Spatiotemporal clustering and ecological niche modeling of Varroa destructor infestations in honey bee colonies across Türkiye.

Varroa destructor is the most important ectoparasite affecting honey bee (Apis mellifera) colonies worldwide and represents a major threat to apiculture through its direct pathogenic effects and its role in the transmission of viral diseases. Despite its widespread occurrence in Türkiye, information regarding its large-scale spatial distribution and environmental determinants remains limited. This study aimed to investigate the spatiotemporal distribution patterns of V. destructor infestations across Türkiye using retrospective Space-Time Permutation Scan Statistics (SaTScan) and ecological ni

Teacher Affirmation and Adolescent Well-Being: A Multilevel Analysis of Pronoun Use, Mattering, Loneliness, Safety, and Bias-Based Bullying.

Identity-affirming teacher practices, such as using correct pronouns, may act as Identity Safety Cues for individual students and the wider school climate. Participants were 42,088 Canadian adolescents in grades 7-12 (age M = 14.6, SD = 1.8; 49.3% girls, 4.0% gender diverse, 15.1% 2SLGBTQIA+). Multilevel models tested associations among teacher pronoun use, bullying victimization (general and bias-based), and well-being (mattering, loneliness, safety). Bias-based victimization was associated with worse outcomes. School level pronoun affirmation was associated with higher well-being for the stu

Resetting tropospheric OH and CH4 lifetime with ultraviolet H2O absorption.

The decay of methyl chloroform, a banned ozone-depleting substance, has provided a clear observational metric of mean tropospheric hydroxyl radical (OH) abundance. Almost all current global chemistry models calculate about 15% too much OH and thus too rapid methane loss. Methane is a short-lived climate forcer, critical to achieving global warming targets, and this error affects our model projections of climate change. New observations of water vapor absorption in the ultraviolet region (290 to 350 nanometers) imply reductions in sunlight with key photolysis rates decreasing by 8 to 12% in the

Integration of population-level data sources into an individual-level clinical prediction model for dengue virus test positivity.

The differentiation of dengue virus (DENV) infection, a major cause of acute febrile illness in tropical regions, from other etiologies, may help prioritize laboratory testing and limit the inappropriate use of antibiotics. While traditional clinical prediction models focus on individual patient-level parameters, we hypothesize that for infectious diseases, population-level data sources may improve predictive ability. To create a clinical prediction model that integrates patient-extrinsic data for identifying DENV among febrile patients presenting to a hospital in Thailand, we fit random fores

Anxiety-related visits to Ontario physicians following September 11, 2001.

OBJECTIVE: To determine whether the climate of increased anxiety following the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, and the subsequent anthrax cases led to increased anxiety-related physician visits. METHOD: We undertook a retrospective, population-based study of all Ontario residents. We identified physician visits using Ontario's universal health care insurance program. Interventional autoregressive integrated moving average (ARIMA) time series models were used to examine the impact of the terrorist attacks and anthrax infections on the rate of anxiety-related physician visits. RESULTS

Equity and Resilience in Higher Education: An Examination of Environmental Injustices Affecting College Students from Marginalized Populations Amid Climate Crises.

As climate crises become more severe, higher education institutions face unprecedented challenges in protecting and supporting their students. This conceptual paper explores the intersection of equity and resilience in higher education, emphasizing how structural inequities increase climate-related vulnerabilities among marginalized student groups, especially low-income, first-generation, and BIPOC students. Using the Social Ecological Model and the Whole Community Approach, this paper suggests that climate resilience in higher education must go beyond traditional emergency management to inclu

Station-specific thunderstorm forecasting using climate predictors with seasonal decomposition analysis in Bangladesh's most vulnerable regions.

Thunderstorms pose significant threats to life, agriculture, and infrastructure in Bangladesh, particularly in the northeastern regions of Sylhet, Sreemangal, and Mymensingh. This study develops and rigorously evaluates localized thunderstorm frequency forecasting models for these high-risk stations using 40 years (1985-2024) of monthly data and thirty six modeling approaches encompassing classical time series (SARIMA/SARIMAX, ETS/ETSX), machine learning (ANN/ANNX, SVR/SVRX, XGBoost/XGBoostX), and deep learning (LSTM/LSTMX) architectures, applied to raw and seasonally adjusted (X-11, STL) data

A transient global warming event during Earth's penultimate icehouse.

Deep-time hyperthermal/transient warming events provide critical analogs for modern climatic warming and its impacts. However, all ancient hyperthermals documented to date have occurred under greenhouse climate states, limiting their relevance for understanding the trajectory of present-day climate change. Here, we present conodont oxygen isotope data and climate modeling for the Kasimovian-Gzhelian Thermal Maximum (KGTM) at ~304 Ma. This transient warming event is inferred to have been marked by a ~7.5 ± 1 °C rise in global mean surface temperature and an increase in atmospheric CO2 concentra

A Deep Learning Approach for Dengue Fever Prediction in Malaysia Using LSTM with Spatial Attention.

This research aims to predict dengue fever cases in Malaysia using machine learning techniques. A dataset consisting of weekly dengue cases at the state level in Malaysia from 2010 to 2016 was obtained from the Malaysia Open Data website and includes variables such as climate, geography, and demographics. Six different long short-term memory (LSTM) models were developed and compared for dengue prediction in Malaysia: LSTM, stacked LSTM (S-LSTM), LSTM with temporal attention (TA-LSTM), S-LSTM with temporal attention (STA-LSTM), LSTM with spatial attention (SA-LSTM), and S-LSTM with spatial atte

Strain variation and anomalous climate synergistically influence cholera pandemics.

BACKGROUND: Explanations for the genesis and propagation of cholera pandemics since 1817 have remained elusive. Evolutionary pathogen change is presumed to have been a dominant factor behind the 7th "El Tor" pandemic, but little is known to support this hypothesis for preceding pandemics. The role of anomalous climate in facilitating strain replacements has never been assessed. The question is of relevance to guide the understanding of infectious disease emergence today and in the context of climate change. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: We investigate the roles of climate and putative strai

Societal worries and mental disorders in the general population: insights from the Netherlands Mental Health Survey and Incidence Study (NEMESIS).

BACKGROUND: Worries about societal issues such as climate change, pandemics, geopolitical tensions, and economic instability may negatively impact mental health. However, few studies have assessed a broad range of worries within a single study, examining both individual and cumulative associations with mental disorders. METHODS: In this cross-sectional analysis of wave 2 of NEMESIS-3, a population-based study conducted in 2023-2024 (n = 4,688; age 21-78) worries about climate, COVID-19, international tensions, energy supply/prices, daily living costs, and the housing market were each assessed

[Research advances in soil microbial carbon use efficiency in response to climate change].

Soil microbial carbon use efficiency (CUE), defined as the proportion of assimilated carbon allocated to microbial growth versus maintenance, is a key parameter regulating terrestrial soil organic carbon (SOC) storage. The response of CUE to climate change and its feedbacks profoundly affect global carbon cycle and soil carbon sequestration. At present, there are substantial uncertainties regarding the mechanisms underlying the responses of CUE to climate change and the ecological consequences. We synthesized research progress on soil microbial CUE over the past 20 years. First, we clarified t

By-degree Health and Economic Impacts of Lyme Disease, Eastern and Midwestern United States.

Lyme disease (LD) is the most common vector-borne disease in the United States (U.S.). This paper assesses how climate change may influence LD incidence in the eastern and upper Midwestern U.S. and the associated economic burden. We estimated future Ixodes scapularis habitat suitability and LD incidence with a by-degree approach using variables from an ensemble of multiple climate models. We then applied estimates for present-day and projected habitat suitability for I. scapularis, present-day presence of Borrelia burgdorferi, and projected climatological variables to model reported LD inciden…

Associating Land Cover Changes with Patterns of Incidences of Climate-Sensitive Infections: An Example on Tick-Borne Diseases in the Nordic Area.

Some of the climate-sensitive infections (CSIs) affecting humans are zoonotic vector-borne diseases, such as Lyme borreliosis (BOR) and tick-borne encephalitis (TBE), mostly linked to various species of ticks as vectors. Due to climate change, the geographical distribution of tick species, their hosts, and the prevalence of pathogens are likely to change. A recent increase in human incidences of these CSIs in the Nordic regions might indicate an expansion of the range of ticks and hosts, with vegetation changes acting as potential predictors linked to habitat suitability. In this paper, we stu

Schistosoma japonicum transmission risk maps at present and under climate change in mainland China.

BACKGROUND: The South-to-North Water Diversion (SNWD) project is designed to channel fresh water from the Yangtze River north to more industrialized parts of China. An important question is whether future climate change and dispersal via the SNWD may synergistically favor a northward expansion of species involved in hosting and transmitting schistosomiasis in China, specifically the intermediate host, Oncomelania hupensis. METHODOLOGY/ PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: In this study, climate spaces occupied by the four subspecies of O. hupensis (O. h. hupensis, O. h. robertsoni, O. h. guangxiensis and O. h

Differential and enhanced response to climate forcing in diarrheal disease due to rotavirus across a megacity of the developing world.

The role of climate forcing in the population dynamics of infectious diseases has typically been revealed via retrospective analyses of incidence records aggregated across space and, in particular, over whole cities. Here, we focus on the transmission dynamics of rotavirus, the main diarrheal disease in infants and young children, within the megacity of Dhaka, Bangladesh. We identify two zones, the densely urbanized core and the more rural periphery, that respond differentially to flooding. Moreover, disease seasonality differs substantially between these regions, spanning variation comparable

Associations between green space exposure and climate anxiety among Chinese university students: the role of school-based and leisure-time physical activity, nature connectedness, and perceived stress.

BACKGROUND: Climate anxiety has become an important mental health concern among young adults, yet the pathways linking green space exposure to climate-related distress remain unclear. This study examined whether objective green space exposure was associated with climate anxiety among Chinese university students through domain-specific physical activity, nature connectedness, and perceived stress. METHODS: A cross-sectional study included 918 undergraduate students from four universities in Wuhan Province, China. Residential and campus greenness were assessed using the satellite-derived Normal
