[Bruises in infants should always be accounted for].

Haematomas were observed in three male infants under 1 year of age. In the first case, no suspicion regarding child abuse was raised, but, in retrospect, the appearance of haematomas coincided with the times he had been with a childminder. When he was admitted to hospital for a different reason, namely a serious airway infection, the causal relationship could no longer be established. In the second case, the grandparents told the general practitioner about their suspicion of maltreatment. CT revealed inflicted traumatic brain injury. In the third case, inflicted traumatic brain injury was also

Managing constipation in children with ASD - A challenge worth tackling.

Autism Spectrum disorder (ASD) is well known to be associated with significantly high rates of gastrointestinal problems, constipation being common among them, imposing a significant burden on child and the family. On account of multiple underlying factors, both diagnosis and subsequent management of constipation in children with ASD are much more challenging as compared to managing constipation in 'neurotypical' children. Associated higher rate of presentation to the hospital emergency and subsequent hospital admission rates add to the burden. Hence, there is a need for recognizing constipati

Acute necrotizing encephalopathy associated with lymphoma-associated hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis: A case report and literature review.

Damage associated with lymphoma-associated hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis (LA-HLH) to the central nervous system (CNS) is not uncommon. However, the combination with brain damage resembling acute necrotizing encephalopathy (ANE) is rarely reported. Herein, we introduce the diagnosis and treatment of a case of ANE associated with LA-HLH in our hospital and review the relevant literature. After treatment, the child was discharged with only dysarthria and decreased sucking ability. The child is now discharged from the hospital for 6 months with regular follow-up. There were no disease recurre

The likelihood of injuries when children fall out of bed.

Between 1980 and 1985, 76 children from birth to 16 years of age were reported to have fallen out of a bed, crib, or chair while in our hospital; 75% of the incidents occurred in children from birth to 5 years of age. The height of falls ranged from 1 to 3 ft. Most of the injuries were minor (scalp hematoma and facial lacerations). Our data indicate that severe head, neck, spine, and extremity injuries are extremely rare when children fall out of hospital beds. Child abuse should be suspected and ruled out when a child is seen with severe injury from a reported "fall at home."

Accuracy of Self-report as a Method of Screening for Lifetime Occurrence of Traumatic Brain Injury Events that Resulted in Hospitalization.

BACKGROUND: Traumatic brain injury (TBI) occurs frequently during child and early adulthood, and is associated with negative outcomes including increased risk of drug abuse, mental health disorders and criminal offending. Identification of previous TBI for at-risk populations in clinical settings often relies on self-report, despite little information regarding self-report accuracy. This study examines the accuracy of adult self-report of hospitalized TBI events and the factors that enhance recall. METHODS: The Christchurch Health and Development Study is a birth cohort of 1265 children born

Cerebral salt wasting in pediatric critical care; not just a neurosurgical disorder anymore.

OBJECTIVE: Cerebral salt-wasting syndrome (CSWS) is a hypovolemic hyponatremia caused by natriuresis and diuresis, of which the exact pathogenesis is unknown. Although CSWS has been more commonly described to be associated with neurosurgical disorders, increasing numbers of patients are diagnosed and new etiological factors are being identified as the awareness of it increases. METHODS: The files of the patients who had been hospitalized and treated with the diagnosis of CSWS at the pediatric critical care unit during the last three years were retrospectively reviewed. RESULTS: Totally 9 pat

Prevalence and clinical aspects of human bocavirus infection in children.

Human bocavirus (HBoV) was recently described as a new member of the Parvoviridae. In order to investigate the suggested association of HBoV with respiratory and gastric disease in infants and young children, sera of 357 paediatric patients hospitalized with infectious and non-infectious diseases were retrospectively analyzed for the presence of HBoV DNA and virus-specific antibodies using quantitative PCR and ELISA, respectively. HBoV seroprevalence was determined to range from 25% in infants younger than 1 year of age to 93% in children aged more than 3 years. Viral loads between 1 x 10(2) a
