This study aims to clarify the natural history of glenohumeral articular cartilage changes in rotator cuff disease. We assessed 33 cadaveric shoulder joints, examining the rotator cuffs for macroscopic tears and the articular surfaces for degenerative changes. Ten specimens had tears of the rotator cuff. Articular degenerative changes were noted in 23 joints. Articular cartilage degeneration was almost twice as frequent in the group with rotator cuff tears (10/10 shoulders) as in those without tears (13/23 shoulders). This difference was statistically significant. This strong correlation betwe…

The laryngeal cartilages undergo age changes, including mineralization and ossification. Keen and Wainwright defined, in male and female subjects, recognizable stages of radiopacity of the thyroid, cricoid, and arytenoid cartilages. The present study analyzed quantitatively the degree of laryngeal radiopacity to determine whether radiography of the larynx can be used routinely in forensic pathology to estimate age at death. In each of 82 subjects, the larynx was removed during forensic autopsy and subjected to radiography in an anteroposterior orientation. Each radiograph was independently sco…

Osteoarthritis (OA) is a disabling joint disease for which there is currently no cure. It is characterized by the destruction of articular cartilage. One strategy that is being explored for protecting the cartilage in OA is the administration of transforming growth factor-beta, which in vitro antagonizes cartilage degradation initiated by catabolic stimulants such as interleukin-1 (IL-1). The problems associated with selective delivery of the growth factor to chondrocytes, undesirable side-effects on joint tissues, and short biological half-life have led us to explore modalities aimed at activ…

Secondary septorhinoplasty often requires a large amount of tissue, and autogenous costal cartilage is one type of grafting material that can be used in these cases. In this study, 20 patients with severe nasal deformity received autogenous costal cartilage grafts. Nineteen of the 20 cases were revisions. Costal cartilage grafts were used for structural and nonstructural purposes in these patients. Follow-up ranged from 8 to 32 months. The complications included 1 patient with early wound infection and 3 with minor warping. There were no problems with graft resorption or extrusion. Other than …

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: The application of cartilage in tympanoplasty has been generally accepted, because cartilage as a bradytrophic tissue allows stable and functionally reliable reconstruction of the eardrum even in difficult pathological conditions (such as subtotal defects, tympanosclerosis etc.). A special surgical technique using small cartilaginous chips for the reconstruction of the eardrum has been developed by J. Heermann, who introduced it as Palisade Cartilage Tympanoplasty (PCT). Although being increasingly applied in otosurgery, this technique has to date neither been evaluat…

Different policies on the treatment of tympanic membrane perforation in the pediatric age group continue to exist. Thirty patients were included in this study over a period of 2 years, where cartilage perichondrium composite graft (CPCG) was used to close the tympanic membrane perforation. Successful drum closure was achieved in 86.6% of cases, regardless of the site of perforation or the status of the operated ear. The graft was taken from the tragus and was placed in an underlay fashion with cartilage towards the promontory and the perichondrium immediately to the tympanic membrane remnants.…

Cartilage-hair hypoplasia is a chondrodysplasia with a high incidence of Hirschsprung disease. This study suggests that Hirschsprung disease is associated especially with severe cartilage-hair hypoplasia: the patients with Hirschsprung disease had severe growth failure and a higher incidence of alopecia, infections, malignancies, and childhood anemia than the patients with cartilage-hair hypoplasia who did not have Hirschsprung disease.

OBJECTIVES/HYPOTHESIS: Multiple techniques of ossicular reconstruction have been advocated for hearing rehabilitation in the setting of chronic otitis media No single method can adequately address the clinical spectrum of disease severity. In the situation of a severely diseased ear requiring a canal wall down (CWD) mastoidectomy in the presence of an intact stapes superstructure, the authors have employed a double cartilage block (DCB) ossiculoplasty. The technique and short-term results are reviewed.
STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective chart review in a tertiary referral otologic practice.

Joint cartilage is a dynamic tissue that reacts to trauma, inflammation, and other insults by attempting to repair its matrix. This reaction results in the release of cartilage macromolecules into the body fluids. Analysis of these fluids has identified a limited number of at least somewhat tissue-specific markers of altered cartilage metabolism. Analyses of serum are less specific and less sensitive than analyses of synovial fluid, but their use as research tools in clinical studies, drug development, and experimental work in animal models is increasing.

Total or subtotal reconstruction of the tympanic membrane with cartilage palisades counteracts the tendency to retraction observed in ears with functional problems of the tube or altered gas exchange of the mucosa, in contrast with "soft" autologous materials such as temporal fascia or perichondrium. Because of its low turnover, cartilage is more resistant to the prolonged absence of neovascularization from the periphery in (sub) total perforation making it more resistant to infection. However, the use of palisade cartilage has been questioned for the functional recuperation of the middle ear …

The aim of this study was to provide a histomorphological analysis of some secondary cartilages of mandible and temporal bone as observed in human fetuses 18-22 weeks old. The behavior of cartilage was studied in both these regions, which were decalcified, cut at 10 mu, stained with Mallory staining and examined by optical microscopy. In mandible symphysis menti and condylar cartilage were described. The symphysis appeared to be formed by a fibrous cartilagineous structure surrounded by membranous bone. This structure seems be round in the caudal sections and ovoidal in the rostral sections wi…

PURPOSE: To determine the spatial variation of in vivo cartilage T2 in young asymptomatic adults.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Quantitative T2 maps of seven asymptomatic young male adults and one male volunteer with a history of previous intraarticular chondroid fragments were calculated by using a multiecho, spin-echo magnetic resonance imaging sequence at 3.0 T. The T2 maps were bilinearly interpolated to generate T2 profiles across the thickness of cartilage.
RESULTS: All seven asymptomatic volunteers demonstrated a monotonic increase in T2, which increased from 32 msec +/- 1 in the deep radial…

Use of costal cartilage in middle ear surgery. Tympanic membrane retraction often occurs in otologic pathology. In an effort to reduce this pathology, the surgical procedure considered incorporates the use of a new material which diminishes retraction and allows freer movement of the eardrum. Since 1991, we have been using costal cartilage allograft obtained from donors and treated to prevent disease transmission. The allografts were used for tympanoplasty, retraction pockets and attic reconstruction. More than 150 patients were treated and the results evaluated in order to determine the indic…

The aim of this study was to localise alkaline phosphatase (ALP) activity in equine growth cartilage both histochemically and ultrastructurally. For histochemical studies, full thickness growth cartilage samples were obtained from 6 anatomical sites from 16 horses and ponies ranging in age from 90 d postconception to 12 years of age. For ultrastructural studies, samples were obtained from the lateral trochlear ridge of the distal femur of 3 animals ranging in age from 157 d postconception to 12 months of age. Alkaline phosphatase in histological sections was localised using a substituted napht…

Localized amyloid deposition is known to occur commonly in the articular cartilage of elderly patients. Its pathogenesis is uncertain and it is not known if other cartilage-containing tissues also contain amyloid deposits. Systemic amyloid deposits are known to contain highly sulphated glycosaminoglycans, a major constituent of cartilage. As the composition of articular cartilage glycosaminoglycans is known to change with age, we sought to identify whether localized amyloid deposition in cartilage was glycosaminoglycan-related. We examined specimens of articular cartilage over a wide age range…

A study was undertaken of 14 autopsy cases with pigmented rib cartilage. Twelve of these patients had been treated with levodopa because of Parkinson's disease for at least 6 years, and two had been treated with methyldopa because of essential hypertension for 19 years. Thirty-two percent of the autopsy cases of Parkinson's disease during a recent 70-month period demonstrated pigmented rib cartilage. Only one of them also demonstrated pigmentation of intervertebral disks. No abnormal pigmentation was seen in other sites. The pigment was located in the hyaline matrix of rib cartilage and in nec…

Repeated intraarticular injections of transforming growth factor beta cause stimulation of articular cartilage proteoglycan synthesis, influx of inflammatory cells, fibrosis and osteophyte formation. When injected together with interleukin-1, TGF-beta enhances IL-1 induced cell-attraction in a synergistic way, while it counteracts IL-1 induced suppression of cartilage PG synthesis.
