BACKGROUND: Peritumoral normal tissue is inevitably also irradiated during radiotherapy, depending on the location and size of the target volume as well as the cumulative dose. Depending on the temporal course after irradiation acute, subacute, and chronic alterations are described in co-irradiated normal tissue that can be detected by imaging. Radiation damage can be transient or persistent.
OBJECTIVE: This article gives an overview of the most important signs of radiation-induced radiogenic alterations to tissue in various organ systems.
FINDINGS: Frequent radiation-induced tissue alterati

BACKGROUND: Pituitary metastasis of lung cancer is rare; however, it often causes diabetes insipidus. Although the majority of such patients are treated with radiation therapy, it remains unclear whether diabetes insipidus can be controlled by radiation therapy.
CASE: A 72-year-old man was admitted to our hospital for hemosputum, headache, and polyuria. A chest CT scan showed a 3.0 cm mass in the left upper lobe of his lung. Bronchofiberscopy results confirmed the pathological diagnosis of lung adenocarcinoma. Based on the findings from PET-CT, head MRI, and endocrine tests, the diagnosis of

BACKGROUND: Radiation therapy plays an essential part in modern treatment regimes of musculoskeletal tumors. Nevertheless damage to the surrounding tissue does occur inevitably. Postradiogenic changes of bone are associated with decreased stability and an increased fracture rate. The orthopedic surgeon therefore faces a challenging situation with altered bone metabolism, changes in perfusion and soft tissue problems.
PATIENTS/MATERIAL AND METHODS: We present 3 cases of radiation induced fractures during the treatment of soft tissue tumors, all of which received radiation doses of > 58 Gy. All

BACKGROUND: Previously we verified the radioprotective effect of lidocaine on the function and ultrastructure of salivary glands in rabbits. However, the underlying mechanism of lidocaine's radioprotective effect is unknown. We hypothesized that lidocaine, as a membrane stabilization agent, has a protective effect on intracellular neuroreceptor-mediated signaling and hence can help preserve the secretory function of salivary glands during radiotherapy.
METHODS AND MATERIALS: Rabbits were irradiated with or without pretreatment with lidocaine before receiving fractionated radiation to a total

BACKGROUND: Previous epidemiologic studies of workers at nuclear weapons facilities have not included X-ray exposures as part of the occupational radiation exposure. The research objective was to determine the contribution of work-related chest X-ray (WRX) exposure relative to the cumulative occupational radiation exposure.
METHODS: Cases and controls were identified from a cohort of workers whose employment began as early as 1943. Medical records for 297 subjects were used to determine the bone marrow dose from their X-ray examinations. Individual dose data, however, were only available for

BACKGROUND: The pathophysiology of keloid formation remains poorly understood, and treatment typically involves multimodal approaches. Previous studies suggest that keloids on the earlobes, head, and neck may be more responsive to radiation than those on other anatomic sites due to putative differences in skin tension and biomechanical properties. However, limited comparative data exist to substantiate these anatomic distinctions in clinical outcomes.
AIM: To compare recurrence rates, treatment outcomes, and radiation-related side effects between auricular and nonauricular keloids following s

BACKGROUND: It is important to clarify which neoadjuvant therapy yields a better prognosis for patients with resectable or borderline resectable pancreatic cancer: chemotherapy or chemoradiotherapy.
METHOD: We have performed 2 multicenter phase II trials to evaluate the prognostic significance of preoperative therapy: in the first, we examined preoperative chemoradiotherapy, gemcitabine and S-1 with concurrent radiation (n = 63), and in the second we examined preoperative chemotherapy with gemcitabine and S-1 (n = 46). We tried to examine the additive prognostic impact of radiation therapy by

BACKGROUND CONTEXT: Minimally invasive spine surgery has grown significantly over the last decade. Lateral approaches for interbody fusion, such as XLIF/LLIF result in higher radiation exposure for the operating room (OR) staff and the patient compared to posterior techniques. New technologies such as ultra-low radiation imaging (ULRI) combined with image enhancement (IE) software may help reduce this exposure while maintaining procedural efficacy.
PURPOSE: To evaluate whether using ULRI with IE software (mFluoro) reduces radiation exposure for OR staff and patients during lateral interbody f

BACKGROUND: Breast tissue is among the most sensitive tissues to the carcinogenic actions of ionizing radiation and epidemiological studies have linked radiation exposure to breast cancer. Currently, molecular understanding of radiation carcinogenesis in mammary gland is hindered due to the scarcity of in vivo long-term follow up data. We undertook this study to delineate radiation-induced persistent alterations in gene expression in mouse mammary glands 2-month after radiation exposure.
METHODS: Six to eight week old female C57BL/6J mice were exposed to 2 Gy of whole body γ radiation and mam

BACKGROUND: Androgen-independent prostate cancer cells can undergo apoptosis in response to non-androgen ablative means such as ionizing radiation. Recent evidence documented the ability of alpha-adrenoceptor antagonists, a widely used medical therapy for the treatment of benign prostatic hypertrophy (BPH), to induce apoptosis in benign and malignant prostate cells. In this study, we evaluated the potential additive/synergistic apoptotic effect of alpha1-adrenoceptor antagonists with ionizing radiation against human prostate cancer cells in vitro.

BACKGROUND: Occupational radiation exposure remains an inherent risk in cardiac catheterization laboratories. Conventional radiation protection relies on ceiling- and table-mounted shields combined with wearable lead-equivalent personal protective equipment, yet exposure persists and ergonomic burden remains substantial. Enhanced radiation protection devices (ERPD) aim to attenuate scatter radiation at the patient level, but randomized evaluations using comprehensive dosimetry are limited.
METHODS: In this prospective, single-center, cluster-randomized study, shielding strategies were alterna

BACKGROUND: Neural progenitor cell (NPC) migration is essential for proper cortical development, and its disruption contributes to severe brain malformations such as lissencephaly, polymicrogyria, and microcephaly. Although abnormal neuronal migration has been reported in irradiated embryos, the molecular mechanisms by which ionizing radiation affects NPC motility remain poorly understood.
METHODS: Fetal human and mouse NPCs were exposed to low doses of ionizing radiation (0.5-3 Gy). Migratory and invasive properties were assessed both in vitro and in vivo. Reactive oxygen species (ROS) produ

BACKGROUND: The human parotid gland, vital for oral health and digestion, comprises mainly acinar and ductal cells, each with unique responses to environmental stimuli such as radiation. Understanding the differential effects of radiation on these cells is crucial for therapeutic advancements in treating radiation-induced salivary gland damage.
METHODS: Acinar and ductal cells were isolated from human parotid glands and cultured in both 2D and 3D environments. Morphology, proliferation capacity, and transepithelial electrical resistance (TER) were assessed to characterize each cell type. To e

BACKGROUND: Estimation of the radiation dose to the fetus is essential for the assessment of radiation risks and benefits to pregnant patients undergoing radiological examinations. During the past decade, the global twinning rate has soared resulting from embryo assistance and increased delivery age. However, to the best of our knowledge, radiation dosimetry in multiple pregnancies from radiological imaging has never been reported before.
PURPOSE: The purpose of this study is to develop personalized computational models for twin fetuses based on clinical CT images of real pregnant patients an

Exposure to ionizing radiation, accidental or intentional, may lead to delayed effects of acute radiation exposure (DEARE) that manifest as injury to organ systems, including the kidney, heart, and brain. This study examines the role of activated protein C (APC), a known mitigator of radiation-induced early toxicity, in long-term plasma metabolite and lipid panels that may be associated with DEARE in APCHi mice. The APCHi mouse model used in the study was developed in a C57BL/6N background, expressing the D168F/N173K mouse analog of the hyper-activatable human D167F/D172K protein C variant. Th
