1. The regulation of cerebrospinal fluid (c.s.f.) potassium concentration was studied using the cat choroid plexus isolated in a chamber in situ. 2. Hyperkalaemia (plasma potassium concentration greater than 6 m-equiv/l.) caused relatively small increases in c.s.f. potassium concentration. 3. Alterations in c.s.f. potassium concentration (c.s.f. K = 0-15 or 6-56 m-equiv/l.) were countered by changes in potassium concentration of the produced fluid or in the rate of potassium transport which returned c.s.f. potassium towards normal. 4. The data indicate that potassium concentration in c.s.f. se…

A choroid plexus papilloma (CPP) removed from a child with communicating hydrocephalus was studied with the electron microscope. In addition to the usual organelles, the neoplastic epithelial cells contained polypoid microvilli, cilia, coated pinocytotic vesicles, and apical tight junctions. The basal surfaces were consistently juxtaposed to large capillaries lined by fenestrated endothelium. The fine structural details of the tumor were essentially the same as those of normal CP and thus appeared ideally suited for an active secretory function. Two additional features in this tumor were tubul…

PURPOSE: To describe the multimodal imaging characteristics and clinical associations of choroidal synphlebia, a newly recognized configuration of the choroidal venous system.
METHODS: This retrospective study analyzed patients imaged with the DREAM swept-source OCT system (Intalight, San Jose, CA), capable of deep choroidal penetration. Choroidal synphlebia was defined as a confluent vascular structure ≥750 µ m in smallest lateral or vertical dimension. The multimodal imaging characteristics were evaluated.
RESULTS: Nineteen eyes of 16 patients (mean age 63.2 years; eight male) were identif…

PURPOSE: To describe the clinical presentation, multimodal imaging findings, and management of patients with choroidal osteoma observed at a tertiary ophthalmic center.
METHODS: A retrospective case series of three patients (four affected eyes) diagnosed with choroidal osteoma at the Kazakh Eye Research Institute, Almaty, Kazakhstan. All patients underwent a comprehensive ophthalmic examination, including best-corrected visual acuity assessment, fundus photography, B-scan ultrasonography, optical coherence tomography (OCT), fluorescein angiography (FA), OCT angiography, and computed tomograph…

Choroidal hypopigmented lesions (CHLs) represent significant diagnostic and therapeutic challenges due to their diverse and complex etiologies, including neoplastic, infectious, and inflammatory origins. Accurately differentiating between benign lesions with good prognoses and malignant or life-threatening conditions is crucial in directing the appropriate management and avoiding unnecessary invasive interventions. We integrate the latest research and clinical guidelines on advanced multimodal imaging modalities, emphasizing their comparative diagnostic value across varied etiologies of CHLs. …

UNLABELLED: MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are short non-coding RNAs (18-25 nucleotides in length) that are important participants in the regulation of … E: This study analyzed the expression pattern of miRNA-223 and miRNA-126 in patients with localized choroidal melanoma (CM) taking into account biometric parameters in the absence of metastases.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: Blood plasma of 84 patients with M0N0 CM aged 35-86 years (mean age 63.4±1.2 years) was investigated. The basis for the diagnosis of CM was …

PURPOSE: To report a case of tubercular choroiditis that was initially treated for multifocal choroiditis.
CASE REPORT: A 54-year-old female patient diagnosed with multifocal choroiditis was referred to the clinic while undergoing treatment with systemic prednisone and methotrexate. The presenting visual acuity was 20/100 in the right eye and finger counting at 1 meter in the left eye. Further investigation by repeated tuberculin skin test and QuantiFERON-TB Gold test revealed tuberculosis as the probable cause of choroiditis. The patient was started on a four-drug antituberculosis regimen. S…

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Ocular sarcoidosis is present in 30-60% of all sarcoidosis patients. Our purpose is to increase awareness of the various presentations of ocular sarcoidosis.
METHODS: Short image-based clinical case report.
RESULTS: We report on a case of ocular sarcoidosis presenting with unilateral choroidal nodules in a middle-aged man. Sarcoid uveitis is generally bilateral and rather symmetrical. However, choroidal nodules are an exception to this rule, as they generally arise unilaterally. Choroidal nodules are highly responsive to oral corticosteroids. When left untreated, they may…
