Leukocytoclastic vasculitis associated with Chlamydia pneumoniae respiratory infection: A case report.

Leukocytoclastic vasculitis (LCV) is an immune complex-mediated small-vessel vasculitis commonly associated with infections, medications, autoimmune diseases, and malignancy. Although atypical respiratory pathogens have been linked to several extrapulmonary dermatologic manifestations, reports of LCV occurring in association with Chlamydia pneumoniae infection remain rare. We describe a case of biopsy-proven LCV occurring in temporal association with C. pneumoniae respiratory infection in a 36-year-old woman who developed upper respiratory symptoms followed two weeks later by a rapidly progres

Case Report: A cluster of cases with rash associated with Chlamydia pneumoniae infection.

We report a case of clustered rashes among teenagers associated by Chlamydia pneumoniae (CP) infection. Most patients only presented with rashes without significant fever or other respiratory tract symptoms. Metagenomic next-generation sequencing (mNGS) of blood samples identified the culprit - the nucleic acid sequence of CP was detected in the peripheral blood of the index case. The results of targeted next-generation sequencing (t-NGS) of throat swabs further supported the presence of CP. After antibiotic treatment, the patients' conditions improved. In this case, we should have a systemati

Synergism on Cancer Development of Human Papillomavirus and Chlamydia Trachomatis Co-Infection.

Human papillomavirus (HPV) and Chlamydia trachomatis (CT) co-infection is increasingly recognized not as a mere coincidence, but as a synergistic partnership that accelerates oncogenic progression across multiple tissues. This review synthesizes existing evidence into a "central-peripheral" framework, positioning cervical cancer as the central, mechanistically well-established model of cooperation, while malignancies such as head and neck, ovarian, and breast cancers represent the emerging, though less substantiated, peripheral extensions. This synthesis delineates an emerging paradigm of bidi

Seroprevalence of Chlamydia abortus infection in Tibetan sheep in Qinghai Province, China.

Chlamydia abortus (C. abortus) is an obligate intracellular, Gram-negative bacterium, causing ovine enzootic abortion (OEA). No data about C. abortus infection are available in Tibetan sheep in Qinghai, China. A total of 1043 Tibetan sheep serum samples were collected from 8 regions in Qinghai, China, and for specific antibodies against C. abortus using a commercial ELISA Kit. The results showed that the overall seroprevalence of C. abortus in Tibetan sheep was 153/1043 (14.7 %, 95 % confidence interval [CI] 12.5-16.8). The prevalence in female and male Tibetan sheep was 58/421 (13.8 %, 95 % C

Chlamydia trachomatis exploits sphingolipid metabolic pathways during infection of phagocytes.

Chlamydiae are obligate intracellular pathogens that utilize host cell metabolites for catabolic and anabolic processes. The bacteria replicate in epithelial cells from which they take up sphingolipids (SL) and incorporate them into the chlamydial membrane and the vacuole (termed inclusion). SL uptake is essential for Chlamydia trachomatis (Ctr) in epithelial cells; however, they can also infect phagocytes, but the consequences for the SL metabolism have not yet been investigated in these cells. We performed a quantitative sphingolipidome analysis of infected primary neutrophils, macrophages,

Role of IFN-γ from Different Immune Cells in Chlamydia Infection.

Chlamydia invades multiple mucosal tissues in humans and animals. The body's first line of defense against chlamydial infection is provided by innate immunity, whereas adaptive immunity plays a crucial role in managing the infection's progression and preparing the immune system to combat reinfection. Host resistance to chlamydial infection necessitates a coordinated effort between innate and adaptive immune cells. Numerous cell types are capable of producing interferon gamma (IFN-γ) as a defense mechanism against chlamydial infection, thereby effectively mediating the clearance of infection. H

Chlamydia muridarum Infection Impacts Murine Models of Intestinal Inflammation and Cancer.

Chlamydia muridarum has reemerged as a prevalent infectious agent in research mouse colonies. Despite its prevalence and ability to persistently colonize the murine gastrointestinal tract, few studies have evaluated the potential impact of C. muridarum on experimental models of gastrointestinal disease. Studies were conducted to evaluate the impact of C. muridarum on the Citrobacter rodentium, Trichuris muris, and Il10-/- mouse models of intestinal inflammation, as well as on tumorigenesis in the ApcMin/+ mouse following administration of dextran sodium sulfate (DSS). Chlamydia pecorum Infection Associated with Ocular Disease in Goats in Alabama, USA.

A herd of approximately 300 Spanish meat goats in central Alabama experienced sporadic ocular, respiratory, and reproductive diseases over two years, prompting diagnostic investigation at Auburn University's JT Vaughan Large Animal Teaching Hospital. Five representative doelings exhibiting ocular lesions were examined. Clinical signs included conjunctivitis, corneal opacity, uveitis, and, in one severe case, systemic illness. Initial treatment with topical and systemic antibiotics provided incomplete resolution, raising suspicion of infectious keratoconjunctivitis of atypical etiology. Compreh

Chlamydia trachomatis induces disassembly of the primary cilium to promote the intracellular infection.

Chlamydia trachomatis is a clinically important bacterium that infects epithelial cells of the genitourinary and respiratory tracts and the eye. These differentiated cells are in a quiescent growth state and have a surface organelle called a primary cilium, but the standard Chlamydia cell culture infection model uses cycling cells that lack primary cilia. To investigate if these differences are relevant, we performed infections with host cells that have a primary cilium. We found that C. trachomatis caused progressive loss of the primary cilium that was prevented by disrupting Aurora A (AurA),

Prevalence of chlamydiae in dairy cattle herds and factors contributing to the spread of infections.

INTRODUCTION: Different Chlamydia species affect cattle and contribute to economic losses. One of them, C. pecorum, is a globally endemic livestock pathogen. Despite its endemicity, prevalence data from Poland have so far been limited. The present study aimed to obtain insight into the chlamydiae prevalence in Polish dairy cattle. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A screening of chlamydial seroprevalence in dairy cattle was initially performed, followed by Chlamydiaceae- and species-specific real-time qPCR. Vaginal swabs (n = 239) and placenta samples (n = 2) from seropositive animals in 142 herds were c

Genital tract microbiome dynamics are associated with time of Chlamydia infection in mice.

We have previously shown that the time of Chlamydia infection was crucial in determining the chlamydial infectivity and pathogenesis. This study aims to determine whether the time of Chlamydia infection affects the genital tract microbiome. This study analyzed mice vaginal, uterine, and ovary/oviduct microbiome with and without Chlamydia infection. The mice were infected with Chlamydia at either 10:00 am (ZT3) or 10:00 pm (ZT15). The results showed that mice infected at ZT3 had higher Chlamydia infectivity than those infected at ZT15. There was more variation in the compositional complexity of

In Silico Identification and Validation of Pyroptosis-Related Genes in Chlamydia Respiratory Infection.

The incidence of Chlamydia trachomatis respiratory infection is increasing, and its pathogenesis is still unclear. Pyroptosis, as a mode of inflammatory cell death, plays a vital role in the occurrence and development of Chlamydia trachomatis respiratory infection. In this study, the potential pyroptosis-related genes involved in Chlamydia trachomatis respiratory infection were identified by constructing a mouse model of C. muridarum infection combined with bioinformatics analysis. Through in-depth analysis of the RNA sequencing data, 13 differentially expressed pyroptosis-related genes were s

Lactobacillus Modulates Chlamydia Infectivity and Genital Tract Pathology in vitro and in vivo.

Since we previously reported that women infected with chlamydia had a significant overall reduction in Lactobacillus in the vagina microbiota as compared to those uninfected individuals; the interactions between the altered Lactobacillus and Chlamydia trachomatis, on the other hand, need to be elucidated. Here, we employed both in vitro and in vivo models to evaluate the effects of this changed Lactobacillus on Chlamydia infection. We found that L. iners, L. crispatus, L. jensenii, L. salivarius, L. gasseri, L. mucosae, and L. reuteri all significantly reduced C. trachomatis infection in a dos
