A detailed pathway and termination of thoracic duct in a Japanese female cadaver with situs inversus totalis.

Although the thoracic duct (TD) requires special attention during thoracic surgery, to our knowledge, its detailed course in the situs inversus totalis (SIT) case has not been reported. We encountered an 86-year-old Japanese female cadaver with SIT during a student anatomical practice and examine the TD. The TD originated from the cisterna chyli at the level of the 2nd lumbar vertebra, ascended along with the left side of aorta and then passed behind the aortic arch on the right side of the esophagus. The TD turned right at the first thoracic vertebra and finally emptied into the basal portion…

The occurrence of an additional (accessory) lobe of liver and undescended testis in a single cadaver: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Anatomical variations are common, some of these variations are clinically important and some are not. These variations may require treatment or they may be a variant of a normal presentation. In clinical practices, anatomical variations should not be overlooked. Anatomical variations may cause a tendency to some diseases, and may affect the symptoms, diagnosis and the course of disease. The main objective of this case report is to present the occurrence of two variations observed in a single cadaver. Even though there are reports of individual cases, these combined variations have …

Radiological evaluation of ulnar thumb metacarpophalangeal ligament reconstruction for chronic thumb instability in cadavers.

Various techniques have been described to restore metacarpal stability in the thumb. Ligament reconstruction techniques that position the bone tunnels in a triangular configuration, with the apex proximally, are optimal for stabilizing the metacarpophalangeal (MCP) joint, while preserving the thumb's range of motion. Using an interference screw ensures this reconstruction is as strong as the native ligament. Our purpose was to evaluate a new technique designed to treat cases of chronic thumb instability. We created metacarpal instability in 10 fresh cadaver forearms by sectioning the ulnar col…

CBCT imaging of the alveolar bone structure in maxilla of elderly donor cadavers and PCA analysis.

There is an important bone matrix with remodelling between dentate and edentulous samples of the human maxilla for bone metabolism. Cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) is useful for structural analysis of bone. The objective of this study was to investigate morphological data of donor cadavers in detail using CBCT imaging and principal component analysis (PCA). We analysed 38 donor cadavers using a CBCT apparatus. The analytical results defined differences in skull measurement parameters and dentate and edentulous levels using PCA. We observed cortical bone, trabecular bone, and the distance …

Evaluation of the potential killing performance of novel percussive and cervical dislocation tools in chicken cadavers.

1. Four mechanical poultry killing devices; modified Armadillo (MARM), modified Rabbit Zinger (MZIN), modified pliers (MPLI) and a novel mechanical cervical dislocation (NMCD) gloved device, were assessed for their killing potential in the cadavers of euthanised birds. 2. A 4 × 4 × 4 factorial design (batch × device × bird type + age) was employed. Ten bird cadavers per bird type and age were tested with each of the 4 devices (N = 160 birds). All cadavers were examined post-mortem to establish the anatomical damage caused. 3. NMCD, MARM and MZIN demonstrated killing potential, as well as consi…

Ultrasound-Guided Approach for L5 Dorsal Ramus Block and Fluoroscopic Evaluation in Unpreselected Cadavers.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Medial branch blocks are frequently performed to diagnose lumbar facet-joint-mediated pain. Ultrasound guidance can increase practicability and eliminate exposure to ionizing radiation when compared with fluoroscopy. However, ultrasound-guided L5 dorsal ramus block, which, together with L4 medial branch block is necessary to anesthetize the most commonly affected facet joint L5/S1, has not been described so far. The objective of this study was to develop a technique and to evaluate its accuracy with standard fluoroscopy in unpreselected cadavers. METHODS: Twenty ult…

Biomechanical analysis of screw constructs for atlantoaxial fixation in cadavers: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

OBJECT: The unique and complex biomechanics of the atlantoaxial junction make the treatment of C1-2 instability a challenge. Several screw-based constructs have been developed for atlantoaxial fixation. The biomechanical properties of these constructs have been assessed in numerous cadaver studies. The purpose of this study was to systematically review the literature on the biomechanical stability achieved using various C1-2 screw constructs and to perform a meta-analysis of the available data. METHODS: A systematic search of PubMed through July 1, 2013, was conducted using the following key …

The surgical anatomy of the piriformis tendon, with particular reference to total hip replacement: a cadaver study.

The piriformis muscle is an important landmark in the surgical anatomy of the hip, particularly the posterior approach for total hip replacement (THR). Standard orthopaedic teaching dictates that the tendon must be cut in to allow adequate access to the superior part of the acetabulum and the femoral medullary canal. However, in our experience a routine THR can be performed through a posterior approach without sacrificing this tendon. We dissected the proximal femora of 15 cadavers in order to clarify the morphological anatomy of the piriformis tendon. We confirmed that the tendon attaches on …

Evaluation of the blood and nerve supply patterns in the molar region of the maxillary sinus in Japanese cadavers.

The maxillary sinus (MS) in the maxilla bone is located near the orbit, the nasal cavity and the oral cavity; however, the positioning of the constituent bones is complex. The posterior superior alveolar branches of the maxillary artery and nerve are distributed in the lateral wall of the MS. The courses of these blood vessels and nerves are restricted by the morphology of the craniofacial bones, and the landmarks used in dental implant treatment of these courses mainly run along the lateral wall of the MS. In this study, 19 human cadavers with 34 sides of Japanese origin (ranging in age from …
