Understanding how the brain processes visual information is central to cognitive neuroscience. This exploratory study investigates the potential of ultra-high-density (uHD) electroencephalography (EEG) to capture neural dynamics during visual processing. We demonstrate that increasing EEG electrode density enhances spatial precision, improves the decoding of visual information, and facilitates more accurate source localization. Using a uHD EEG system with 512 electrodes focused over the occipital region, we recorded brain responses to four visual categories: faces, bodies, objects, and pattern…

BACKGROUND: Noninvasive brain stimulation is typically delivered once daily, but accelerated protocols delivering multiple daily treatments have re-emerged to shorten time to clinical improvement.
METHODS: At the Neuroscience School of Advanced Studies Non-Invasive Brain Stimulation Challenge Workshop (Crans-Montana, Switzerland, October 21-24, 2025), we reviewed the literature on accelerated protocols across noninvasive brain stimulation modalities such as electroconvulsive therapy (ECT), transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS), transcranial electrical stimulation (tES), transcranial vagus n

How does the brain know that orgasm is coming before orgasm begins? Masters and Johnson described sensations signaling approaching orgasm, but the neural basis of this anticipatory awareness remains unexplained. The present article terms this period Erotic Intimation. It begins at the proposed Intimation threshold, when bottom-up sexual information captures attention, and continues while orgasm feels increasingly imminent, but escalation remains redirectable. Although sexual-neuroscience studies have documented cerebellar activity before and during orgasm, they have not examined its possible pr

Bulimia nervosa (BN) is common and has a global presence and burden. BN shares features with anorexia nervosa and binge eating disorder, but its cardinal feature is recurrent binge eating followed by extreme weight control or compensatory behaviours in association with high levels of weight and shape, and other body image and eating, preoccupations. The last three decades have seen advances in understanding the risk factors and psychobehavioural mechanisms of BN. These advances have informed primary prevention programmes that are effective in preventing the onset of risk factors and, in one se

We strongly advise caution in employing the term "focal hippocampal damage" in cognitive neuroscience, and highlight the need to study the significance of plausibly knock-on effects in specific diencephalic nuclei and white matter tracts within broader circuits.

A key challenge in neuroscience is understanding how neurons in hundreds of interconnected brain regions integrate sensory inputs with previous expectations to initiate movements and make decisions1. It is difficult to meet this challenge if different laboratories apply different analyses to different recordings in different regions during different behaviours. Here we report a comprehensive set of recordings from 621,733 neurons recorded with 699 Neuropixels probes across 139 mice in 12 laboratories. The data were obtained from mice performing a decision-making task with sensory, motor and co

Systemic autoimmune rheumatic diseases (SARDs), such as rheumatoid arthritis (RA), systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), and Sjögren's syndrome (SS), are traditionally characterized by chronic inflammation and immune-mediated damage to joints and other tissues. However, many patients also experience symptoms such as widespread pain, persistent fatigue, cognitive dysfunction, and autonomic disturbances that cannot be attributed directly or entirely to peripheral inflammation or structural pathology. These conditions suggest the involvement of interactions between the nervous and immune systems, w

The historical framework of pervasive developmental disorders (PDD) continues to hold relevance despite its replacement by the Neurodevelopmental Disorders category in DSM-5. Emerging evidence indicates that neurodevelopmental and neurodegenerative mechanisms, traditionally considered distinct, may intersect in individuals formerly classified under PDD. Shared biological pathways, including aberrant synaptic pruning, mitochondrial dysfunction, immune dysregulation, and impaired proteostasis, suggest potential long-term neurological vulnerability, particularly in autism spectrum disorder (ASD),

Locus coeruleus (LC) is a small nucleus located deep in the brainstem that contains the majority of central noradrenergic neurons, which provide the primary source of noradrenaline (NA) throughout the entire central nervous system (CNS).The release of neurotransmitter NA is considered to modulate arousal, sensory processing, attention, aversive and adaptive stress responses as well as high-order cognitive function and memory, with the highly ramified axonal arborizations of LC-NA neurons sending wide projections to the targeted brain areas. For over 30 years, LC was thought to be a homogeneous

One of the most common distinctions in long-term memory is that between semantic (i.e., general world knowledge) and episodic (i.e., recollection of contextually specific events from one's past). However, emerging cognitive neuroscience data suggest a surprisingly large overlap between the neural correlates of semantic and episodic memory. Moreover, personal semantic memories (i.e., knowledge about the self and one's life) have been studied little and do not easily fit into the standard semantic-episodic dichotomy. Here, we used fMRI to record brain activity while 48 participants verified stat…

How concepts are coded in the brain is a core issue in cognitive neuroscience. Studies have focused on how individual concepts are processed, but the way in which conceptual representation changes to suit the context is unclear. We parametrically manipulated the association strength between words, presented in pairs one word at a time using a slow event-related fMRI design. We combined representational similarity analysis and computational linguistics to probe the neurocomputational content of these trials. Individual word meaning was maintained in supramarginal gyrus (associated with verbal s…

How and when a concept of the 'self' emerges has been the topic of much interest in developmental psychology. Self-awareness has been proposed to emerge at around 18 months, when toddlers start to show evidence of physical self-recognition. However, to what extent physical self-recognition is a valid indicator of being able to think about oneself, is debated. Research in adult cognitive neuroscience has suggested that a common network of brain regions called Default Mode Network (DMN), including the temporo-parietal junction (TPJ) and the medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC), is recruited when we a…

In recent decades neuroscience research show the negative consequences of poverty in cognitive development. Environmental factors, such as material deprivation, exposure to stressful situations, violence, nutritional deprivation, environmental toxins may shape the developing brain. The changes of the structure and function of the brain since prenatal stages and their consequences can remain stable throughout the life cycle except early interventions are made. Research investigating have found significant link between child poverty and function and structural brain focusing on prefrontal cortex

INTRODUCTION: Central sensitization (CS) is present in a variety of chronic pain disorders, including whiplash, temporomandibular disorders, low back pain, osteoarthritis, fibromyalgia, headache, lateral epicondylalgia among others. In spite of our increased understanding of the mechanisms involved in CS pain, its treatment remains a challenging issue.
AREAS COVERED: An overview of the treatment options we have for desensitising the CNS in patients with CS pain is provided. These include strategies for eliminating peripheral sources of nociception, as well as pharmacotherapy and conservative

Neuropsychological impairments of English past tense processing inform a key debate in cognitive neuroscience concerning the nature of mental mechanisms. Dual-route accounts claim that regular past tense comprehension deficits reflect a specific impairment of morphological decomposition (e.g., jump + ed), disrupting the automatic comprehension of word meaning accessed via the verb stem (e.g., jump). Single-mechanism accounts claim that the deficits reflect a general phonological impairment that affects perception of regular past tense offsets but which might preserve normal activation of verb …

BACKGROUND: Mild cognitive impairment (MCI), an intermediate stage between normal aging and dementia, has emerged as a prominent research area in geriatric care due to its heightened propensity for progressing toward dementia. Sleep plays a pivotal role in cognitive function, with dyssomnias not only exacerbating cognitive and affective symptoms associated with neurodegenerative diseases but also contributing to disease progression.
AIM: This bibliometric analysis investigates the global research on MCI with dyssomnias over the past two decades, aiming to discern key findings, research domain

The rehabilitation effect of patients with moderate or severe upper limb motor dysfunction after stroke is poor, which has been the focus of research owing to the difficulties encountered. Brain-computer interface (BCI) represents a hot frontier technology in brain neuroscience research. It refers to the direct conversion of the sensory perception, imagery, cognition, and thinking of users or subjects into actions, without reliance on peripheral nerves or muscles, to establish direct communication and control channels between the brain and external devices. Motor imagery brain-computer interfa
