Non-equimolar stereocomplex polylactide fibers strengthen and toughen poly(L-lactic acid) via interfacial stereocomplexation while retaining transparency.

In this work, stereocomplex PLA (SC-PLA) fibers with various PLLA/PDLA mass ratios were fabricated and subsequently incorporated into the poly(L-lactic acid) (PLLA) matrix to prepare all-PLA composites. By deviating from the stoichiometric ratio toward PDLA excess, in situ interfacial stereocomplexation was triggered, converting the initially weak fiber-matrix interface into a robust stereocomplex (SC)-mediated interface. Remarkably, although the PDLA-rich SC-PLA fibers (LD12) exhibited the lowest intrinsic SC crystallinity (35.1%), the corresponding composite showed the highest SC content and

Developmental and behavioral disruption in zebrafish larvae by mixtures of anatoxin-a and neonicotinoids.

Harmful algal blooms caused by cyanobacteria have intensified globally due to eutrophication and climate change, posing increasing risks to aquatic ecosystems and public health. During blooms, cyanobacteria can release potent neurotoxins such as anatoxin-a, a nicotinic acetylcholine receptor (nAChR) agonist that causes rapid neurotoxicity. Likewise, neonicotinoid insecticides, including acetamiprid and thiacloprid, also target nAChRs and frequently contaminate aquatic environments. Despite their shared mode of action and environmental co-occurrence, their combined toxicity remains poorly under

Halogen Engineering and Orbital Origins of Large Second-Harmonic Generation in Organic-Inorganic Hybrid Metal Halides.

Organic-inorganic hybrid metal halides (OIHMHs) have emerged as promising nonlinear optical (NLO) materials due to their structural tunability and potential for large second-harmonic-generation (SHG) responses. Here, using first-principles density functional theory calculations, we systematically investigate the structural, electronic, and optical properties of 12 noncentrosymmetric compounds in 3-PyDMX3 and 4-MePDMX3 (M = Zn, Cd; X = Cl, Br, I). Our results reveal a clear and consistent enhancement of SHG with an increasing halogen atomic size, with iodide compounds exhibiting the strongest r

The PERK inhibitor GSK2606414 evokes developmental defects in zebrafish consistent with Wolcott-Rallison syndrome phenotypes.

BACKGROUND: Protein kinase RNA-like endoplasmic reticulum kinase (PERK) is an endoplasmic reticulum stress kinase whose loss of function disturbs human development, leading to skeletal dysplasia and permanent neonatal diabetes, as in the Wolcott-Rallison Syndrome (WRS). The lack of effective, less invasive therapies for developmental diseases highlights the need for animal models that replicate complex pathological phenotypes, while allowing scalable drug screening. Zebrafish high fecundity and rapid development enable efficient in vivo drug testing. We assessed zebrafish’s potential for study

Immunoglobulin Light Chain Amyloidosis: 2026 Update on Diagnosis, Prognosis, and Treatment.

DISEASE OVERVIEW: AL amyloidosis is a clonal plasma cell disorder in which fragments of immunoglobulin light or heavy chain are deposited in tissues. Clinical features depend on organs involved but can include HFpEF, nephrotic syndrome, hepatic dysfunction, peripheral/autonomic neuropathy, and "atypical smoldering multiple myeloma or MGUS." DIAGNOSIS: Tissue biopsy stained with Congo red demonstrating amyloid deposits with apple-green birefringence is required. Organ biopsy is not required in 85% of patients. Verification that amyloid is composed of immunoglobulin light chains is mandatory.

Intraocular Lens Opacification in a Patient With Gyrate Atrophy With a Subluxated Intraocular Lens.

BACKGROUND Gyrate atrophy is a rare metabolic disease that profoundly impacts the choroid and retina. This condition is recognized for its ocular comorbidities, including a predisposition to the development of posterior subcapsular cataract and compromised zonular integrity, both of which ultimately necessitate surgical management. While cataract surgery is a common intervention, it can have long-term sequelae. Intraocular lens (IOL) opacity is a known complication, with various morphological patterns documented in the ophthalmic literature. However, no specific pattern of IOL opacification ha

Acute on chronic liver failure in erythropoietic protoporphyria: A case report and review of the literature.

Erythropoietic protoporphyria (EPP) is a disease caused by an inborn error of heme biosynthesis. It manifests as painful photosensitivity in childhood. Liver disease occurs due to the deposition of protoporphyrin. Cholestasis due to protoporphyrin leads to a vicious cycle of worsening, which can lead to liver failure. A 29-year-old woman presented with a three-month history of intermittent low-grade fever and a one-month history of jaundice. She had a history of painful blisters over the skin in childhood that started at two years of age and progressed to multiple contractures from healed ulce

Multimodal analysis of biomineralization within a collagen scaffolding in a rat calvarial defect model by using decalcified and undecalcified specimens.

This study histologically evaluated the biomineralization process during bone regeneration and the in vivo behavior of a collagen sheet used as scaffolding in a rat 5-mm calvarial defect model. Two experimental groups were established: a group using collagen sheet and bone substitute (BC group), and a group using bone substitute alone (BO group). Bone regeneration was assessed by computed tomography (CT) and both decalcified and undecalcified sections were analyzed using histological staining (hematoxylin and eosin, Villanueva-Goldner [VG], von Kossa, and Join of the Five dyes Revealing CoLlag

Point-of-care testing of hyponatremia and hypernatremia levels: An optoplasmonic biosensing approach.

In the human body, sodium ion (Na+) is the principal extracellular cation and its imbalance in blood or lymph results in either hyponatremia or hypernatremia conditions. Any of these scenarios have fatal effects on a patient's health over time. However, the existing technologies limit quick point-of-care (POC) testing options. To overcome the challenges associated with prompt diagnosis, we proposed a photonic crystal fiber (PCF) based surface plasmon resonance (SPR) sensor for in situ rapid testing of Na+ ion levels in patient's blood samples. A unique PCF sensor with a modified square lattice

Fine-needle aspiration of amyloidoma: A critical analysis.

BACKGROUND: Amyloid, presenting as a mass, is termed amyloidoma. Among the reported cases, fine-needle aspiration (FNA) of amyloid is often misinterpreted as acellular nondiagnostic material. METHODS: A computer search of all FNAs was performed and cases diagnosed as amyloidoma were identified. RESULTS: Among 11,956 cases and 20,634 FNAs, there were six cases and 12 FNAs of amyloidoma. One case with mucin/myxoid matrix was misinterpreted as amyloid, which on our review was Congo red negative. All five other cases of amyloidoma were adequate for evaluation. The smears showed most of the aspir

Applications of Isosceles Triangular Coupling Structure in Optical Switching and Sensing.

In the case of waveguide-based devices, once they are fabricated, their optical properties are already determined and cannot be dynamically controlled, which limits their applications in practice. In this paper, an isosceles triangular-coupling structure which consists of an isosceles triangle coupled with a two-bus waveguide is proposed and researched numerically and theoretically. The coupled mode theory (CMT) is introduced to verify the correctness of the simulation results, which are based on the finite difference time domain (FDTD). Due to the existence of the side mode and angular mode,

Influence of side-methyl substitution position on the phase state and microwave dielectric properties of triphenylacetylene-based liquid crystals.

Liquid crystal materials are well known in display applications, and their unique birefringence and electrical tunability can be utilised in microwave devices. This innovative technology modulates and filters microwave signals, replacing conventional semiconductors for a broad operational frequency band and tunable phase shift. Although isothiocyanatobiphenylacetylene-based liquid crystals exhibit low viscosity and large dielectric anisotropy, their applications in microwave communication are hampered by their broad near-crystalline phase temperature ranges. To address this limitation, this st

Amyloidosis Found in the Breast: A Case Report.

BACKGROUND Amyloidosis results in fibrillar sheets of beta-pleated amorphous congophilic protein deposition in the extracellular space. Breast amyloidosis is a rare entity, with the first case reported in 1973 and only 2 major case series published since. These deposits can have local or systemic manifestations and typically present unilaterally, although bilateral involvement has been described. Some reported cases of amyloidosis have been linked to breast cancer. CASE REPORT The patient was a 60-year-old woman who presented to the breast surgery clinic for evaluation after image-guided biops

Acute Kidney Injury Following Star Fruit Ingestion: A Case Series.

Star fruit (Averrhoa carambola) is a popular fruit in many tropical countries, including Sri Lanka. It is rich in oxalic acid, which is nephrotoxic in higher concentrations. The development of both acute (AKI) and chronic kidney injury after oxalate nephropathy is often underrecognized. Here we discuss the risk factors, clinical features, treatment, and outcomes of 4 patients who developed AKI after star fruit ingestion. Baseline clinical characteristics, the amount of star fruit ingested, clinical presentation, investigation, and outcome of the patients (ages 28, 50, 54, and 55 y; all male) w
