Head and neck manifestations of Beckwith-Wiedemann syndrome.

Beckwith-Wiedemann syndrome is a congenital disorder manifested by organomegaly, omphalocele, hypoglycemia, and macroglossia. We have found a significant number of these children to be at risk for upper airway obstruction during infancy or childhood. In this review of 13 children, 2 required tracheotomy during infancy for cor pulmonale caused by macroglossia. Seven of nine children older than 1 year required tonsillectomy and adenoidectomy to relieve upper airway obstruction. Although macroglossia can be a cause of airway obstruction in infants with Beckwith-Wiedemann syndrome, we have found t

Analysis of the Abnormal Characteristics of Alveolar Sounds in Postoperative Palatoplasty Patients and Rehabilitation Methods.

The aim of this study was to analyze and compare the error types of alveolar sounds /s/, /ts'/, and /ts/ (ie, fricative and affricate sounds) in different ethnic groups (Han, Uyghur, Kazakh) after palatoplasty. The goal was to provide a basis for clinical assessment and effective intervention. A total of 68 patients who had undergone palatoplasty in our hospital's maxillofacial surgery department were retrospectively selected; all presented with alveolar sound abnormalities. These patients were divided into 3 age groups: 3.5 to 6 years, 7 to 13 years, and 14 years and above. Among them were 39

Reproducible Speech Research With the Artificial Intelligence-Ready PERCEPT Corpora.

BACKGROUND: Publicly available speech corpora facilitate reproducible research by providing open-access data for participants who have consented/assented to data sharing among different research teams. Such corpora can also support clinical education, including perceptual training and training in the use of speech analysis tools. PURPOSE: In this research note, we introduce the PERCEPT (Perceptual Error Rating for the Clinical Evaluation of Phonetic Targets) corpora, PERCEPT-R (Rhotics) and PERCEPT-GFTA (Goldman-Fristoe Test of Articulation), which together contain over 36 hr of speech audio

The articulatory basis of phonological error patterns in childhood speech sound disorders.

Speech acquisition involves complex coordination of articulatory structures, primarily the jaw, lips, and tongue. Typically developing children acquire speech sounds in a hierarchical sequence governed by progressive neuromotor maturation. However, disruptions in speech motor control can lead to systematic phonological error patterns, commonly attributed to cognitive-linguistic deficits. This study explores the articulatory foundations of phonological error patterns in preschool-aged children diagnosed with moderate-to-severe speech sound disorders. Using data from 48 children who participated

Management of functional communication, swallowing, cough and related disorders: consensus recommendations for speech and language therapy.

Communication problems (eg, dysphonia, dysfluency and language and articulation disorders), swallowing disorders (dysphagia and globus), cough and upper airway symptoms, resulting from functional neurological disorder (FND), are commonly encountered by speech and language professionals. However, there are few descriptions in the literature of the most effective practical management approaches. This consensus document aims to provide recommendations for assessment and intervention that are relevant to both adults and young people. An international panel of speech and language professionals with…

Comparative assessment and monitoring of deterioration of articulatory organs using subjective and objective tools among patients with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis.

BACKGROUND: Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a fatal degenerative disease of a rapid course. In 25% of ALS sufferers, speech disorders occur as prodromal symptoms of the disease. Impaired communication affects physical health and has a negative impact on mental and emotional condition. In this study, we assessed which domains of speech are particularly affected in ALS. Subsequently, we estimated possible correlations between the ALS patients' subjective perception of their speech quality and an objective assessment of the speech organs carried out by an expert. METHODS: The study group

Down syndrome as a cause of abnormalities in the craniofacial region: A systematic literature review.

Down syndrome (DS) is the most often diagnosed chromosomal disorder in newborns. The incidence is 1:792 live births. The article describes the irregularities and characteristics found in trisomy 21, which greatly affect the functioning of the stomatognathic system. The most significant disorders include the following: false macroglossia, muscular hypotonia and gothic palate. These abnormalities affect articulation, breathing, food intake, and swallowing. We analyzed the morphological characteristics of the craniofacial region in children with DS based on the current literature review. The foll

Outcome measurements after oral cancer treatment: speech and speech-related aspects--an overview.

INTRODUCTION: Oral cancer and its surgical treatment impair speech quality by an alteration of the vocal tract. Local size and stage of the tumour as well as surgical and adjuvant treatment modalities have an impact on the functional outcome of patients' speech rehabilitation. It was the aim of this overview to specifiy speech and speech-related aspects as well as to delineate measurement methods of speech outcome in patients with oral cancer by a review of the literature. METHODS: The review is based on a Medline Search on "speech", "cancer", "oral cancer", "malignoma mouth", "intelligibilit

Phonological processing and arithmetic fact retrieval: evidence from developmental dyslexia.

The triple-code model, cognitive neuroimaging and developmental behavioral data suggest a specific association between phonological processing and arithmetic fact retrieval. Accordingly, individuals with deficits in phonological processing, such as individuals with developmental dyslexia, are expected to show difficulties in arithmetic fact retrieval. The present study tested this proposal in 25 adults with developmental dyslexia and 25 matched controls by examining strategy use during single-digit multiplication and subtraction and its associations with phonological processing. Findings revea

Central timing deficits in subtypes of primary speech disorders.

Childhood apraxia of speech (CAS) is a proposed speech disorder subtype that interferes with motor planning and/or programming, affecting prosody in many cases. Pilot data (Peter & Stoel-Gammon, 2005) were consistent with the notion that deficits in timing accuracy in speech and music-related tasks may be associated with CAS. This study replicated and expanded earlier findings. Eleven children with speech disorders and age-and gender-matched controls participated in non-word imitation, clapped rhythm imitation, and paced repetitive tapping tasks. Results suggest a central timing deficit, expre

Consonants in Cri du chat syndrome: a case study.

This article reports on a longitudinal case study of consonant productions in one Norwegian girl with Cri du chat syndrome from age 4;6 to age 9;4. It was shown that she had many articulation errors throughout the period of observation. Furthermore, these errors were shown to fall into three main categories: (1) errors of differentiation and tuning, (2) errors of coordination and sequencing, and (3) missing gestures. Also, omissions of segments were reported to be frequent. In sum, the consonant productions by this girl were found to be both delayed and deviant, as compared to normally develop

Enhancing surgical outcomes: The effects of speech therapy on a school-aged girl with Moebius Syndrome.

PURPOSE: Moebius Syndrome is a rare congenital neurological condition often characterized by multiple cranial nerve involvement. This case study presents an eight-year old girl with Moebius Syndrome (MC) who received 30 sessions of speech therapy. This occurred after presenting to clinic 11 months after left facial reanimation with gracilis thigh muscle transfer surgery. On examination, only flickers of left facial movement were observed. There was no movement on the right side of the face. As a consequence of the minimal movement, MC presented with drooling and unintelligible speech. The purp

Relationship of perceptual evaluation for resonance disorders to nasalance scores in children with cleft palate.

OBJECTIVE: To determine relationship between screening perceptual assessment for resonance disorders and nasalance scores. MATERIAL AND METHOD: Screening perceptual assessment of 115 children with cleft palate with or without lip was performed to determine its relationship to nasalance sores. The perceptual assessment 3-scale (-1: hyponasality; 0: normal; +1: hypernasality) was compared to nasalance scores based on nasometry. To find the weight of Kappa, nasalance scores were converted to a 3-ordinal scale with 3 criteria for cut-off points (-1: nasalance score -1, -1.5 and-2 SD lower than th

Between-word processes in children with speech difficulties: insights from a usage-based approach to phonology.

There are some children with speech and/or language difficulties who are significantly more difficult to understand in connected speech than in single words. The study reported here explores the between-word behaviours of three such children, aged 11;8, 12;2 and 12;10. It focuses on whether these patterns could be accounted for by lenition, as suggested by a usage-based approach to phonology. The children carried out a repetition task, with sentences containing environments that can trigger assimilation and elision. Speech elicited was examined using a combination of perceptual and electropala
