Bilateral striatal lesion is characterised by a specific clinical syndrome (encephalopathy with rigidity, irritability, variable pyramidal, and extrapyramidal symptoms, speech abnormalities) and symmetrical lesion of the basal ganglia including the caudate nucleus, the putamen, and occasionally other nuclei. We report three cases in whom bilateral striatal lesion developed in association with varicella. Each patient recovered completely and showed no signs of cognitive deficiency, chorea or hyperkinetic syndrome, all of which have been reported as sequelae of BSL associated with other conditio…

Although nigrostriatal dopaminergic dysfunction has been suggested in early onset primary torsion dystonia (PTD) with the DYT1 mutation, the actual status of brain dopamine (DA) is unknown. In a DYT1 mutation-positive autopsy patient with PTD, we found that nigral cellularity was normal and that subregional striatal DA levels were within the control range, except for those in the rostral portions of the putamen and caudate nucleus (50% to 54% of control means). Our data suggest that the DYT1 mutation is not associated with significant damage to the nigrostriatal DA system, in keeping with the …

The surgical management of two cases of lateral ventricular subependymal giant cell astrocytoma, arising in the head of the Caudate nucleus, and causing hydrocephalus due to obstruction of the foramen of Monro is described. One lesion, in a patient with tuberous sclerosis, was resected using a transcallosal approach and the other, in a patient with no stigmata of tuberous sclerosis, using a frontal, trans-cortical transcystoventricular approach. The microsurgical aspects of excision and pathological anatomy of both tumours were very similar. Following tumour excision and pellucidotomy both pat…

Stereotaxic injection of SCH 23390 (D-1 antagonist), but not water or ritanserin (5-HT antagonist), into all parts of the caudate-putamen, elicited an immediate and often long-lasting catalepsy in 79% of rats. Similar results were obtained with SCH 23390 delivered into the nucleus accumbens and globus pallidus, but not into a variety of other brain sites. The results support the idea that SCH 23390-induced catalepsy is related to the occlusion of dopamine D-1 receptors in the forebrain, particularly the striatum, although the topography of the catalepsy evoked by intrastriatal SCH 23390 did no

A 24-year-old woman with an unresectable right mesencephalic pilocytic astrocytoma was treated with stereotaxic radiation therapy. Three months after a radiation therapy-induced bleeding, she presented a severe disabling low frequency rest and kinetic tremor involving the left upper limb, associated with dystonia, and a Holmes tremor was suspected. Thereby, we performed a I-FP-CIT SPECT (DATSCAN) that revealed a normal distribution of radiotracer over the left striatum, whereas no binding was seen in the right caudate and putamen. This pattern was consistent with a right severe nigrostriatal d

Clinical diagnosis of sporadic CJD is usually confirmed by a typical EEG pattern and an increased level of protein 14-3-3 in the CSF, with specificity of 74% and 84%, respectively. However, both these tests are often negative in vCJD patients. Recently MR imaging has substantially improved the diagnosis of sCJD and vCJD. In sCJD patients hyperintense signal in T2-weighted sequences was found to be present in the neostriatum (the caudate nucleus and putamen) with specificity of 93%, while in vCJD cases signal hyperintensity was found in pulvinar thalami. The "pulvinar sign" was evidenced to be …

By tracing radioactively labeled proteins transported by axonal flow, projections from area 4 to the ipsi- and contralateral neostriatum and claustrum were demonstrated in 7 monkeys. A reversed topographic organization was found on both sides for the corticoneostriatal and corticoclaustral projections. The most extensive terminal field could be observed in the putamen. In contrast, very few area 4 efferents seemed to terminate in the caudate nucleus. This suggests differential functions for the two striatal components in sensorimotor mechanisms. These unexpected results give further evidence f…

Suicide is the second leading cause of death in youth, and depression is a strong proximal predictor of adolescent suicide. It is important to identify psychological factors that may protect against suicide ideation in depressed adolescents. Self-compassion may be such a factor. Converging evidence indicates the inverse association between self-compassion and suicide ideation, but the neural mechanisms underlying their link remain unknown. Because self-referential caudate activity is associated with both self-compassion and suicide ideation, its functional connectivity might explain their rela

In this study, we report on a patient who developed apathy resulting from injury to the prefrontocaudate tract following mild traumatic brain injury (TBI), which was observed on diffusion tensor tractography (DTT). A 46-year-old female patient was involved in a bus accident. Her history included intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH) in the left putamen 4 years ago before the head trauma, and her family reported that she had fully recovered. She developed apathy after the TBI, worsening over time. Decreased neural connectivity of the left caudate nucleus (CN) to the left upper medial prefrontal cortex…

INTRODUCTION: Varicella in childhood is a self-limiting disease which usually follows a benign course. However, a considerable number of complications occur, particularly involving the nervous system. On rare occasions hemiparesis has been reported following an ischemic cerebrovascular accident related to varicella.
CLINICAL CASE: We report the case of a 4 year old boy who presented with right hemiparesis eight days after the onset of varicella. CAT and MR showed a cerebral infarct involving the left caudate nucleus, putamen and internal capsule. Other possible causes of cerebral infarct were…

Two patients with biopsy-proven Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease had MRI studies that revealed increased signal in the basal ganglia on T-2 weighted images, suggesting that MRI can be a useful diagnostic instrument in Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease.

The history of a 67-year-old woman with histologically proven Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (CJD) is presented. Before typical clinical and neurophysiological signs of CJD developed, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) showed slightly enhanced signal intensity of the caudate nuclei and putamina in T2-weighted and proton density images, corresponding to spongiform degeneration in neuropathological examination. Five weeks later characteristical progressive cortical atrophy was demonstrated by follow-up MRI.

The case is reported of a 64-year-old woman with ataxia and dementia progressing to a state of extrapyramidal rigidity and death in 10 months. The neuropathological changes characterised by severe nerve cell degeneration and loss, a hypertrophic astrocytic gliosis and a status spongiosus were widespread in the cerebral cortex, corpus striatum and cerebellum and confirmed the clinical diagnosis of Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease.

1. Significantly reduced values of noradrenaline in Parkinson's disease were observable in all brain areas which were studied. 2. A topographic distribution of free 3-methoxy-4-hydroxyphenylglycol (MHPG) can be demonstrated in the human brain. As MHPG in the various brain areas shows a different pattern of concentration it seems that this metabolite of noradrenaline is of physiological significance and is able to reflect noradrenaline turnover. The highest values of free MHPG were found in the hypothalamus, n. accumbens, thalamus and n. ruber. 3. In a limited series of patients with Parkinson'

Quantitative susceptibility mapping (QSM) quantifies tissue magnetic susceptibility from gradient-echo phase data and is increasingly used to assess brain iron content. Although QSM has been validated from 1.5 T to 9.4 T, its multicenter performance at 5 T has not been evaluated. Six healthy volunteers (3 men, 3 women; mean age 29 ± 4 years) underwent brain QSM as a traveling-subject cohort across six 5 T MRI systems at different institutions, with a 3 T system as the clinical reference. Three-dimensional multi-echo gradient-echo data were acquired using standardized protocols, and QSM maps we
