Pharmacological management for insomnia in children and adolescents with autism and attention deficit and hyperactivity disorder.

INTRODUCTION: Insomnia is common in children and adolescents with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and/or attention deficit and hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), with significant implications for quality of life and prognosis. Although non-pharmacological interventions represent the first-line approach, they are not always effective. Therefore, it is important to determine when a pharmacological treatment can be indicated and which compound to prefer based on evidence of efficacy and safety. AREAS COVERED: The literature evidence related to the pharmacological treatment of insomnia in ASD and/or A

Risk of Periodontitis in Adolescents With Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder: A Cohort Study of 81,055 Participants.

OBJECTIVES: Previous studies have demonstrated poor oral hygiene in children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). However, the association between ADHD and periodontitis is still unclear. METHODS: In all, 16,211 adolescents with ADHD and 162,110 age- and sex-matched controls participated in the study between 2001 and 2011. To identify the occurrence of periodontitis, the participants were followed up till the end of 2011. Confounding factors, including smoking, diabetes, and depressive disorder, were assessed and adjusted in the Cox regression models. RESULTS: Adolescents wi

Attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder symptoms and brain morphology: Addressing potential selection bias with inverse probability weighting.

The goal of this study was to examine what happens to established associations between attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) symptoms and cortical surface and thickness regions once we apply inverse probability of censoring weighting (IPCW) to address potential selection bias. Moreover, we illustrate how different factors that predict participation contribute to potential selection bias. Participants were 9- to 11-year-old children from the Generation R study (N = 2707). Cortical area and thickness were measured with magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and ADHD symptoms with the Child B

Predicting verbal and performance intelligence quotients from multimodal data in individuals with attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder.

Despite the importance of understanding how intelligence is ingrained in the function and structure of the brain in some neurological disorders, the alterations of intelligence-associated neurological factors in atypical neurodevelopmental disorders, such as attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), are limited. Therefore, we aimed to explore the relationship between the brain functional and morphological characteristics and the intellectual performance of 139 patients with ADHD. Resting-state functional and T1-weighted structural magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) data and intellectual-p

Gray matter correlates of attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder in boys versus girls with sensory processing dysfunction.

Neuroimaging shows volumetric alterations of gray matter in attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD); however, results are conflicting. This may be due to heterogeneous phenotypic sampling and limited sensitivity of volumetric analysis. Creating more homogenous cohorts and investigating gray matter microstructure may yield meaningful biomarkers for scientific and clinical applications. Children with sensory processing dysfunction (SPD) have differences in white matter microstructure, but not gray matter volumetric differences. Approximately 40% of SPD children meet research criteria for

Evaluation of Efficacy of Cannabis Use in Patients With Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder: A Systematic Review.

Cannabis is frequently used by people who self-medicate for the signs of mental health conditions. Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), a neurodevelopmental illness, has been linked to increased cannabis use. However, compared to other mental disorders, cannabis use by people with ADHD has received much less research. The main goal of this systematic review was to understand the nature of the relationships between cannabis use and ADHD symptoms. We used Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines to conduct the systematic review. We includ

Longitudinal Examination of Sexual Risk Behavior in College Students With and Without Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder.

The present study sought to identify differences in the rates and predictors of risky sexual behavior among college students with and without attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Current ADHD diagnosis, medication status among those with ADHD, executive functioning, substance use, comorbid anxiety, comorbid depression, and gender were identified as potential predictors of increased risky sexual behavior. Multiple group latent growth curve modeling was used to estimate trajectories of risky sexual behavior across four years of college among college students with ADHD (nmedicated = 9

Depression and anxiety disorders during the postpartum period in women diagnosed with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder.

BACKGROUND: Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is associated with an increased risk of poor mental health. However, the understanding of ADHD-related burden and impairments in women during the postpartum period is limited. The aim with the present study was to examine the risk of depression and anxiety disorders during the postpartum period among women with and without an ADHD diagnosis. METHODS: We used register-based data to identify women who gave birth to their first and/or second child between 2005 and 2013 in Sweden (n = 773,047), of which 0.5 % (n = 3515) had a diagnosis o

Brain iron concentrations in the pathophysiology of children with attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder: a systematic review.

CONTEXT: Attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a neurological disorder associated with iron dysregulation in children. Although previous focus was on examining systemic iron status, brain iron content may be a more reliable biomarker of the disorder. OBJECTIVE: This systematic review examines whether children with ADHD have lower serum as well as brain iron concentrations, compared with healthy control subjects (HCS). DATA SOURCES: A systematic literature search was conducted in Medline via PubMed, the Cochrane Library, Web of Science, Embase. and Ovid for papers published betwe

The preattentive change detection in preschool children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder: a mismatch negativity study.

To investigate the preattentive change detection in preschool children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), we compared the mismatch negativity (MMN) and P3a of event-related potentials (ERPs) between preschool ADHD and normal children using three-stimulus oddball paradigm. Analyzing MMN and P3a components, we found that MMN elicited by deviants and P3a elicited by novelty were significantly reduced in patients than in controls. In addition, the P3a amplitude was positive correlated to IQ and negatively correlated to hyperactivity, antagonistic defiance and conduct problems in

Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder and Global Severity Profiles in Treatment-Seeking Patients with Substance Use Disorders.

INTRODUCTION: Comorbid attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is present in 15-25% of all patients seeking treatment for substance use disorders (SUDs). Some studies suggest that comorbid ADHD increases clinical severity related to SUDs, other psychiatric comorbidities, and social impairment, but could not disentangle their respective influences. OBJECTIVES: To investigate whether comorbid adult ADHD in treatment-seeking SUD patients is associated with more severe clinical profiles in these domains assessed altogether. METHODS: Treatment-seeking SUD patients from 8 countries (N = 1,

Sedation After a Trial of Mixed Amphetamine Salts in a Boy with Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder.

BACKGROUND Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a common neurodevelopmental disorder that manifests in early childhood. Pharmacotherapy, including psychostimulants, is considered the cornerstone of ADHD management. Although stimulants have been associated with adverse effects, sedation following the administration of an amphetamine-based stimulant is an extremely rare adverse effect. CASE REPORT We report the case of a 6-year-old boy presenting with ADHD and a history of autism spectrum disorder (ASD). After discussing treatment options with his parents, he was started on a low d

Neonatal jaundice, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder and familial effects: A Swedish register study with sibling analysis.

AIM: Neonatal jaundice is associated with higher risk of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), but it is unclear if the association is influenced by genetic and other familial factors. In this large population-based study, we investigated the association between neonatal jaundice and ADHD while adjusting for familial factors. METHODS: We linked several Swedish registers to identify all singleton births without congenital malformations between 1992 and 2000 (n = 814 420, including 384 290 full siblings) and followed them up until 2009. We calculated hazard ratios (HRs) for the assoc
