Commercial dry-cured grass carp products exhibit considerable flavor variation, but the microbial and biochemical characteristics associated with this variation remain unclear. In this study, six commercial products were comparatively characterized using electronic nose and tongue analyses, GC-MS, full-length 16S rRNA gene sequencing, metabolomics, and lipidomics. Among the six sampled products, Group F exhibited distinct aroma and taste profiles and showed a greater diversity and higher measured levels of volatile compounds on a wet-weight basis, with 1-octen-3-ol, hexanal, nonanal, and (E)-4

Light is a critical environmental factor in aquaculture, directly or indirectly regulating the growth, reproduction, body coloration, and biological rhythms of cultured animals. However, in koi farming, spectral composition is often overlooked or arbitrarily selected. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of different LED spectra (red light "RL", blue light "BL", yellow light "YL", white light "WL") and natural light (NL) on the growth performance, body coloration, and underlying molecular regulatory mechanisms of all-red koi (Cyprinus carpio var. koi). The results showed that WL treatment

The global expansion of carbonate-alkaline water bodies poses a major challenge to sustainable aquaculture, but the metabolic basis of splenic immune dysfunction in fish under carbonate-alkaline stress remains unclear. Here, crucian carp (Carassius auratus) were exposed to carbonate-alkaline stress (20 and 40 mmol/L NaHCO3) and exogenous α-ketoglutarate (AKG) supplementation for 30 days. Histopathological examination, ultrastructural observation, biochemical assays, and metabolomic analyses were employed to investigate the mechanisms of splenic immune dysfunction and AKG's regulatory effects.

Vitamin D3 (VD3) is a pleiotropic hormone with diverse physiological functions, but its role during early embryonic development in fish remains poorly understood. This study investigated the effects of aqueous VD3 exposure on embryonic survival, hatching, and the expression of the kiss1, kiss2, gnrh3, foxr1, and hsp70 genes in common carp (Cyprinus carpio L.). We also examined the hypothesis that common carp embryo is a site of VD3 non-genomic action and its metabolism, evaluated by measuring 25-hydroxyvitamin D3 (25OHD3) levels and confirmed by immunolocalization of VDR, PDIA3 as well as CYP2

Protein phosphatase 1 regulatory subunit 3G (PPP1R3G) is one of the regulatory subunits of protein phosphatase 1 (PP1). Current research on PPP1R3G is primarily focused on glycogen synthesis and lipid metabolism. However, the role of ppp1r3g in the innate immune response of fish has not been completely elucidated. This study demonstrated that ppp1r3g regulates RLR signaling pathway through interactions with Rig-I, Mda5, and Traf6. In parallel, Ppp1r3g inhibits platelet activation by regulating 14-3-3 zeta (14-3-3ζ) and consequently modulating the formation of the 14-3-3ζ-integrin-β3 (Itgb3) co

Toxic polonium-210 (210Po) in freshwater fish poses significant health risks to humans when consumed, as well as fish populations and other aquatic organisms. Alpha spectrometry was employed to determine 210Po activity concentrations in the organs from two omnivorous fish species, Cyprinus carpio and Squaliobarbus curriculus, collected from the Red River system across Lao Cai, Phu Tho, and Thai Binh provinces in northern Vietnam. Results revealed an uneven 210Po distribution between organs, with the lowest levels in muscle and the highest in the intestines and stomach, suggesting that digestio

Trim47, a TRIM C-VII subgroup protein characterized by a conserved SPRY domain, has been primarily studied for its ubiquitin-dependent roles in mammals. This study reports a paradigm-shifting finding in teleost immunology: grass carp Trim47 (gcTrim47) employs its SPRY domain to execute a novel, ubiquitin-independent antiviral pathway, selectively degrading GCRV-I nonstructural proteins NS38/NS80 via autophagy-mediated clearance. Unlike mammalian TRIMs, gcTrim47 antiviral activity is strictly dependent on its SPRY domain-devoid of RING/B-box domains critical for E3 ligase function-revealing an

Changes in the flavor and taste profiles of Paddy Field Carp after deodorization with perilla juice (PJ), cooking wine (CW) and a mixture of the two (PJ-CW) were analyzed using the E-nose, E-tongue, gas chromatography-ion mobility spectrometry (GC-IMS), free amino acid analysis and taste nucleotide analysis. The E-nose and E-tongue revealed that deodorization reduced the content of sulfur-containing compounds, enhanced umami, bitterness, sourness and astringency, and decreased saltiness. PCA and OPLS-DA analysis successfully distinguished between the effects of the treatments. Free amino acids

The liver is a key site for the removal of cell-free hemin during hemolysis. However, the mechanism underlying liver damage caused by hemolysis in teleost hemolytic disorderss remains unclear. In this study, the hemin incubation of grass carp liver cells (L8824) and phenylhydrazine (PHZ) injection were employed to simulate in vitro and in vivo hemolysis models. The Cell Counting Kit (CCK) assay results of the L8824 cells showed that the hemin caused obvious cell death and exhibited concentration-dependent characteristics. Furthermore, hemin stimulation significantly increased intracellular iro

Trimethyltin chloride (TMT) is a highly toxic organotin pollutant frequently found in aquatic environments, posing a significant threat to the ecological system. The kidney plays a vital role in the body's detoxification processes, and TMT present in the environment tends to accumulate in the kidneys. However, it remained unclear whether exposure to different doses of TMT could induce pyroptosis and immune dysfunction in grass carp kidney cells (CIK cells). For this purpose, after assessing the half-maximal inhibitory concentration (IC50) of TMT on CIK cells, we established a model for exposur

Aflatoxin B1 (AFB1), an important fungal toxin, exists mainly in plant feed ingredients and animals consuming feed contaminated with AFB1 will have reduced growth and impaired health condition mainly due to oxidative stress and reduced immunity. Our previous study found that AFB1 caused oxidative damage and inhibited muscle development of zebrafish. 4-Methylesculetin (4-ME), a coumarin derivative, is now used in biochemistry and medicine widely because of its antioxidant function. Whether 4-ME could alleviate the inhibition of muscle development in grass carp induced by AFB1 has not been repor

BACKGROUND: Lymphatic neoplasia may occur in various types, such as lymphoma, lymphosarcoma, lympholeukemia, and plasmacytoid leukemia. Lymphoma, defined as a malignant tumour of lymphoid tissue, has been found in a number of fish families including Esocidae and Salmonidae. However, the occurrence of lymphoma is rare in those belonging to the Cyprinidae. A final diagnosis of ocular and testicular T-cell lymphoma in the present study was based on the clinical signs, morphology, and texture of the tumour masses in the macroscopic and microscopic examinations. In addition, histopathological and i

Atrazine (ATZ) is the second most commonly used herbicide worldwide, resulting in the pollution of water bodies and affecting the economic benefits of aquaculture. ATZ is known to cause liver damage in the common carp, Cyprinus carpio L., one of the most widely cultivated fish in China, but the underlying mechanisms are poorly understood. In this study, juvenile common carp Cyprinus carpio L. were exposed to three different environmental levels (0.4, 0.8, and 1.2 μg/L) of ATZ for 12 weeks and changes in the liver transcriptomes between the high-dose group and the control group were analyzed.
