Fungal phytopathogens cause severe yield loss, endangering vital crops such as cherry tomatoes. This study was undertaken to investigate and identify Bacillus species that possess broad-spectrum antifungal activity, specifically, to select a biocontrol agent against gray mold disease caused by Botrytis cinerea affecting cherry tomato, and investigating its safety features (antibiotic resistance, hemolysis, and virulence genes). Out of 82 Bacillus strains isolated from different regions in Algeria, 41 strains exhibited antifungal activity, while 28 strains demonstrated broad-spectrum activity.

Systemic lupus erythematosus is a systemic autoimmune disease characterized by the production of autoantibodies and damage to multiple organs. Glomerulonephritis, a manifestation involving glomerular deposition of immune complexes and complement components, significantly contributes to disease morbidity. Although an endosomal single-stranded RNA sensor [Toll-like receptor 7 (TLR7)] is known to drive glomerulonephritis by promoting autoantibody production in B cells, the contribution of macrophage TLR7 responses to glomerulonephritis remains poorly understood. Here, we have examined Tlr7‒/‒ NZB

Verticillium dahliae is among the most devastating fungal pathogens, causing significant economic harm to agriculture and forestry. To address this problem, researchers have focused on eliciting systemic resistance in host plants through utilizing volatile organic compounds (VOCs) produced by biological control agents. Herein, we meticulously measured the quantity of V. dahliae pathogens in plants via RTqPCR, as well as the levels of defensive enzymes and pathogenesis-related (PR) proteins within plants. Finally, the efficacy of VOCs in controlling Verticillium wilt in cotton was evaluated. Fo

The antifungal effects of Citrullus colocynthis extract (Hexane, chloroform, methanol, and water) were tested in vitro on Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. lycopersici (Sacc.) W. C. Snyder & H. N. Hans (FOL), the causal agent of Fusarium wilt. Of these, methanol and water extract at 10% showed the highest inhibition of mycelial growth of FOL by 12.32 and 23.61 mm respectively. The antifungal compounds were identified through Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy and gas chromatography-mass spectroscopy (GC-MS). The methanol extract was compatible with the biocontrol agent Trichoderma viride.

INTRODUCTION: Sustainable agriculture and meeting the world's food needs face considerable obstacles from abiotic stresses such as soil salinity and drought. This critical issue was addressed by our current study, which sought to uncover multi-trait bioinoculants from hostile ecosystems that could help mitigate salinity and drought stresses at the same time.
METHODS: The Bacillus subtilis ER-08 (BST) strain was isolated from the halotolerant plant Fagonia cretica which was collected from the Little Rann of Kachchh, India. Various biochemical and molecular approaches were applied for the detai

BACKGROUND: Neuroinflammation is a well-known feature of Alzheimer's disease (AD), and a blood-based test for estimating the levels of neuroinflammation would be expected. In this study, we examined and validated a model using blood-based biomarkers to predict the level of glial activation due to neuroinflammation, as estimated by 11C-DPA-713 positron emission tomography (PET) imaging.
METHODS: We included 15 patients with AD and 10 cognitively normal (CN) subjects. Stepwise backward deletion multiple regression analysis was used to determine the predictors of the TSPO-binding potential (BPND

Helminth neuroinfections represent serious medical conditions, but the diversity of the host-parasite interplay within the nervous tissue often remains poorly understood, partially due to the lack of laboratory models. Here, we investigated the neuroinvasion of the mouse spinal cord by Trichobilharzia regenti (Schistosomatidae). Active migration of T. regenti schistosomula through the mouse spinal cord induced motor deficits in hindlimbs but did not affect the general locomotion or working memory. Histological examination of the infected spinal cord revealed eosinophilic meningomyelitis with e

BACKGROUND: IgA nephropathy (IGAN) has a variable prognosis. Risk stratification tools are usually based on clinical parameters combined with histologic Oxford-MEST-C score. Circulating redox- and inflammation-related biomarkers may be related to histological changes in IGAN. Therefore, we studied the performance of these biomarkers in predicting the rate of GFR-loss in IGAN.
METHODS: This was an observational prospective study. Fifty-seven stable patients with IGAN were examined at baseline and after a mean observational time of 5.9 ± 1.1 years. The main outcome measure was eGFR-loss per yea

INTRODUCTION: The need for noninvasive markers of disease activity is mandatory in the assessment of Crohn's disease (CD). The most widely fecal biomarker in CD, despite several limits, is fecal calprotectin. This review aims to elucidate the role, if any, of all other fecal biomarkers, as alternative tools for assessing clinical and endoscopic disease activity, and predict capsule endoscopy findings, response to therapy, disease relapse, and postoperative recurrence. These fecal biomarkers included lactoferrin, S100A12, high mobility group box 1, neopterin, polymorphonuclear neutrophil elasta

Several studies have reported the toxicological implications of exposure to petroleum hydrocarbon fumes in animal models. There is little documentation on the effect of such exposure on oxidative stress levels and immune response. To our knowledge, no documentation of M1 polarization in macrophages in gasoline station male attendants. Therefore, this study aimed to evaluate the harmful effects of gasoline vapors in 62 male attendants (16-70 years) compared to 29 age- and sex-matched-unexposed controls. The attendants were recruited from Damietta governorate gasoline stations. Gasoline exposure

Microbial volatile organic compounds (mVOCs) have great potential in plant ecophysiology, yet the role of belowground VOCs in plant stress management remains largely obscure. Analysis of biocontrol producing VOCs into the soil allow detailed insight into their interaction with soil borne pathogens for plant disease management. A root interaction trial was set up to evaluate the effects of VOCs released from Trichoderma viride BHU-V2 on soil-inhabiting fungal pathogen and okra plant growth. VOCs released into soil by T. viride BHU-V2 inhibited the growth of collar rot pathogen, Sclerotium rolfs

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is characterized by substantial neurodegeneration, including both cortical atrophy and loss of underlying white matter fiber tracts. Understanding longitudinal alterations to white matter may provide new insights into trajectories of brain change in both healthy aging and AD, and fluid biomarkers may be particularly useful in this effort. To examine this, 151 late-middle-aged participants enriched with risk for AD with at least one lumbar puncture and two diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) scans were selected for analysis from two large observational and longitudinally fol

Glutathione (GSH) transferase (GST) is an essential enzyme in cestodes for the detoxification of xenobiotics. In Taenia solium, two GSTs (Ts25GST and Ts26GST kDa) were isolated as a fraction (SGSTF) by GSH-Sepharose-4B. Both are located on the tegument. Immunization assays with SGSTF reduced up to 90% of the parasitic load in a murine model of cysticercosis. It prompted us to investigate how SGSTF induces this protective immune response. To test it, we exposed peritoneal macrophages to SGSTF for 24 h; such exposure favored the production of IL-12, TNF, and IL-10 as well as the expression of ni
