Prenatal exome sequencing (ES) can establish rare genetic diagnoses in a fetus but may also lead to occult genetic diagnosis in a biological parent. We present a case of dual fetal and maternal diagnosis by prenatal ES, in a fetus with unexplained anemia and in a pregnant patient with sickle cell disease (SCD) and recurrent unexplained hypoxia. ES identified a novel, likely pathogenic gamma globin variant, HbF Mission Bay HBG2 (c.86T > A, p.Leu29Gln), in both the fetus and mother. OBJECTIVE: This study investigated the prevalence of psittacine beak and feather disease virus (BFDV), avian polyomavirus (APV) and psittacine adenovirus (PsAdV) in captive psittacine birds around Port Phillip Bay, Victoria, Australia.
METHODS: Samples of fresh droppings were collected from 118 psittacine birds (109 clinically normal and 9 with feather abnormalities) from 11 avaries in different locations and were used for detection of BFDV, APV and PsAdV using PCR.

OBJECTIVE: To study the epidemiology and pathogenicity of mixed infection of Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) strains with multiple vacA m-region subtypes and/or iceA mixed genotype among the Bai, Naxi, and Han populations in Yunnan province.
METHODS: Gastric mucous membrane were obtained by gastroscopy from 444 patients with digestive ulcer or chronic gastritis, 165 of Han nationality, 117 of Bai nationality, and 162 of Naxi nationality. H. pylori was isolated from 109 patients and cultured. RT-PCR was used to detect the Helicobacter pylori strains vacA gene subtype and iceA genes.

OBJECTIVES: Botulism cases due to traditional Alaska Native fermented foods occur periodically in Southwest Alaska. In this population, we conducted a survey on knowledge, attitudes, and practices related to botulism and fermented foods.
METHODS: We interviewed 140 adults randomly chosen from nine villages. Data collected included fermented food consumption frequency; knowledge about the cause and symptoms of botulism; and fermented food preparation methods.

The in vitro activity of a novel 8-methoxyquinolone, BAY 12-8039, against recent clinical isolates of Streptococcus pneumoniae (n = 404), Haemophilus influenzae (n = 330), and Moraxella catarrhalis (n = 250) was evaluated. Lifestyle, sexual history, and medical history characteristics were analyzed as risk factors for non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (NHL) in a population-based case-control study of 1593 subjects with NHL and 2515 control subjects conducted in the San Francisco Bay Area between 1988 and 1995.
