroding the posterior wall of the temporal bone. The aim of this paper was to illustrate the clinical presentation, and the imaging findings of arachnoid granulation of the posterior wall of the temporal bone. They remain asymptomatic in most cases, but they might cause a communication between the subarachnoid space and mastoid air cells, increasing the risk of bacteri

OBJECT: In this paper, the authors' goal was to evaluate the role of neuroendoscopy in the treatment of arachnoid cysts of the quadrigeminal cistern.
METHODS: Between March 1995 and February 2008, 14 patients affected by arachnoid cysts of the quadrigeminal cistern were treated endoscopically. The cysts were classified according to their anatomical and radiological appearance. The most frequent form (Type I) extended infratentorially and supratentorially with a dumbbell shape. Type II cysts were confined to the infratentorial space and were associated with the most severe and acute form of hy

The syndrome of inappropriate antidiuretic hormone secretion (SIADH) is occasionally seen after hypothalamic injury or dysfunction, although it typically occurs in association with other endocrine disturbances. It is has never been described as a presenting feature of a suprasellar arachnoid cyst (SAC) in the pediatric population. The authors describe the case of an enlarging SAC resulting in SIADH as the only presenting feature, with an otherwise normal hypothalamic-pituitary axis. An SAC was diagnosed in utero in this 5-month-old girl who had a normal functioning hypothalamic-pituitary axis

OBJECTIVES: We report a case of an association of an arachnoid cyst with heterotopic neuroglial tissue in the internal auditory canal.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: A 66-year-old woman consulted for cochleovestibular syndrome.
RESULTS: MRI demonstrated a lesion with spontaneous hypersignal on T1- and T2-weighted images, instigating surgical exploration. We discovered a hematic arachnoid cyst associated with heterotopic neuroglial tissue arising in the internal auditory canal.
CONCLUSION: An arachnoid cyst arising within the cerebellopontine angle or the internal auditory canal is a rare occurrence.

Arachnoid cysts are rare lesions of the spine and can present with myelopathy, radiculopathy, local pain or a combination of these symptoms. Nerve root prolapse into an arachnoid cyst causing radiculopathy has not been reported before. We report a nerve root prolapse into a spinal arachnoid cyst presenting clinically as radiculopathy. An 18-year-old female patient presented with mid-back pain, right anterior thigh pain and hip flexor weakness. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and computerized tomography (CT) myelography revealed an arachnoid cyst at T12-L1 level on the right side. At surgery,

Iatrogenic spinal arachnoid cysts are rare, but have been described as a complication of spinal injection and lumbar puncture procedures. The authors describe 2 cases of iatrogenic spinal arachnoid cyst formation that occurred after incidental durotomy during lumbar spine surgery. In both cases, postoperative MR imaging revealed compression of the cauda equina by an intradural arachnoid cyst. Intradural exploration and fenestration of the arachnoid cyst was accomplished in each case. This entity should be considered in the differential diagnosis of a patient experiencing symptoms of neurologic

The aim of this study is to define the indications to endoscopy versus other surgical procedures in the management of suprasellar arachnoid cysts from a personal series and an extensive literature review. Five symptomatic patients (two children and three adults) with suprasellar arachnoid cysts were treated by endoscopic fenestration in our neurosurgical unit. The endoscopic procedure consisted of ventricle-cyst-cisternostomy in three cases and ventricle-cystostomy in two. Four patients were cured after the endoscopic procedure alone, whereas another with rhinoliquorrhoea later required a cran

We describe a diagnostic problem in a young adult with a long history of frequently occurring headache episodes. The cause for these episodes was traced to a rare condition, extensive arachnoid cyst of sphenoid sinus. Extensive lesions of the sphenoid sinus are relatively rare and can cause non-specific symptoms. Thus they can represent a major pre-operative diagnosis dilemma even with access to advanced imaging techniques.

Arachnoid cysts represent about 1% of all intracranial space-occupying lesions. Usually they are located in the middle cranial fossa while their localization in the posterior fossa is uncommon and generally remain asymptomatic or those are non-specific. The case of a 51 years old female is reported who was diagnosed by IRM of a 4,5 x 2 cm arachnoid cyst, situated on the left cerebello-pontine angle, with tinnitus, hearing loss and vertigo that mimicked a Meniere's attack. We think thees benign tumors must be included in the differential diagnosis of Meniere's disease because they can be indist

Arachnoid cysts are benign cysts occurring in the intra-arachnoid space and containing cerebrospinal fluid. They constitute approximately 1 per cent of all intracranial masses. They are uncommon in the posterior cranial fossa. Common presenting symptoms include headaches, seizures, focal neurologic signs and vague dizziness. Magnetic resonance imaging is the preferred method of investigation, and the treatment for symptomatic cysts is generally surgical drainage. We report the unusual presentation of a young patient with a posterior fossa arachnoid cyst that manifested in the form of isolated
