New erythritol derivatives from the fertile form of Roccella montagnei.

Chemical investigation of the methanol extract of the fertile form of Roccella montagnei collected in Vietnam afforded twelve secondary metabolites, including five new montagnetol derivatives, orsellinylmontagnetols A-D and a furanyl derivative together with seven known compounds. Their chemical structures were elucidated by analysis of 1D and 2D NMR and high resolution mass spectroscopic data. The relative stereochemistry of two chiral centers (C-2 and C-3) of orsellinylmontagnetols A and B was elucidated by comparison of their coupling constants and the specific rotation with those reported

Chromoblastomycosis Caused by Cladophialophora bantiana in a Renal Transplant Recipient From Delhi, India.

A 45-year-old accountant residing in Delhi, India, presented to our dermatology clinic with a small asymptomatic plaque on the little finger of his left hand of 3 months' duration. The onset of the lesion was insidious and gradually progressed to 4 cm across at the time of his first visit. The patient had undergone renal transplantation twice (the first procedure 3 months prior and the second 18 months prior). Since then, he had been receiving cyclosporine A (400 mg daily) and prednisolone (40 mg) daily in immunosuppessive doses. The patient denied any kind of cutaneous injury prior to the ons

Genetic diversity and population structure of the New World screwworm fly from the Amazon region of Brazil.

Cochliomyia hominivorax (Coquerel) is a myiasis fly that causes economic losses to livestock farmers in warmer American regions. Previous studies of this pest had found population structure at north and south of the Amazon Basin, which was considered to be a barrier to dispersal. The present study analyzed three mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) markers and eight nuclear microsatellite loci to investigate for the first time the genetic diversity and population structure across the Brazilian Amazon region (Amazonia). Both mtDNA and microsatellite data supported the existence of much diversity and signi

Scedosporium apiospermum keratomycosis in a dog.

A 6-year-old male castrated Norfolk Terrier dog was examined following a 21-day history of an increasingly painful eye. Examination revealed marked blepharospasm and purulent ocular discharge associated with an ulcerative keratitis. There was panstromal corneal opacity with raised gray to white lesions. Corneal cytology demonstrated branching septate fungal hyphae identified by polymerase chain reaction as Scedosporium apiospermum. Treatment with topical 1% voriconazole solution was successful in resolving the keratomycosis.

In vitro predatory activity of the fungi Duddingtonia flagrans, Monacrosporium thaumasium, Monacrosporium sinense and Arthrobotrys robusta on Ancylostoma ceylanicum third-stage larvae.

The potential role of companion animals as reservoirs for zoonotic diseases has been recognised as a significant public health problem worldwide. Ancylostoma ceylanicum is the only ancylostomatidae species known for infecting human beings. This article aimed to compare the predatory capacity of predatory fungi isolates Duddingtonia flagrans (AC001), Monacrosporium thaumasium (NF34), Monacrosporium sinense (SF53) and Arthrobotrys robusta (I31) on A. ceylanicum infectious larvae (L(3)) in a 2% water-agar plate. There was no predatory capacity variation among the fungi tested (P>0.05) over the 7-

Onychomycosis by Scytalidium dimidiatum: report of two cases in Santa Catarina, Brazil.

Onychomycoses constitute pathologies frequently seen in dermatological practice worldwide. Usually, they are caused by two groups of pathogenic fungi: dermatophytes and yeasts of the Candida genus. However, in a small fraction of the cases, the etiologic agents comprise nondermatophyte molds, belonging to several genera and species. The objective of this study was to present two cases of onychomycosis associated to the mold Scytalidium dimidiatum in patients residing in two cities of Santa Catarina State, Brazil. Aspects of fungal pathogenesis, as well as the epidemiological characteristics an

Bipolaris keratomycosis.

A case of mycotic keratitis caused by Bipolaris spicifera is reported. The corneal ulcer developed after 1 week of treatment with corticosteroids and antibiotics. Septate, branched, dematiaceous hyphal elements were detected in the corneal scrapings on two occasions and repeated cultures were positive for this fungus. The infection was resolved with natamycin and itraconazole although the corneal opacity remained and the patient is now waiting for a keratoplasty.

Metal content profiles in mushrooms collected in primary forests of Latin America.

Ecotoxicology and environmental safety concerns suggested estimation of the content of 14 metals-some of them highly toxic, such as cadmium, mercury, and lead-in 26 mushrooms species (Basidiomycetes and Ascomycetes). The fungi-members of different genera-were collected during two periods, 1967-1969 and 1978-1981, in primary forests of Latin America (mainly French Guyana and a few samples from Colombia and Costa Rica), these areas are non- or slightly inhabited, therefore, industrial pollution has to be considered as totally nonexistent. Heavy metals, selectively concentrated in specific living

Ultrastructural aspects of hair digestion in black piedra infection.

The ultrastructural pattern of human hair infection by Piedraia hortae in vivo has been studied. The fungus destroyed the cuticular layers of the hair and was able to penetrate deeply into the cortex. The course of destruction of human hair is described and compared with that produced by other fungi. Two well-defined types of cortex digestion were characterized. The slow rate of keratin degradation at the cortex together with the compacted stromatic organization of the nodules are argued as the main reasons that guarantee the long survival of the fungus, and therefore the chronic course of the

Brain abscesses due to Pseudallescheria boydii associated with primary non-Hodgkin's lymphoma of the central nervous system: a case report and literature review.

A 54-year-old man with primary non-Hodgkin's lymphoma of the thoracic spinal cord developed multiple brain abscesses caused by Pseudallescheria boydii. The patient had received radiotherapy and corticosteroid treatment before developing the brain abscesses. Antemortem diagnostic evaluations were inconclusive, and diagnosis was finally made from postmortem brain specimens by the use of histologic examination and isolation of the fungus in culture. The portal of entry for the organism was unknown, but the abscesses were confined to the brain alone. P. boydii should be considered as a possible ca

Clonal integration drives divergent assembly of rhizosphere bacteria and fungi in Hydrocotyle vulgaris under cadmium heterogeneity.

Clonal plants enhance their fitness in heterogeneous environments through clonal integration, which enables resource sharing among interconn … e microbial composition, with elevated relative abundances of Acidobacteriota, Actinobacteriota and Ascomycota and a reduction in Firmicutes. Beneficial genera Streptomyces and Savoryella were enriched under intact stolon treatments. Bacterial α-richness (Chao1) was significantly higher in the rhizosphere of stolon-intact plants, especially at the basal posi …

A Leucine-Rich Repeat Receptor-Like Protein Associated with a QTL for Septoria Stem Canker in Populus trichocarpa × Populus deltoides Hybrid Poplar.

The fungal plant pathogen Sphaerulina musiva (Ascomycota) causes Septoria stem canker, the most economically damaging disease of Populus plantations in North America, yet the genetic determinants of host resistance remain uncharacterized in hybrid poplar. Using an inoculation experiment with the 52-124 pseudo-backcross family of Populus trichocarpa × Populus deltoides (TD × D) hybrid poplar, a single significant QTL was identified on Chromosome 16 (LOD = 4.93) associated with both stem canker count and disease severity score.
