Effect of urban street trees on pedestrian safety: A micro-level pedestrian casualty model using multivariate Bayesian spatial approach.

In the past decades, trees were considered roadside hazard. Street trees were removed to provide clear zone and improve roadside safety. Nowadays, street trees are considered to play an important role in urban design. Also, street tree is considered a traffic calming measure. Studies have examined the effects of urban street trees on driver perception, driving behaviour, and general road safety. However, it is rare that the relationship between urban street trees and pedestrian safety is investigated. In this study, a micro-level frequency model is established to evaluate the effects of tree d

Direct and indirect assessment of perfectionism in patients with depression and obsessive-compulsive disorder.

According to the transdiagnostic perspective, psychological disorders share common cognitive processes involved in their pathogenesis. One dysfunctional belief that has been found to be associated with several psychological disorders, including major depressive disorder (MDD) and obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), is perfectionism. Perfectionism comprises two factors, namely, perfectionistic strivings and perfectionistic concerns. This study aims to replicate and extend previous research in several ways. We aimed to assess similarities between the two disorders using Bayesian statistics. Fur

Developmental milestones as early indicators of twice-exceptionality.

Twice-exceptional individuals are those who have high cognitive ability in one or more areas, but also have a diagnosed disability. The needs of these individuals likely differ from those with high cognitive ability without a disability and those who solely have a disability. Intervening early can offer exceptional benefits for twice-exceptional individuals, but this has proved challenging due to the high cognitive abilities masking disabilities. This study explores if parent-reported developmental milestones can predict the number of disabilities diagnosed for an individual, including Autism

From Outbreak to Near Disappearance: How Did Non-pharmaceutical Interventions Against COVID-19 Affect the Transmission of Influenza Virus?

Influenza shares the same putative transmission pathway with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), and causes tremendous morbidity and mortality annually globally. Since the transmission of COVID-19 in China, a series of non-pharmaceutical interventions (NPIs) against to the disease have been implemented to contain its transmission. Based on the surveillance data of influenza, Search Engine Index, and meteorological factors from 2011 to 2021 in Xi'an, and the different level of emergence responses for COVID-19 from 2020 to 2021, Bayesian Structural Time Series model and interrupted time series

TreeKnit: Inferring ancestral reassortment graphs of influenza viruses.

When two influenza viruses co-infect the same cell, they can exchange genome segments in a process known as reassortment. Reassortment is an important source of genetic diversity and is known to have been involved in the emergence of most pandemic influenza strains. However, because of the difficulty in identifying reassortment events from viral sequence data, little is known about their role in the evolution of the seasonal influenza viruses. Here we introduce TreeKnit, a method that infers ancestral reassortment graphs (ARG) from two segment trees. It is based on topological differences betw

Patterns of deer ked (Diptera: Hippoboscidae) and tick (Ixodida: Ixodidae) infestation on white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) in the eastern United States.

BACKGROUND: White-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) host numerous ectoparasitic species in the eastern USA, most notably various species of ticks and two species of deer keds. Several pathogens transmitted by ticks to humans and other animal hosts have also been found in deer keds. Little is known about the acquisition and potential for transmission of these pathogens by deer keds; however, tick-deer ked co-feeding transmission is one possible scenario. On-host localization of ticks and deer keds on white-tailed deer was evaluated across several geographical regions of the eastern US to def

Mycobacterium abscessus drug discovery using machine learning.

The prevalence of infections by nontuberculous mycobacteria is increasing, having surpassed tuberculosis in the United States and much of the developed world. Nontuberculous mycobacteria occur naturally in the environment and are a significant problem for patients with underlying lung diseases such as bronchiectasis, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, and cystic fibrosis. Current treatment regimens are lengthy, complicated, toxic and they are often unsuccessful as seen by disease recurrence. Mycobacterium abscessus is one of the most commonly encountered organisms in nontuberculous mycobac

Attention guidance augmentation of virtual reality exposure therapy for social anxiety disorder: a pilot randomized controlled trial.

Biased attention to social threats has been implicated in social anxiety disorder. Modifying visual attention during exposure therapy offers a direct test of this mechanism. We developed and tested a brief virtual reality exposure therapy (VRET) protocol using 360°-video and eye tracking. Participants (N = 21) were randomized to either standard VRET or VRET + attention guidance training (AGT). Multilevel Bayesian models were used to test (1) whether there was an effect of condition over time and (2) whether post-treatment changes in gaze patterns mediated the effect of condition at follow-up.

Reliability of COVID-19 data: An evaluation and reflection.

IMPORTANCE: The rapid proliferation of COVID-19 has left governments scrambling, and several data aggregators are now assisting in the reporting of county cases and deaths. The different variables affecting reporting (e.g., time delays in reporting) necessitates a well-documented reliability study examining the data methods and discussion of possible causes of differences between aggregators. OBJECTIVE: To statistically evaluate the reliability of COVID-19 data across aggregators using case fatality rate (CFR) estimates and reliability statistics. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: Cases and

Machine learning classifiers do not improve prediction of hospitalization > 2 days after fast-track hip and knee arthroplasty compared with a classical statistical risk model.

Background and purpose: Prediction of postoperative outcomes and length of hospital stay (LOS) of patients is vital for allocation of healthcare resources. We investigated the performance of prediction models based on machinelearning algorithms compared with a previous risk stratification model using traditional multiple logistic regression, for predicting the risk of a LOS of > 2 days after fast-track total hip and knee replacement. Patients and methods: 3 different machine learning classifiers were trained on data from the Lundbeck Centre for Fast-track Hip and Knee Replacement Database (LCD

The differential impacts of social deprivation and social fragmentation on suicides: A lesson from Hong Kong.

INTRODUCTION: Little research has conducted to examine the association between social deprivation and social fragmentation, overall and method-specific suicide risk, and how these associations may change over time. This study investigated the association between social deprivation and social fragmentation with overall and method-specific suicide in Hong Kong from 1999 to 2018. METHODS: Suicide death data of each small tertiary planning unit (STPU) was obtained from the Census and Statistics Department of Hong Kong. Socio-economic characteristics in STPU level were obtained from Census and Bi-

Updating Urinary Microbiome Analyses to Enhance Biologic Interpretation.

OBJECTIVE: An approach for assessing the urinary microbiome is 16S rRNA gene sequencing, where analysis methods are rapidly evolving. This re-analysis of an existing dataset aimed to determine whether updated bioinformatic and statistical techniques affect clinical inferences. METHODS: A prior study compared the urinary microbiome in 123 women with mixed urinary incontinence (MUI) and 84 controls. We obtained unprocessed sequencing data from multiple variable regions, processed operational taxonomic unit (OTU) tables from the original analysis, and de-identified clinical data. We re-processed

Automated diagnosis of coronary artery disease using scalogram-based tensor decomposition with heart rate signals.

Early identification of coronary artery disease (CAD) can facilitate timely clinical intervention and save lives. This study aims to develop a machine learning framework that uses tensor analysis on heart rate (HR) signals to automate the CAD detection task. A third-order tensor representing a time-frequency relationship is constructed by fusing scalograms as vertical slices of the tensor. Each scalogram is computed from the considered time frame of a given HR signal. The derived scalogram represents the heterogeneity of data as a two-dimensional map. These two-dimensional maps are stacked one

Switches, stability and reversals in the evolutionary history of sexual systems in fish.

Sexual systems are highly diverse and have profound consequences for population dynamics and resilience. Yet, little is known about how they evolved. Using phylogenetic Bayesian modelling and a sample of 4614 species, we show that gonochorism is the likely ancestral condition in teleost fish. While all hermaphroditic forms revert quickly to gonochorism, protogyny and simultaneous hermaphroditism are evolutionarily more stable than protandry. In line with theoretical expectations, simultaneous hermaphroditism does not evolve directly from gonochorism but can evolve slowly from sequential hermap

Functional and sex-specific dynamics of ectoparasite size evolution in marine isopod-fish interactions: Harrison's rule and increasing variance.

Harrison's rule, a pattern predicting that the body size of parasites correlates positively with the size of their hosts, is well-supported. However, its interaction with highly distinct "guilds" of closely related parasites warrants further exploration. The increasing variance hypothesis predicts that the variance in parasite size should also increase with the size of their hosts. Though untested, in parasite taxa with differential sex-dependent pressures on body size, this relationship should also be divergent across sexes due to differential size-fecundity relationships. We compiled global

Novel Privacy Preserving Non-Invasive Sensing-Based Diagnoses of Pneumonia Disease Leveraging Deep Network Model.

This article presents non-invasive sensing-based diagnoses of pneumonia disease, exploiting a deep learning model to make the technique non-invasive coupled with security preservation. Sensing and securing healthcare and medical images such as X-rays that can be used to diagnose viral diseases such as pneumonia is a challenging task for researchers. In the past few years, patients' medical records have been shared using various wireless technologies. The wireless transmitted data are prone to attacks, resulting in the misuse of patients' medical records. Therefore, it is important to secure me

Prediction of inpatient pressure ulcers based on routine healthcare data using machine learning methodology.

Despite the relevance of pressure ulcers (PU) in inpatient care, the predictive power and role of care-related risk factors (e.g. anesthesia) remain unclear. We investigated the predictability of PU incidence and its association with multiple care variables. We included all somatic cases between 2014 and 2018 with length of stay ≥ 2d in a German university hospital. For regression analyses and prediction we used Bayesian Additive Regression Trees (BART) as nonparametric modeling approach. To assess predictive accuracy, we compared BART, random forest, logistic regression (LR) and least absolut

Depressive and anxiety symptoms in patients with COPD: A network analysis.

BACKGROUND: Individuals with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) often develop anxiety and depression, which worsen illness management and prognosis. Physical and psychological symptoms, contextual and illness-related factors display complex reciprocal interactions, which give rise to heterogeneous presentations. Examining the patterns of association between specific physical and psychological symptoms in patients with COPD may help to focus on the precision of the patient-centred care. RESEARCH QUESTION: We used network analyses to examine the links between symptoms of COPD, depress

A Bayesian approach to simultaneous adjustment of misclassification and missingness in categorical covariates.

This study considers concurrent adjustment of misclassification and missingness in categorical covariates in regression models. Under various misclassification and missingness mechanisms, we derive a general mixture regression structure for regression models that can incorporate multiple surrogates of categorical covariates that are subject to misclassification and missingness. In simulation studies, we demonstrate that including observations with missingness and/or multiple surrogates of the covariate helps alleviate the efficiency loss caused by misclassification. In addition, we study the e
