Effects of Short Forest Bathing Program on Autonomic Nervous System Activity and Mood States in Middle-Aged and Elderly Individuals.

The present study investigated changes in autonomic nervous system activity and emotions after a short (2 h) forest bathing program in the Xitou Nature Education Area (XNEA), Taiwan. One hundred and twenty-eight (60.0 ± 7.44 years) middle-aged and elderly participants were recruited. Physiological responses, pulse rate, systolic and diastolic blood pressure, heart rate variability (HRV), and psychological indices were measured before and after the program. We observed that pulse rate, systolic and diastolic blood pressure were significantly lower after the program, which indicated physiologica…

Investigating the autonomic nervous system and cognitive functions as potential mediators of an association between cardiovascular disease and driving performance.

Cardiovascular disease (CVD) impacts the autonomic nervous system and cognitive functions related to activities of daily living, including driving an automobile. Although CVD has been linked to unsafe driving, mechanisms underlying this relationship remain elusive. The aim of this study was to examine the role of cognitive functions and the autonomic nervous system as potential mediators of driving performance. Nineteen individuals having recently suffered a cardiac event and 16 individuals with no history of CVD completed a simulated drive using a STISIM simulator to assess driving performanc…

Reproducibility of tilt table testing in patients with vasovagal syncope and its relation to variations in autonomic nervous system activity.

To assess the variability of head-up tilt table testing, 35 patients with vasovagal syncope, shown by a positive tilt table test, underwent a second test 1 week later. Also, on the day before each test, spectral and time-domain indexes of heart rate variability were derived from Holter recordings to examine the stability of autonomous nervous system activity in these patients. Fifteen healthy volunteers served as a control group and also underwent two tilt table tests with prior Holter monitoring. Twenty-one (60%) of the 35 patients had a second positive test. None of the patients in the contr

The neuroimmune pathway of high-altitude adaptation: influence of erythrocytes on attention networks through inflammation and the autonomic nervous system.

INTRODUCTION: Many studies have shown that the functional adaptation of immigrants to high-altitude is closely related to oxygen transport, inflammatory response and autonomic nervous system. However, it remains unclear how human attention changes in response to hypoxia-induced neurophysiological activity during high-altitude exposure. METHODS: In the present study, we analyzed the relationship between hypoxic-induced neurophysiological responses and attention networks in 116 immigrants (3,680 m) using an attention network test to simultaneously record electroencephalogram and electrocardiogr…

Small Fiber Polyneuropathy May Be a Nexus Between Autonomic Nervous System Dysregulation and Pain in Interstitial Cystitis/Bladder Pain Syndrome.

Interstitial cystitis/bladder pain syndrome (IC/BPS) is a highly heterogeneous chronic and debilitating condition which effects millions of women and men in the United States. While primarily defined by urinary symptoms and pain perceived to be emanating from the bladder, IC/BPS patients frequently have co-occurring conditions and symptoms, many of which affect diverse body systems related to autonomic nervous system function. The impact on the autonomic system appears to stem from increased sympathetic innervation of the urinary tract, along with increased systemic sympathetic tone and decrea…

Heart rate variability as a marker of autonomic nervous system activity in young people with eosinophilic and non-eosinophilic asthma.

OBJECTIVE: An imbalance in autonomic nervous system (ANS) activity may play a role in asthma, but it is unclear whether this is associated with specific pathophysiology. This study assessed ANS activity by measuring heart rate variability (HRV) in eosinophilic (EA) and non-eosinophilic asthma (NEA) and people without asthma. METHODS: HRV, combined hypertonic saline challenge/sputum induction, exhaled nitric oxide (FeNO), skin prick tests to measure atopy, and spirometry tests were conducted in teenagers and young adults (14-21 years) with (n = 96) and without (n = 72) generally well-controlle…

Role of the central autonomic nervous system intrinsic functional organisation and psychosocial factors in primary microvascular angina and Takotsubo syndrome.

INTRODUCTION AND OBJECTIVE: Dysfunctional central autonomic nervous system network (CAN) at rest may result in aberrant autonomic responses to psychosocial stressors. We hypothesised that patients with primary microvascular angina (MVA) or Takotsubo syndrome (TTS) would exhibit a peculiar functional organisation of the CAN, potentially associated with psychological patterns. METHODS: Patients underwent a psychosocial evaluation: a clinical diagnostic interview, Millon Clinical Multiaxial Inventory III, State-Trait Anxiety Inventory form Y and Short Form 36 Health Survey (SF-36). The strength …

Interferences of the autonomic nervous system with drug induced QT prolongation: a point to consider in non-clinical safety studies.

INTRODUCTION: QT interval assessment by telemetry has become one of the most useful models in testing strategies adopted for detection of drug induced QT prolongation in non-clinical safety pharmacology studies. This study reports experimental data showing that the autonomic nervous system might influence drug induced QT prolongation. METHODS: Animals were instrumented with telemetric transmitters and epicardial ECG leads. Effects on QT interval of reference drugs such as thioridazine and terfenadine were analysed with different approaches, the Holzgrefe's probabilistic method, the QT shift m…

[The short-term effect of measured normobaric hypoxia on autonomic nervous system function in persons with hypo- and hyperacidic syndromes].

The functional activity of the vegetative nervous system was studied before and after the exposure to graded normobaric hypoxia having been realized as breathing with an artificial hypoxic mixture (AHM) during 10 to 40 minutes in subjects presenting with hypo- and hyperacidic syndromes. A relationship was established between activation of the sympathetic or parasympathetic regions and aggravation of the antecedent history (bad habits). It is suggested that a short-term AHM breathing be used as a test for preservation/failure of mechanisms of adaptation.

The effect of autonomic nervous system activity on gastric myoelectrical activity: does the spectral reserve hypothesis hold for the stomach?

Previous studies have associated changes in gastric myoelectrical activity during motion sickness, as indexed using the electrogastrogram (EGG), with changes in autonomic nervous system (ANS) activity. Subjects who did not report nausea in a rotating optokinetic drum were characterized by normal 3 cycles per minute (cpm) gastric myoelectrical activity, strong parasympathetic nervous system (PNS) activity, and low sympathetic nervous system (SNS) activity. The goals of this study were: (1) to determine whether tasks previously shown to alter ANS activity as indexed by changes in cardiac inter-b…

Role of the autonomic nervous system in the acute blood pressure elevation during repetitive hypoxic and hypercapnic breathing in rats.

Acute intermittent repetitive hypoxia simulating sleep apnoea syndrome is responsible for acute rises in blood pressure (BP). In the rat, the BP rises are enhanced by added hypercapnia. To investigate the role of the autonomic nervous system (ANS) in acute hypertension during repetitive hypoxia alone, FiO2 (inspiratory fractional concentration of oxygen) 2 to 5%, or combined with hypercapnia FiCO2 (inspiratory fractional concentration of carbon dioxide) 2 to 5%, we used autonomic blockade by atropine (1 mg kg-1) + propranolol (1 mg kg-1)-phentolamine (1 mg kg-1). Seven Wistar male rats were ch…

Lack of a direct effect of the autonomic nervous system on glucose-stimulated gastric inhibitory polypeptide (GIP) secretion in man.

To determine whether the autonomic nervous system has a direct effect on GIP secretion, six normal subjects received a 4-hr intraduodenal perfusion of glucose (225 mg/min) and polyethylene glycol on four successive days. During the latter 2 hr, either normal saline, propranolol, phentolamine, or atropine were infused intravenously. Glucose absorption was calculated by measuring glucose and polyethylene glycol following luminal aspiration distal to the perfusion site. Basal and peak or nadir values in the saline study of plasma glucose, insulin, glucagon, and GIP were similar to the other three…

Clinical autonomic nervous system laboratories in Europe: A joint survey of the European Academy of Neurology and the European Federation of Autonomic Societies: A joint survey of the European Academy of Neurology and the European Federation of Autonomic Societies.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Disorders of the autonomic nervous system (ANS) are common conditions, but it is unclear whether access to ANS healthcare provision is homogeneous across European countries. The aim of this study was to identify neurology-driven or interdisciplinary clinical ANS laboratories in Europe, describe their characteristics and explore regional differences. METHODS: We contacted the European national ANS and neurological societies, as well as members of our professional network, to identify clinical ANS laboratories in each country and invite them to answer a web-based survey.…

Young adults' resilience in the context of loneliness: The moderating role of autonomic nervous system activity at rest and in response to challenge.

Both loneliness and autonomic nervous system (ANS) activity have been implicated as factors associated with young adult mental health and well-being. Recent work has begun to study how patterns of ANS functioning both at rest and in response to challenge may together predict mental health. For example, high parasympathetic activity at rest in combination with a decrease in parasympathetic activity in response to challenge predicts lower internalizing symptoms. Rarely have the joint influences of loneliness and patterns of ANS activity on young adult health been examined, and limited work has e…

Analysis of taVNS effects on autonomic and central nervous systems in healthy young adults based on HRV, EEG parameters.

Objective.Transcutaneous auricular vagus nerve stimulation (taVNS), a non-invasive method of stimulating the vagus nerve, simultaneously affects the autonomic nervous system (ANS) and central nervous system (CNS) through efferent and afferent pathways. The purpose of this study is to analyze the effect of taVNS on the ANS and CNS through heart rate variability (HRV) and electroencephalography (EEG) parameters of identified responders.Approach.Two sets of data were collected from each of 10 healthy adult male subjects in their 20 s, and five HRV parameters from the time domain (RMSSD, pNN50, pN…

Cell-autonomous retinoic acid receptor signaling has stage-specific effects on mouse enteric nervous system.

Retinoic acid (RA) signaling is essential for enteric nervous system (ENS) development, since vitamin A deficiency or mutations in RA signaling profoundly reduce bowel colonization by ENS precursors. These RA effects could occur because of RA activity within the ENS lineage or via RA activity in other cell types. To define cell-autonomous roles for retinoid signaling within the ENS lineage at distinct developmental time points, we activated a potent floxed dominant-negative RA receptor α (RarαDN) in the ENS using diverse CRE recombinase-expressing mouse lines. This strategy enabled us to block

Neuron-Glia Crosstalk in the Autonomic Nervous System and Its Possible Role in the Progression of Metabolic Syndrome: A New Hypothesis.

Metabolic syndrome (MS) is characterized by the following physiological alterations: increase in abdominal fat, insulin resistance, high concentration of triglycerides, low levels of HDL, high blood pressure, and a generalized inflammatory state. One of the pathophysiological hallmarks of this syndrome is the presence of neurohumoral activation, which involve autonomic imbalance associated to hyperactivation of the sympathetic nervous system. Indeed, enhanced sympathetic drive has been linked to the development of endothelial dysfunction, hypertension, stroke, myocardial infarct, and obstructi

The effect of intensive diabetes therapy on measures of autonomic nervous system function in the Diabetes Control and Complications Trial (DCCT).

In the Diabetes Control and Complications Trial (DCCT), 1441 insulin-dependent diabetic patients in the primary prevention and secondary intervention cohorts were randomly assigned to either conventional or intensive therapy and followed for up to 9 years. Baseline and biennial measurements of autonomic function (R-R variation, Valsalva ratio, and postural testing) as well as quarterly assessment of autonomic symptoms were performed throughout the trial. There were no differences at baseline between patients randomized to intensive vs conventional therapy. In general, autonomic abnormalities i
