Anaphylactic shock is a cardiovascular collapse that occurs after the interaction of antigen and antibody. Common causes of anaphylactic shock are drugs, foods, venoms, and heterologous serum. Mechanisms of anaphylactic shock are thought to be peripheral vasodilatation, enhanced vascular permeability, leakage of plasma, and intravascular volume depletion. The recognition of an anaphylactic shock rests on the observation of cardiovascular collapse in association with temporal exposure to a foreign substance. In addition to cardiovascular collapse, cutaneous, respiratory and/or gastrointestinal

Recently Meniere's disease is believed to show a pathological features of endolymphatic hydrops, but the etiology of this disease has not yet been ascertained. Many investigators tried to create animal models with endolymphatic hydrops by obliterating endolymphatic sac and duct. However, these methods have not been adequate to explain the mechanism of development of Meniere's disease, because it gives mechanical damage to destroy endolymphatic sac and duct. On the other hand, Meniere's disease is thought to develop even as a result of stress. The present paper reported the conduction of an acu

The change of the venular permeability and endothelial structure was studied with the aid of fluorometry and electron microscopy after application of H2O2. Transmural transfer rate of FITC-albumin++ and permeable fraction of the vessel walls were increased. There were formed the "leaks" and transendothelial canals in the venular endothelium. Numerous local membrane injuries of the endotheliocytes and pericytes, degranulation of the mast cells and destruction of thrombocytes into the vessel lumen were detected.

Marked leukopenia and sequestration of granulocytes in the lung are consistently seen in severe early onset group B streptococcal (GBS) disease in human infants. To investigate the role of granulocytes as potential mediators in the pulmonary pathophysiology of this disease, the effects of intravenously administered GBS type III toxin were studied in young lambs before and after granulocyte depletion with hydroxyurea. Granulocyte depletion markedly reduced the 4-fold increase in total lung resistance and the decrease in dynamic compliance observed after GBS toxin. Granulocyte depletion signific

The present possibilities to measure blood flow and other magnitudes of retinal microcirculation in vivo are discussed. On this basis, a simple model designed for retinal microcirculation is presented as a tool for the clinical interpretation of measuring results. Based on the experience of over 200 measurements of retinal microcirculation magnitudes, subsequent reports give a clinical interpretation of measuring results, utilizing the measuring models presented. Thus, it is intended to demonstrate the actual clinical significance of such measurements.

The effects of local exposure to chemical irritants and mechanical stimulation on sneezing reflexes have been studied in normal and capsaicin-pretreated, conscious guinea-pigs. The influence of local and systemic capsaicin pretreatment on vascular permeability to plasma proteins and the cardiovascular effects of local application of capsaicin to the nasal mucosa have also been studied in anaesthetized animals. Local application of capsaicin (threshold dose 3 microM), nicotine (threshold dose 300 microM) or formalin to the nasal mucosa induced reflex sneezing discharges. Systemic or local capsa

The pulmonary transvascular filtration changes were investigated in nine anaesthetized open-chest dogs during acute hypoxic exposure. The tracheobronchial pulmonary lymph flow, the lymph and plasma protein concentration, the pulmonary vascular pressures and the cardiac output were measured during three consecutive steady states of about 2 h each: 1) base-line, 2) hypoxia (FIO2 = 0.10), 3) recovery from hypoxia. It was found that pulmonary arterial pressure and lung lymph flow increased in all animals during hypoxia, respectively from (average +/- SD) 19.4 +/- 4.5 to 27.1 +/- 5.6 Torr, and from

Cerebral cortical arterioles in focal neocortical areas develop increased permeability to plasma proteins and protein tracers in experimental hypertensive encephalopathy. The mechanism underlying this increased permeability has been the subject of several studies. In our previous studies of angiotensin-induced acute hypertension, pinocytosis appeared to be the principal mechanism for the increased blood-brain barrier (BBB) permeability observed. In the present study pinocytotic activity was assessed quantitatively to determine whether enhanced pinocytosis was confined to the permeable arteriol

In a recent study it was found that in Mg loaded rats, the fraction of filtered Mg (% E Mg) recovered in the bend of the loop of Henle of papilla was greater than the filtered load. However, the site of this Mg addition was unspecified and could be either the juxtamedullary proximal tubule, the pars recta, or in the papilla, the descending limb of the loop of Henle. In order to investigate the movement of Mg in the various structures of the papilla, we have studied: 1. The transport of this electrolyte along the collecting duct. 2. Its relative concentration in the loop of Henle and in the adj

Immunorepulsion is a local immunodepression which allows embryos, tumour cells, some bacteria and many parasites to survive and grow unharmed by the host immunological surveillance system. Such a local immunodepression results from the action of immunorepellents synthesized by some aggressors. These immunorepellents are able to prevent inflammatory reactions from occurring in the vicinity of the aggressors and to impede the leucocytes from fulfilling their functions.
