Despite the considerable clinical, radiologic, and functional benefits of biologic inhibitors in inflammatory arthritides, some concern exists regarding the occurrence of infections in patients treated with these agents. Clearly, comorbidities such as diabetes mellitus, heart disease, disability, and concurrent immunosuppressive medication all contribute to the risk of infection. Increased and closer observation may be in part responsible for some of the reported increases in the rates of mild infections with these drugs. The development of serious infections, particularly TB, in patients taki

Tumor necrosis factor (TNF) inhibitors are widely used biologics in the management of rheumatoid arthritis (RA), but they can occasionally induce paradoxical inflammatory manifestations. We present a case of a 28-year-old female patient with well-controlled rheumatoid arthritis who developed leukocytoclastic vasculitis (LCV) secondary to infliximab therapy. Despite initial treatment with alternative biologics and corticosteroids, her condition required escalation to rituximab therapy. Histopathological examination confirmed leukocytoclastic vasculitis involving vessels in the deep dermis. Afte

Patterned immobilization of synthetic and biological ligands on material surfaces with controlled surface densities is important for various bioanalytical and cell biological purposes. This paper describes the synthesis, characterization, and application of a novel silane coupling agent bearing a photoremovable succinimidyl carbonate, which enables the photopatterning of various primary amines on glass and silicon surfaces. The silane coupling agent is 1-[5-methoxy-2-nitro-4-(3-trimethoxysilylpropyloxy)phenyl]ethyl N-succinimidyl carbonate. The distinct feature of this molecule is that it has

BACKGROUND: This study aimed to evaluate the impact of severe asthma (SA) treatments after 12 months in achieving clinical remission (CR) within the context of the Severe Asthma Network in Italy (SANI) using the recent SANI definition of CR on treatment.
METHODS: CR has been defined by SANI as complete, partial, and no CR. Complete CR is defined by the absence of oral corticosteroids (OCS), no symptoms, no exacerbations, and stable lung function, and partial CR requires the absence of OCS and the fulfillment of 2 out of the other 3 criteria. Patients who do not meet the previous criteria do n

Tuberculosis (TB) still represents an important issue for public health in underdeveloped countries, but the use of antitumor necrosis factor agents (anti-TNF) for the treatment of inflammatory rheumatic disorders has reopened the problem also in countries with low TB incidence, due to the increased risk of TB reactivation in subjects with latent tuberculosis infection (LTBI). Over the last 5 years, several non-anti-TNF-targeted biologics have been licensed for the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis, ankylosing spondylitis, and psoriatic arthritis. We reviewed the epidemiology of TB, the role o

Multiple eruptive dermatofibromas (MEDFs) are characterized by the rapid development of multiple dermatofibromas within a short period, often associated with underlying immune dysregulation or immunosuppressive therapies. We report a rare case of MEDFs in a young male with refractory psoriasis, who developed multiple cutaneous tumors following sequential treatment with biologic agents: secukinumab, guselkumab, and adalimumab. Despite achieving partial control of psoriasis, the patient experienced the onset of widespread, asymptomatic dermatofibromas, leading to the cessation of biologic therap

Because of its high case-fatality rate, its very high transmission potential, and the worldwide shortage of effective vaccine, smallpox tops international lists of over a dozen possible bioterror and biologic warfare agents. In a scenario involving aerosol variola virus release, tens to hundreds of first-generation cases would ensue, as would hundreds to thousands of subsequent cases resulting from person-to-person transmission. A smallpox outbreak in Israel must not be regarded as a doomsday event: the methods of smallpox outbreak control are known and will be implemented. The rapidity with w

OBJECTIVES: This study aims to evaluate non-melanoma skin cancer (NMSC) risk associated with abatacept treatment for rheumatoid arthritis (RA).
METHODS: This evaluation included 16 abatacept RA clinical trials and 6 observational studies. NMSC incidence rates (IRs)/1000 patient-years (p-y) of exposure were compared between patients treated with abatacept versus placebo, conventional synthetic (cs) disease-modifying antirheumatic drugs (DMARDs) and other biological/targeted synthetic (b/ts)DMARDs. For observational studies, a random-effects model was used to pool rate ratios (RRs).

Bacillus endospores (spores) are generally resistant to environmental and food processing-related stress including thermal and non-thermal processing in the food industry, such as pasteurization, and UV-C inactivation. Bacillus thuringiensis insecticidal crystals and spores as the active substances in commercial biopesticides can also be introduced to vegetable foods and their food processing environment due to pre-harvest treatment of edible crops. The resistance of B. thuringiensis biopesticide spores in comparison to the genetically closely related foodborne B. cereus against heat and UV-C

Large-scale, real-world studies on the side effects of systemic therapies (including biologics) in patients with psoriasis are limited. We aimed to calculate the risk of malignancy in patients with psoriasis who were treated with systemic medications. Nested case-control analyses were performed among psoriasis patients without a history of malignancy. We recruited 4188 patients with newly diagnosed psoriasis and successive malignancies, and 8376 matched controls from the National Health Insurance Research Database in Taiwan. The therapy duration was within 5 years before malignancy onset and f

Fraxinellone is an important botanical lactone compound and has been demonstrated to have insecticidal activity. To provide theoretical support to the assessment on the safety of utilizing fraxinellone as a natural insecticidal agent, the interactions between fraxinellone and armyworm DNA, salmon sperm DNA and calf thymus DNA were investigated using UV-Vis absorption spectroscopy, isothermal titration calorimetry, and molecular docking. Results showed that there were two types of combinations between fraxinellone and three kinds of DNA. Type I combination had an equilibrium constant of combina

Lippia alba, belonging to the Verbenaceae family, is one of the most commonly utilized medicinal plants in folk medicine. The allelopathic activity was assessed using seeds of Lactuca sativa (lettuce) and Allium cepa (onion) by assessing the growth of the radicle and hypocotyl. The tests showed allelopathic efficiency in inhibiting the growth of lettuce and onion seeds. The best results for allelopathic activity were presented by the dichloromethane (DCM) fraction of the fresh plant, which inhibited radicle (23.04-100% lettuce and 64.17-66.36% onion) and hypocotyl (16.77-100% lettuce and 65.10

Certain strains of fluorescent pseudomonads are important biological components of agricultural soils that are suppressive to diseases caused by pathogenic fungi on crop plants. The biocontrol abilities of such strains depend essentially on aggressive root colonization, induction of systemic resistance in the plant, and the production of diffusible or volatile antifungal antibiotics. Evidence that these compounds are produced in situ is based on their chemical extraction from the rhizosphere and on the expression of antibiotic biosynthetic genes in the producer strains colonizing plant roots.

Long-term application of synthetic pesticides for potato late blight control has raised many ecological concerns, while broader impacts of biopesticides on production systems remain unclear. Field trials compared the effects of pesticides dimethomorph (synthetic) and carvacrol (biological) against an untreated control in a potato production system, integrating untargeted metabolomics, metabarcoding and quality trait analyses. Compared with the control group, both pesticide treatments upregulated tuber lipid metabolism but downregulated leaf defense-associated metabolism. For rhizosphere commun
