Bat Tongues and Foraging: Linking Morphology to Hunting Strategies.

On their dorsal surface, bat tongues show a raised muscular structure called mediodorsal lobe (MDL) or lingual prominence. It exhibits different mechanical papillae across species, which we hypothesized are linked to foraging strategies. We predicted that tall MDLs and prominent papillae pointing frontward would effectively trap prey items caught on the wing by aerial hawkers. We examined 904 high-resolution, close-up images of 239 individual bats from 24 European species, focusing on MDL height and morphology and arrangement of MDL papillae. Aerial hawkers such as Tadarida teniotis, Nyctalus

Cellular and immune adaptations at the maternal-fetal interface in bats.

Bats experience extreme physiological conditions rarely encountered by other mammals, including prolonged gestation relative to other small species, high metabolic demands, temperature fluctuations during flight, and continual microbial exposure. These traits make them a powerful model for understanding placental adaptation during pregnancy. Here, we define the cellular and molecular architecture of the Jamaican fruit bat (Artibeus jamaicensis) placenta using single-nucleus RNA sequencing and tissue-derived organoid models. This analysis reveals diverse trophoblast, stromal, and immune populat

Cross-neutralising antibodies to SARS-CoV-2 in sera from straw-coloured fruit bats (Eidolon helvum) in Nigeria.

BACKGROUND: Straw-coloured fruit bats (Eidolon helvum; ) are widely distributed in Africa and are known reservoirs for viruses with zoonotic potential. These bats are widely hunted in West and Central Africa for human consumption as food source and medicine. This practice increases the potential for spillover of zoonotic disease to the human population. This study investigated the presence of neutralising antibodies against SARS-CoV-2 variants in serum samples (n = 142) from E. helvum bats captured between November 2017 and March 2019 in Makurdi, Nigeria. Faecal samples (n = 120) from the roos

Preliminary Detection of Bats-associated Influenza A virus from Pakistan.

The emergence of zoonotic infections in humans is intensifying the need for awareness of the viruses circulating in animals that can cross the species barrier. Among these are the group of influenza viruses causing seasonal outbreaks and epidemics in humans and animals. As compared to the familiar human and avian influenza viruses, bat influenza viruses are relatively unknown. This study is the first to detect influenza A viruses from bats in Pakistan, which is an important step to improve knowledge about zoonotic diseases. About 22.3% of IAVs (influenza A virus) were present in bats of divers

Role of individual and population heterogeneity in shaping dynamics of multi-pathogen shedding in an island endemic bat.

Understanding processes driving pathogen transmission in bats is critical to prevent spillovers and emergence events. Although substantial research has addressed this topic, few studies have directly examined shedding dynamics (as opposed to serological studies) and co-infection patterns using fine-scale spatio-temporal datasets. Here, based on the monitoring of 5,714 Reunion free-tailed bats (Mormopterus francoismoutoui) in 17 roosts over 24 months, we studied the co-shedding dynamics of paramyxoviruses (PMV) and Leptospira bacteria (LEPTO) in urine, and herpesviruses (HSV) in saliva. We evid

Single-cell analysis of intermediate horseshoe bat (Rhinolophus affinis) organs reveals viral infections and antiviral immune signatures.

Bats are recognized for harboring a diverse array of viruses without manifesting disease symptoms. In this study, we explored the single-cell atlas of wild Rhinolophus affinis (R. affinis) using Viral-Track and identified transcript expression of eight viral species in the R. affinis lung and three viral species in the kidney. Within the R. affinis lung, these viruses were detected across all cell types except ciliated cells. Compared to uninfected cells, virus-infected cells exhibited activation of pathways associated with protein synthesis, tissue repair, and immune responses, as evidenced b

The Ebola virus - going beyond the bleeding edge.

The Ebola virus (EBV) genus is responsible for severe viral haemorrhagic illness caused by a group of viruses belonging to the Filoviridae family. Five species have been identified as causative agents for Ebola virus disease (EVD). The EBV (Zaire) strain is the most predominant organism involved in recorded EVD outbreaks and has been reported as the most virulent. EVD was first identified in the Democratic Republic of Congo in 1976 and has occurred in sporadic outbreaks over the last few decades with the most recent episode in Uganda over the period September 2022-January 2023. EVD is zoonotic

Serologic Surveillance for Orthoflaviviruses and Chikungunya Virus in Bats and Opossums in Chiapas, Mexico.

We performed serologic surveillance for selected arthropod-borne viruses (arboviruses) in bats and opossums in the Lacandona Rainforest, Chiapas, Mexico, in 2023-2024. Sera were collected from 94 bats of at least 15 species and 43 opossums of three species. The sera were assayed by the plaque reduction neutralization test (PRNT) for antibodies to eight orthoflaviviruses (dengue viruses 1-4, St. Louis encephalitis virus, T'Ho virus, West Nile virus, and Zika virus) and one alphavirus (chikungunya virus; CHIKV). Twelve (12.8%) bats and 15 (34.9%) opossums contained orthoflavivirus-specific antib

Evolutionary Diversity of Bat Rabies Virus in São Paulo State, Brazil.

The history of the rabies virus dates back four millennia, with the virus being considered by many to be the first known transmitted between animals and humans. In Brazil, rabies virus variants associated with terrestrial wild animals, marmosets, and different bat species have been identified. In this study, bat samples from different regions of São Paulo State, in Southeast Brazil, were analyzed to identify their genetic variability and patterns. A total of 51 samples were collected over ten years (1999-2009) and submitted to the immunofluorescent technique using monoclonal antibodies for ant

Selective replication and vertical transmission of Ebola virus in experimentally infected Angolan free-tailed bats.

The natural reservoir of Ebola virus (EBOV), agent of a zoonosis burdening several African countries, remains unidentified, albeit evidence points towards bats. In contrast, the ecology of the related Marburg virus is much better understood; with experimental infections of bats being instrumental for understanding reservoir-pathogen interactions. Experiments have focused on elucidating reservoir competence, infection kinetics and specifically horizontal transmission, although, vertical transmission plays a key role in many viral enzootic cycles. Herein, we investigate the permissiveness of Ang

Kenyan Free-Tailed Bats Demonstrate Seasonal Birth Pulse Asynchrony with Implications for Virus Maintenance.

Ecological information on wildlife reservoirs is fundamental for research targeting prevention of zoonotic infectious disease, yet basic information is lacking for many species in global hotspots of disease emergence. We provide the first estimates of synchronicity, magnitude, and timing of seasonal birthing in Mops condylurus, a putative ebolavirus host, and a co-roosting species, Mops pumilus (formerly Chaerephon pumilus). We show that population-level synchronicity of M. condylurus birthing is wide (~ 8.5 weeks) and even wider in M. pumilus (> 11 weeks). This is predicted to promote the lik

Investigation of Rabies virus in wild mammals of the atlantic forest in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

With the successful control of rabies transmitted by dogs in Brazil, wild animals have played a relevant epidemiological role in the transmission of rabies virus (RABV). Bats, non-human primates and wild canines are the main wild animals that transmit RABV in the country. It is worth highlighting the possibility of synanthropic action of these species, when they become adapted to urban areas, causing infections in domestic animals and eventually in humans. This work aimed to evaluate the circulation of RABV in the Pedra Branca Forest, an Atlantic Forest area, located in the state of Rio de Jan

Diversity of bartonellae in mites (Acari: Mesostigmata: Macronyssidae and Spinturnicidae) of boreal forest bats: Association of host specificity of mites and habitat selection of hosts with vector potential.

Research into various bacterial pathogens that can be transmitted between different animals and may have zoonotic potential has led to the discovery of different strains of Bartonella sp. in bats and their associated ectoparasites. Despite their enormous species diversity, only a few studies have focussed on the detection of bacterial pathogens in insectivorous bats of boreal forests and their associated Macronyssidae and Spinturnicidae mites. We collected and molecularly analysed mite samples from forest-dwelling bat species distributed all along the boreal belt of the Palearctic, from Centra

The Antimicrobial Bifunctional Camel Lactoferrin: In Silico and Molecular Dynamic Perspective.

Источник пометил публикацию как отозванную

Lactoferrin (LF) is a major natural antimicrobial agent secreted in body fluids as a natural innate immunity protein. The action and structure of LF are closely related to its iron-binding capacity with structural reporting in open and closed conformations. This study looked at how lactoferrin structures change in camel (cLF), bovine (bLF), and human (hLF) lactoferrin closed forms after iron is removed from their binding sites. Initially, the sequence comparison between cLF and the LFs of marine mammals, bats, and domestic animals was the most intriguing conclusion. Camel LF is revealed to be

Rabies, the cause of fatal encephalitis.

To describe the clinical progression and medical protocols applied in a 41 year old man who was bited by a bat three months before. The patient did not ask for medical care until acute tremor and pain in the right thoracic limb and hydro-phobia started. For a history of a wild animal bite associated with a unique clinical condition, we suspected of rabies encephalitis, confirming the diagnostic by pathology after his death. This case ocurred in Guadalajara, Jalisco, México, in April, 2022. The last case of human rabies reported in Jalisco secondary to bat bite was almost 30 years ago. As an un

Single-cell transcriptome analysis of the in vivo response to viral infection in the cave nectar bat Eonycteris spelaea.

Bats are reservoir hosts of many zoonotic viruses with pandemic potential. We utilized single-cell transcriptome sequencing (scRNA-seq) to analyze the immune response in bat lungs upon in vivo infection with a double-stranded RNA virus, Pteropine orthoreovirus PRV3M. Bat neutrophils were distinguished by high basal IDO1 expression. NK cells and T cells were the most abundant immune cells in lung tissue. Three distinct CD8+ effector T cell populations could be delineated by differential expression of KLRB1, GFRA2, and DPP4. Select NK and T clusters increased expression of genes involved in T ce

Traits, phylogeny and host cell receptors predict Ebolavirus host status among African mammals.

We explore how animal host traits, phylogenetic identity and cell receptor sequences relate to infection status and mortality from ebolaviruses. We gathered exhaustive databases of mortality from Ebolavirus after exposure and infection status based on PCR and antibody tests. We performed ridge regressions predicting mortality and infection as a function of traits, phylogenetic eigenvectors and separately host receptor sequences. We found that mortality from Ebolavirus had a strong association to life history characteristics and phylogeny. In contrast, infection status related not just to life

West Nile and Zika viruses in bats from a suburban area of Merida, Yucatan, Mexico.

Infections with viruses of the Flavivirus genus were explored in 22 bats (Artibeus jamaicensis) from Merida, Yucatan, Mexico. The detection of the viral genus was performed by RT-PCR, and infections with dengue (DENV 1-4), West Nile (WNV) and Zika (ZIKV) viruses were subsequently explored. Sequences from positive products were analysed using the BLAST algorithm to determine identity. In 7 (31.8%) and 2 (9.1%) bats, WNV and ZIKV were identified, respectively. The bioinformatic analysis showed 98%-100% coverage and identity for both viruses. Molecular evidence of WNV and ZIKV natural infection i
