A population survey of smallpox knowledge, perceptions, and healthcare-seeking behavior surrounding the Iraq invasion--Connecticut 2002-03.

BACKGROUND: Knowledge and perceptions about smallpox would probably influence public behavior following an intentional smallpox release. We assessed public knowledge, perceptions, and related healthcare-seeking behavior in Connecticut during the period of heightened interest in smallpox preparedness surrounding the Iraq invasion. METHODS: Smallpox-related questions were added to Connecticut's Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System survey, an ongoing statewide adult population-based survey during December 2002-July 2003 and November-December 2003. RESULTS: Among 4,074 respondents, when as…

Factors associated with all-cause mortality in tuberculosis patients in a Malaysian tertiary hospital.

INTRODUCTION: The all-cause mortality for tuberculosis is 1 in every 10 patients in Malaysia. The currently available national surveillance database does not record patients' variables such as socio-economic factors, existing co-morbidities, and risk behavior for investigation. An electronic medical record system can capture this missing information and use it to determine all-cause mortality factors more accurately. Our study aims to determine the factors associated with all-cause mortality in a cohort of tuberculosis patients in a Malaysian tertiary hospital which is equipped with an electro

A comparison of alcohol and commercial tobacco use in populous American Indian/Alaska Native states.

BACKGROUND: Modern research suggests that the racial influence on smoking and drinking behaviors may not be as prevalent as once thought. This study utilizes national survey data to compare binge drinking and commercial cigarette smoking behaviors between American Indians/Alaskan Natives (AI/AN) and non-Hispanic Whites in the five most populous AI/AN U.S. states. METHODS: Data were analyzed from the Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS) from 2018 to 2022; White (n=79,405), AI/AN (n=11,007). Data analyses include frequency statistics, followed by two model evaluations comparing ma…

Impact of hysterectomy and bilateral oophorectomy on race-specific rates of corpus, cervical, and ovarian cancers in the United States.

PURPOSE: Population-based cancer incidence rates of the corpus uteri, cervix uteri, and ovaries are underestimated if they fail to remove women not at risk for developing the cancers from the denominator in the race calculation. This study compares incidence rates among selected racial groups for these cancers before and after correction for prevalence of hysterectomy and bilateral oophorectomy. METHODS: The study covers 1998 through 2002 and involves Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results Program; Behavior Risk Factor Surveillance System; and National Health Interview Survey data. Behavioral and Demographic Profiles of HIV Transmission and Exposure Networks in Florida: Network Analysis of HIV Contact Tracing Data.

BACKGROUND: To complete the Ending the HIV Epidemic initiative in areas with high HIV incidence, there needs to be a greater understanding of the demographic, behavioral, and geographic factors that influence the rate of new HIV diagnoses. This information will aid the creation of targeted prevention and intervention efforts. OBJECTIVE: This study aims to identify the geographic distribution of risk groups and their role within potential transmission networks in Florida. METHODS: Public data from the Florida Department of Health and behavioral data from the Surveillance Tools and Reporting S

Statewide estimation of racial/ethnic populations of men who have sex with men in the U.S.

OBJECTIVES: Men who have sex with men (MSM) bear the greatest burden of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)/acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) in every state in the U.S., but their populations are poorly defined. We estimated and compared populations of MSM in 2007 by region, state, and race/ethnicity. METHODS: We averaged findings from two statistical models we had previously developed to estimate the total state-specific percentage and number of males who were MSM. The models were based, respectively, on state-specific rural/ suburban/urban characteristics and an index using state-spe

Cervical cancer screening in the US-Mexico border region: a binational analysis.

Cervical cancer mortality is high along the US-Mexico border. We describe the prevalence of a recent Papanicolaou screening test (Pap) among US and Mexican border women. We analyzed 2006 cross-sectional data from Mexico's National Survey of Health and Nutrition and the US Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System. Women aged 20-77 years in 44 US border counties (n = 1,724) and 80 Mexican border municipios (n = 1,454) were studied. We computed weighted proportions for a Pap within the past year by age, education, employment, marital status, health insurance, health status, risk behaviors, and …

Sociodemographic Disparities in Binge and Heavy Drinking Among U.S. Adults, 2024.

INTRODUCTION: Excessive alcohol use remains a leading contributor to preventable morbidity and mortality in the U.S. and is distributed unevenly across sociodemographic groups. Using recent nationally representative data, the authors examined disparities in binge and heavy drinking among U.S. adults. METHODS: Data from the cross-sectional 2024 Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (unweighted n=388,327 adults aged ≥18 years) were analyzed. Current binge drinking was defined as ≥5 drinks for men or ≥4 drinks for women on 1 occasion monthly, and heavy drinking was defined as >14 drinks and…

Characteristics associated with HIV infection among heterosexuals in urban areas with high AIDS prevalence --- 24 cities, United States, 2006-2007.

In the United States, approximately one in three new human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infections are transmitted via heterosexual contact. To monitor HIV risk behaviors and HIV prevalence among heterosexuals and other populations, CDC surveys persons in selected metropolitan statistical areas (MSAs), using the National HIV Behavioral Surveillance System (NHBS). This report summarizes data collected from heterosexuals in 24 MSAs with a high prevalence of acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) that participated in NHBS during 2006-2007. Of 14,837 heterosexuals aged 18-50 years who were inte

Racial/Ethnic Inequities in Adverse Childhood Experiences and Selected Health-Related Behaviors and Problems Among Maryland Adolescents.

We examined racial/ethnic inequities in the prevalence of adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) and examined the association between ACEs and selected health-related behaviors and problems. Data for this cross-sectional study come from the 2018 Maryland Youth Risk Behavior Survey/Youth Tobacco Survey, a statewide survey of high school students (n = 40,188). ACEs included caregiver verbal abuse and household food insecurity, substance use or gambling, mental illness, and involvement with the criminal justice system. We estimated the prevalence of ACEs overall and by race/ethnicity, and then used
