Influence of visual biofeedback and inherent stability on trunk postural control.

BACKGROUND: For individuals who never achieve independent standing, rehabilitation is focused on trunk posture and balance control. Visual biofeedback has the potential to augment sitting balance training, however previous work in this area has been limited to standing. RESEARCH QUESTION: To what extent do different types of visual biofeedback influence trunk sway in sitting? METHODS: Twelve healthy young adults sat on an articulating bench. During 'sway referencing' trials, the bench tilted up and down in proportion to trunk sway in the frontal plane. This paradigm increased difficulty of t

Inalambric Biofeedback Devices to Analyze Strength Manifestation in Military Population.

The study of the effect of stress on both combatants physiological and anatomical systems have been poor studied in the specific literature. The present research aimed to study the effect of combat stress in strength manifestations of leg flexor-extensor muscles and the anaerobic metabolism of soldiers. Before and after asymmetrical combat simulation were analyzed parameters of blood lactate concentration, explosive leg strength manifestation and contractile capacity of leg muscle in 186 professional soldiers. Results showed a significant increase (p < 0.05) in blood lactate values (2.23 ± 0.9

Voluntary Control of Epileptiform Spike-Wave Discharges in Awake Rats.

Genetically inherited absence epilepsy in humans is typically characterized by brief (seconds) spontaneous seizures, which involve spike-wave discharges (SWDs) in the EEG and interruption of consciousness and ongoing behavior. Genetic (inbred) models of this disorder in rats have been used to examine mechanisms, comorbidities, and antiabsence drugs. SWDs have also been proposed as models of complex partial seizures (CPSs) following traumatic brain injury (post-traumatic epilepsy). However, the ictal characteristics of these rat models, including SWDs and associated immobility, are also prevale

Factors Associated With Response to Biofeedback Therapy for Dyssynergic Defecation.

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Biofeedback therapy is effective for dyssynergic defecation (DD), but it is not widely available or reimbursed, and is labor intensive. It is therefore important to select the appropriate patients for this treatment. We investigated symptoms and demographic, manometric, and other factors associated with outcomes of biofeedback therapy in patients with DD. METHODS: We performed a post hoc analysis of 2 prospective studies of biofeedback therapy in 127 adult outpatients (18-75 years old, 120 female) with chronic constipation who failed to respond to treatment with dietary fib

Integrated low-intensity biofeedback therapy in fecal incontinence: evidence that "good" in-home anal sphincter exercise practice makes perfect.

BACKGROUND: Biofeedback therapy (BFT) is an established treatment for fecal incontinence (FI), with access often being restricted to tertiary centers due to resources and the perceived requirement for high-intensity regimes. However, the optimal regime remains unknown. We evaluated outcomes from our low-intensity integrated BFT program in a secondary care center. METHODS: Outcomes of our BFT service for FI were evaluated retrospectively. Response was defined by ≥50% improvement in FI frequency from baseline or complete continence. Responders were compared to non-responders for factors includi

Investigating the effects of visual biofeedback therapy on recovery of postural balance in stroke patients using a complexity measure.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Postural balance deficit is one of the common post-stroke disabilities. Providing visual biofeedback while balance activities are performed is a way to improve postural balance disorders following stroke. But among the research publications, there is incoherency about the positive effects of visual biofeedback therapy. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of using visual biofeedback as an adjunct to physical therapy exercises on recovery of postural balance of stroke patients. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 31 hemiplegic stroke patients were recr

Short and long-term effects of gait retraining using real-time biofeedback to reduce knee hyperextension pattern in young women.

The use of real-time biofeedback has been shown to enable individuals to make changes to their gait patterns. It remains unknown whether the short-term improvements reported in previous studies are retained in the longer term. In this study, the paradigm used to investigate the short and long-term effects of real-time biofeedback was modifying knee range of motion during gait to prevent knee hyperextension in women. The purpose of this study was to investigate the short-term (1-month follow up) and long-term (8-month follow up) effects of a gait retraining program using real-time biofeedback t

Effect of visual biofeedback of posterior tongue movement on articulation rehabilitation in dysarthria patients.

Articulation is driven by various combinations of movements of the lip, tongue, soft palate, pharynx and larynx, where the tongue plays an especially important role. In patients with cerebrovascular disorder, lingual motor function is often affected, causing dysarthria. We aimed to evaluate the effect of visual biofeedback of posterior tongue movement on articulation rehabilitation in dysarthria patients with cerebrovascular disorder. Fifteen dysarthria patients (10 men and 5 women; mean age, 70.7 ± 10.3 years) agreed to participate in this study. A device for measuring the movement of the pos

Treatment of fecal incontinence: state of the science summary for the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases workshop.

This is the second of a two-part summary of a National Institutes of Health conference on fecal incontinence (FI) that summarizes current treatments and identifies research priorities. Conservative medical management consisting of patient education, fiber supplements or antidiarrheals, behavioral techniques such as scheduled toileting, and pelvic floor exercises restores continence in up to 25% of patients. Biofeedback, often recommended as first-line treatment after conservative management fails, produces satisfaction with treatment in up to 76% and continence in 55%; however, outcomes depend

Anorectal conditions: rectal prolapse.

Rectal prolapse, the protrusion of the layers of the rectal wall through the anal canal, may be partial (mucosal) or complete (full thickness). Although prolapse is most common among older women, it affects individuals of all ages, including children. Associated fecal incontinence and constipation are typical. Urinary incontinence and uterovaginal/bladder prolapse also may coexist. Some patients may have rectal ulcers. Diagnosis is predominantly clinical; visualization of the prolapse may require the patient to strain while sitting or squatting. Imaging studies, including fluoroscopic or dynam

RESPeRATE: the role of paced breathing in hypertension treatment.

Despite a good adherence to lifestyle modifications and antihypertensive drugs, hypertension remains resistant in more than one-third of patients, thus creating the need for additional strategies, including non-pharmacologic approaches. Slow and deep breathing ("paced breathing") associated in the past with meditation has a direct antihypertensive effect by increasing baroreflex sensitivity. With the method of guiding the pace of breathing, a US Food and Drug Administration-certified device, RESPeRATE, may offer an easy, efficient, inexpensive, and noninvasive option for treating hypertension.

Modulation of frontal and parietal neuronal activity by visuomotor learning. An ERP analysis of implicit and explicit pursuit tracking tasks.

The present study investigated changes in frontal and parietal activity related to visuomotor learning. Improvement in task performance should be achieved by a transition from feedback control to feedforward control. Event-related potential (ERP) activity related to visual feedback analysis of successful error corrections was expected to decrease at parietal scalp locations. (Pre-) motor activity related to the execution of directional changes should increase and begin earlier. While using a mouse or a joystick for cursor control, subjects performed four different conditions of a pursuit track

On the number of trials needed for a stable feedback-related negativity.

Feedback-related negativity is an event-related brain potential elicited by negative feedback. Its properties make it a valuable tool for the assessment of cognitive-affective processes that are involved in feedback and reward processing. The present study sought to determine the minimum number of trials that are required to obtain a reliable FRN component using a simple gambling paradigm. Three independent groups of young participants and one group of old participants were used. In the experimental conditions with healthy young controls, 20 trials were sufficient to measure the optimal FRN am

Bowel management for the treatment of pediatric fecal incontinence.

Fecal incontinence is a devastating underestimated problem, affecting a large number of individuals all over the world. Most of the available literature relates to the management of adults. The treatments proposed are not uniformly successful and have little application in the pediatric population. This paper presents the experience of 30 years, implementing a bowel management program, for the treatment of fecal incontinence in over 700 pediatric patients, with a success rate of 95%. The main characteristics of the program include the identification of the characteristics of the colon of each

The effects of self-generated synchronous and asynchronous visual speech feedback on overt stuttering frequency.

PURPOSE: Relatively recent research documents that visual choral speech, which represents an externally generated form of synchronous visual speech feedback, significantly enhanced fluency in those who stutter. As a consequence, it was hypothesized that self-generated synchronous and asynchronous visual speech feedback would likewise enhance fluency. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of self-generated visual feedback (i.e., synchronous speech feedback with a mirror and asynchronous speech feedback via delayed visual feedback) on overt stuttering frequency in t

Surgical and behavioral treatments for vestibulodynia: two-and-one-half year follow-up and predictors of outcome.

OBJECTIVE: To estimate whether treatment gains for provoked vestibulodynia participants randomly assigned to vestibulectomy, biofeedback, and cognitive-behavioral therapy in a previous study would be maintained from the last assessment-a 6-month follow-up-to the present 2.5-year follow-up. Although all three treatments yielded significant improvements at 6-month follow-up, vestibulectomy resulted in approximately twice the pain reduction as compared with the two other treatments. A second goal of the present study was to identify predictors of outcome. METHODS: In a university hospital, 51 of
