Adolescents with closed head injuries. A report of initial cognitive deficits.

Accidents represent the leading cause of morbidity in the adolescent age group. Closed head injuries (CHI) sustained in such accidents are f … ter injury, patients with CHI performed poorer than their counterparts on measures of intelligence, cognitive flexibility, memory (particularly verbal recall), and verbal fluency. Thus, the findings indicate that adolescents who sustain CHI experience pervasive cognitive deficits immediately after injury that potentially interfere with reentry into their home, school, …

[The role of inhibition in obsessional-compulsive disorders].

INTRODUCTION: The nature of neuropsychological mechanisms underlying the clinical picture of obsessions and compulsions has not been clearly determined. A number of studies has emphasized the role of cognitive deficits, but diversity of methodology and overlapping of clinical sub-groups have not established a specific cognitive functioning of these patients. The studies carried out on executive functions have, however, helped to identify the important role that both inhibition and cognitive flexibility play in obsessive-compulsive (OC) symptoms. Most of them have found that a deficit of inhibi…

Cognitive processing deficits in reading disabilities: a prefrontal cortical hypothesis.

Much research investigating the neuropsychological underpinnings of reading disabilities has emphasized posterior brain regions. However, recent evidence indicates that prefrontal cortex may also play a role. This study investigated cognitive processes that are associated with prefrontal and posterior brain functions. Subjects were 12-year-old reading disabled and nondisabled boys. Discriminant analysis procedures indicated that measures of prefrontal functions distinguished between the two groups better than measures of posterior functions. The results suggest that reading disabled boys have

Flexible emotional regulation typology: associations with PTSD symptomology and trait resilience.

BACKGROUND: Multiple factors influence posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) risk in trauma exposed individuals. An established association exists between trait resilience and decreased PTSD distress and between emotion regulation (ER) ability/flexibility and trait resilience. Typologies in ER ability/flexibility, associated with trait resilience and PTSD experience, could explain the difference in risk. This study aimed to explore the relationship between ER ability, ER flexibility, context sensitivity, resilience, and PTSD. METHODS: Data from N = 563 trauma exposed UK residents was used in a

Cognitive rigidity and heightened attention to detail occur transdiagnostically in adolescents with eating disorders.

Cognitive inflexibility and attention to detail bias represent a promising target in eating disorder (ED) treatment. While prior research has found that adults with eating disorders exhibit significant cognitive inflexibility and heightened attention to detail, less is known about these cognitive impairments among adolescents, and across EDs transdiagnostically. To address this gap, adolescent females (N = 143) from a residential ED program with anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, or other specified feeding or eating disorder completed the Detail and Flexibility Questionnaire (DFlex) and measur

Flexible Inorganic Nanofibers: Mechanisms, Regulation Strategies, and Evaluation Methods.

Flexible inorganic nanofibers, leveraging the synergistic advantages of the inherent stability of inorganic materials and the flexible functionality conferred on the nanoscale, have demonstrated significant application potential in high-end fields such as thermal insulation, optoelectronics, catalysis, and biomedicine, emerging as a research hotspot in interdisciplinary science. However, the origin of their flexibility involves multiscale structural coupling and the synergistic action of multiple mechanisms. Existing research has yet to establish a universal theoretical system, which restricts

Pitolisant alleviates brain network dysfunction and cognitive deficits in a mouse model of Alzheimer's disease.

Histamine H3 receptor (H3R) antagonists regulate histamine release that modulates neuronal activity and cognitive function. Although H3R is elevated in Alzheimer's disease (AD) patients, whether H3R antagonists can rescue AD-associated neural impairments and cognitive deficits remains unknown. Pitolisant is a clinically approved H3R antagonist/inverse agonist that treats narcolepsy. Here, we find that pitolisant reverses AD-like pathophysiology and cognitive impairments in an AD mouse model. Behavioral assays and in vivo wide-field Ca2+ imaging revealed that recognition memory, learning flexib

Acetylation of Histones in the Nucleus Accumbens Increases the Expression of Dopamine Transporters to Regulate Executive Function in Sapap3 Knockout Mice.

Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is a chronic and debilitating psychiatric condition characterized by persistent, intrusive thoughts (obsessions) and repetitive ritualistic behaviors (compulsions). Accumulating evidence suggests that individuals with OCD demonstrate marked cognitive impairments, especially in executive function domains, including cognitive flexibility and working memory. Although existing therapeutic approaches (e.g., serotonin reuptake inhibitors and cognitive-behavioral therapy) can partially mitigate behavioral symptoms, their effectiveness in improving cognitive impairm…

Aberrant Medial Prefrontal Cortex Activity and Flexible Behavior in the TgF344-AD Rat Model of Alzheimer's Disease.

Executive dysfunction can precede the accumulation of canonical neuropathological markers and severe dementia in Alzheimer's disease (AD) patients often characterized by memory changes. Deficits in executive function including flexible behavior, i.e., the ability to shift behavior following negative consequences, are often mediated by the prefrontal cortex. However, it is unknown how medial prefrontal cortex activity is altered in behaving Tg-F344-AD rats, which exhibit age-dependent AD pathology and memory deficits. We tested the ability of in 6-7-month-old TgF344-AD rats to learn reward pred

Network geometry shapes the transformation of task representations across the human cortex.

Flexible cognition requires the brain to generalize across tasks while preserving task-specific information. Previous work showed that task representations are compressed in the association cortex and expanded in sensory and motor systems, but the mechanisms underlying these transformations are unclear. Here we test whether the geometry of intrinsic brain connectivity constrains how representations change between cortical regions. We analyzed functional MRI acquired during 16 diverse cognitive tasks together with activity flow modeling, finding that connectivity dimensionality predicts represe

Preliminary Investigation of Disorders of Gut-Brain Interaction and Their Associations With Psychological Flexibility and Daily Functioning in People With Fibromyalgia.

BACKGROUND: A substantial proportion of people with fibromyalgia also experience comorbid disorders of gut-brain interaction (DGBIs), which can lead to considerable personal and societal burdens. However, evidence regarding the implications of this comorbidity remains limited. The aim of this study was to investigate the occurrence of DGBIs in fibromyalgia, potential consequences for people when this happens, and a process called psychological flexibility (PF) that might help. METHODS: 395 adults with fibromyalgia completed an online survey and were included in the analyses. Analyses included

Advances in the Treatment of MELAS Syndrome: Could Cognitive Rehabilitation Have a Role?

Mitochondrial encephalomyopathy, lactic acidosis, and strokelike episodes syndrome (MELAS) is a rare inherited mitochondrial disorder, commonly due to the m.3243A>G mutation, which typically presents with seizures, headaches, and acute neurological stroke-mimicking deficits. At onset, there is often no general intellectual deterioration in these patients, although specific cognitive deficits in peculiar language domains, visual construction, attention, abstraction, or flexibility may be present. To date, there is no evidence for an effective treatment in individuals with MELAS. Herein, we desc

The dynamic connectome in Alzheimer's disease: From static snapshots to a symphony in time-A hypothesis.

The static functional connectivity (sFC) model has established Alzheimer's disease (AD) as a large-scale brain network disorder, yet it rests on a questionable assumption of temporal stationarity. This assumption obscures the brain's intrinsic dynamics, which are essential for flexible cognition. Here, we advance the hypothesis that the core deficit in AD is not merely a weakening of average connections, but a fundamental loss of the brain's capacity for temporal coordination, adaptive reconfiguration, and metastable dynamics-a state we term dynamic network dysrhythmia. Synthesizing evidence f
