OBJECTIVES: To analyze if socioeconomic characteristics as lower education and lower family income are associated factors with the combination of pain catastrophizing and kinesiophobia in patients with knee osteoarthritis (KOA).
METHODS: This cross-sectional study included 140 participants aged 40 years or older with KOA grades II and III. Based on the Pain Catastrophizing Scale (PCS) and the Tampa Scale of Kinesiophobia (TSK), four groups were identified: non-catastrophic/non-kinesiophobic (NC/NK), non-catastrophic/non-kinesiophobic (NC/K), catastrophic/non-kinesiophobic (C/NK), and catastro

BACKGROUND: The non-motor symptoms of Parkinson's disease (PD), pain, depression, anxiety and sleep disturbances are highly prevalent in persons with PD and have a profound impact on their quality of life (QOL). Catastrophizing is a negative coping style known to influence individuals' ability to cope with their medical symptoms and contributes to negative health-related outcomes, yet, it has not been studied in persons with PD.
OBJECTIVE: The objectives of this study were to measure catastrophizing in PD and explore its role as a mediator of the relationship between non-motor symptoms and QO

A case of Nicolau syndrome (NS) in a 36-year-old adult taking an unusual and devastating hyperacute irreversible paraplegia after an intramuscular injection of benzathine penicillin as a part of routine chemoprophylaxis of her rheumatic heart disease is reported. Although this syndrome is a considerably rare, iatrogenic and underappreciated dermatologic entity, we reiterate in this report, its extracutaneous systemic potential for a catastrophic neurovascular phenomenon and morbidity as well as its possible preventive measures. The apoplectiform onset of T10 flaccid areflexic paraplegia, with

OBJECTIVE: Fatigue is a prevalent and long-lasting symptom among patients with cancer that is known to be worsened by patients' catastrophizing thoughts about their fatigue. Spouses are also burdened by patient fatigue, which may lead them to catastrophize as well. Based on the dyadic coping literature, this study hypothesized that patient and spouse catastrophizing translate into worse fatigue through co-rumination-couples' communications dwelling on the negative aspects of fatigue (H1). While maladaptive for fatigue, co-rumination also was expected to foster couple relationship satisfaction

Antiphospholipid syndrome (APS) is an autoantibody-mediated acquired thrombophilia characterized by venous and/or arterial thromboses, pregnancy morbidity (predominantly repeated fetal losses), and the presence of phospholipid antibodies. The estimated annual incidence of APS is 5 new cases per 100,000 people. The most common thrombotic events in patients with APS in order of frequency are stroke, transient ischemic attack, deep vein thrombosis, and pulmonary embolism. Patients with APS may develop an intracardiac thrombus, which is a life-threatening complication with a high risk of increased

Catastrophic thrombosis is a rare but frequently fatal event following complex cardiac surgery. It is most often encountered following separation from cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) and reversal of heparin anticoagulation, and somewhat paradoxically, at the time when bleeding from post-CPB coagulopathy is being treated. We report the case of a 41-year-old female taken to the operating room for repair of an expanding ascending aortic pseudoaneurysm. Following a prolonged operation, she developed intracardiac thrombus during transfusion of hemostatic blood products and procoagulant agents. Potenti

BACKGROUND: As the drive towards universal coverage is gaining momentum globally, the need for assessing levels of financial health protection in countries, particularity the developing world, has increasingly become important. In Swaziland, the level of financial health protection is not clearly understood.
OBJECTIVE: To assess financial catastrophe and impoverishment from out-of-pocket payments for health services in Swaziland.
METHODS: The nationally representative Swaziland Household Income and Expenditure Survey (2009/2010) dataset is used for the analyses. Data are collected by the Cen

BACKGROUND: There is high reliance on out-of-pocket (OOP) health payments as a means of financing health system in Nigeria. OOP health payments can make households face catastrophe and become impoverished. The study aims to examine the financial burden of OOP health payments among households in Nigeria.
METHODS: Secondary data from the Harmonized Nigeria Living Standard Survey (HNLSS) of 2009/2010 was utilized to assess the catastrophic and impoverishing effects of OOP health payments on households in Nigeria. Data analysis was carried out using ADePT 6.0 and STATA 12.
RESULTS: We found that

BACKGROUND: Chronic pain patients are frequently treated with opioid medications in primary care, where brief measures of risk for opioid misuse have great utility. Catastrophic thinking is a clinically relevant and potentially modifiable factor associated with several chronic pain outcomes, including risk for opioid misuse. This study examined the utility of a single-item measure of pain-related catastrophizing in predicting risk of opioid misuse.
METHOD: 119 chronic pain patients completed the Coping Strategies Questionnaire catastrophizing item, Pain Catastrophizing Scale (PCS), and Screen

BACKGROUND: Pain catastrophizing has been suggested as a prospective risk factor for poor postoperative pain outcomes in total joint arthroplasty (TJA). However, results from the previous studies have been mixed and have not controlled for postoperative opiate analgesic intake. This study investigates pain catastrophizing and postoperative pain intensity in TJA patients, adjusting for analgesic intake. We hypothesized that "pain catastrophizers" would exhibit higher pain scores and increased analgesic requirements postoperatively.
METHODS: In this prospective cohort study, patients were defin

BACKGROUND: Biotin-thiamine-responsive basal ganglia disease (BTBGD) is an autosomal recessive neurometabolic disorder caused by mutations in the SLC19A3 gene. The disease is characterized by subacute encephalopathy with confusion, dysphagia, dysarthria, and seizures.
METHODS: We diagnosed a family affected by BTBGD and studied them including prognosis of cases when diagnosed and treated early in the disease process. We also review the literature comprehensively and summarize all published data about this disorder.
RESULTS: Since its first description, a total of 89 cases (46 females and 43

Extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) is an accepted treatment modality for life support refractory to conventional efforts in neonates with complex congenital heart lesions. Cannulation for ECMO can be accomplished by venovenous (VV) access where patients receive primarily respiratory support or venoarterial (VA) access which provides complete cardiopulmonary support. VV ECMO delivered by a single-vessel cannulation with a dual-chamber venous cannula allows for respiratory support while the patient remains dependent upon intrinsic cardiac function to support hemodynamics. We present a ca

Iron-dependent oxidative DNA damage in vivo by hydrogen peroxide (H2O2, HP) induces copious single-strand(ss)-breaks and base modifications. HP also causes infrequent double-strand DNA breaks, whose relationship to the cell killing is unclear. Since hydrogen peroxide only fragments chromosomes in growing cells, these double-strand breaks were thought to represent replication forks collapsed at direct or excision ss-breaks and to be fully reparable. We have recently reported that hydrogen peroxide kills Escherichia coli by inducing catastrophic chromosome fragmentation, while cyanide (CN) poten

We report an outbreak of acute viral hepatitis among children in a flood rescue camp at Rudraprayag district of Uttarakhand State, India. In May 2013, there was a disastrous natural calamity, The Himalayan Tsunami in Himalayan and Sub-Himalayan region of Uttarakhand. More than 5700 people were feared dead, and thousands were sheltered in different rescue camps. A linkage was hypothesised between the infected individuals and the common water sources feared of being contaminated faecally. Aetiological agent of the present outbreak was HAV that is emerging in an outbreak form in India, emphasizin

Eukaryotic cells are targeted by pathogenic viruses and have developed cell defense mechanisms against viral infection. In yeast, the cellular extrachromosomal genetic element [KIL-d] alters killer activity of M double-stranded RNA killer virus and confers cell resistance against the killer virus. However, its underlying mechanism and the molecular nature of [KIL-d] are unknown. Here, we demonstrate that [KIL-d] is a proteinaceous prion-like aggregate with non-Mendelian cytoplasmic transmission. Deep sequencing analyses revealed that [KIL-d] selectively increases the rate of de novo mutation i

We report a case of an 87-year-old female who underwent percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) for non-ST elevation myocardial infarction while she was being worked up for transcatheter aortic valve procedure. Hemodynamic compromise occurred during the PCI, which could only be mitigated by doing a balloon aortic valvuloplasty and Impella™ insertion. This case report will help in preparedness for any untoward events in patients with aortic stenosis and undergoing percutaneous coronary intervention.
