BACKGROUND: To evaluate the chest computed tomography (CT) findings of patients with isolated bronchial anthracofibrosis confirmed by bronchoscopy and histopathology.
METHODOLOGY: Fifty-eight patients with isolated bronchial anthracofibrosis (29 females; mean age, 70 years) were enrolled in this study. The diagnosis of bronchial anthracofibrosis was made based on both bronchoscopy and pathology findings in all patients. The results of heart-lung transplantation are improving with increasing experience in postoperative management, but obliterative bronchiolitis may still develop late postoperatively. We have performed 19 heart-lung transplants, with 1-month, 1-year, and 2-year actuarial survival rates of 95% +/- 5%, 84% +/- 8%, and 69% +/- 16%, respectively. Most primary tracheal tumors are malignant. Malignancy of larynx and bronchi are much more likely than trachea. Tracheal tumors are most likely due to direct extension for surrounding tumors. Squamous cell carcinoma and adenoid cystic carcinoma make up about two-thirds of adult primary tracheal tumors. Because of their predominantly local growth pattern, malignant salivary gland-type tumors show a better outcome than other histologic types.

The authors revealed differences in pulmonary volumes, bronchial patency of bronchi at various levels, integral time of air transit in individuals having early anthracosilicosis and silicosis signs vs in healthy miners. During stage 1 of anthracosilicosis and silicosis respiratory function progressively deteriorates and demonstrates moderate disorders. When compared to anthracosilicosis ones, patients having polymetallic dust silicosis showed more significant decrease of the studied parameters.

Tracheobronchomegaly is a rare condition characterised by marked dilation of the trachea and the main bronchi. The clinical presentation of this disease is nonspecific and the diagnosis is based on the radiological features, especially computed tomography of chest. Pulmonary function tests are often abnormal showing airflow limitation with increased residual volume. The authors report a rare case of a 31-year-old man presenting tracheobronchomegaly is normal pulmonary function test.

Myoepithelioma is a rare salivary tumour which is usually encountered in the parotid gland. Outside the parotid, myoepithelioma may arise from minor salivary glands of the hard palate and less frequently in bronchi or breast. In this report we describe the unique case of a metachronous bilateral nasopharyngeal myoepithelioma arising from the tubaric regions. Its microscopic features, immunophenotype, and the differential diagnosis together with a review of literature are discussed.

We report a case of endobronchial tuberculosis located in the main left bronchus suspected on a CT scan and assessed by fiberoptic bronchoscopy. This localisation is not unusual, and is often associated with a normal chest radiography. Air trapping present on high resolution CT scan led to focus the examination on proximal airways and to suspect their involvement. This observation underlines the value of expiratory CT scan in demonstrating proximal stenosis of main bronchi.

An atypical case of chronic equine bronchopulmonary aspergillosis with an unusual hyphal morphology was diagnosed in a horse with Cushing's syndrome. Because of the hyphal localization in chronic ectatic bronchi and bronchioles, and juxtabronchiolar processes, the observed type of aspergillosis is similar to 'saprophytic bronchopulmonary aspergillosis' or 'semi-invasive pulmonary aspergillosis' in humans. The aetiological diagnosis of aspergillosis was accomplished by the application of a panel of monospecific polyclonal and monoclonal antibodies in immunohistochemical techniques.

Congenital abnormalities of the tracheobronchial tree are rare causes of recurrent chest infections in childhood. A case is described which shows some typical features of horseshoe lung. More detailed imaging revealed complete separation of the right and left pleural cavities and the malformation represents part of the sequestration spectrum. The case emphasises the need for careful evaluation of the pulmonary arteries, veins, bronchi and oesophagus, particularly prior to surgery.

Proximity of the proximal bronchial tree (PBT) to the high dose area may result in pulmonary toxicity. Bronchial stenosis is an adverse event that can occur after high dose to the PBT. Calcification of the airways is rarely seen in children. A male baby was born at 34 weeks with severe respiratory distress. Intubation was difficult with severe hypercarbia after intubation. Chest radiography demonstrated calcification in the tracheobronchial tree and this was confirmed with Chest CT scan. Flexible bronchoscopy confirmed long-segment funnel tracheal stenosis with visible calcifications in the trachea and bronchi. Chondrodysplasia punctata was diagnosed based on the clinical and radiological findings.

Bronchiectasis refers to dilated and thickened airways due to chronic inflammation and infections, with anatomic distortion of the bronchi. Here, we describe a 29-year-old man with a history of multiple hospitalizations for lung infection who presented to the pulmonary clinic with a complaint of worsening chronic productive cough in the previous year. This case presentation prompted a review of the etiologies of bronchiectasis in 291 recent cases admitted to Masih Daneshvari Hospital, Tehran.
