This study aimed to examine the distribution of 5-HT receptors in the human colon. 5-HT induces desensitization of the circular muscle and as this is facilitated by G-protein coupled receptor kinases (GRKs) and other proteins, we also examined their distribution. BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Emergency resection and primary anastomosis of unprepared left-colon is a controversial subject. Although this approach has been reported in several series, there is paucity of data on the relative safety of it in viable vs. gangrenous colon especially when the gut is unprepared.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: Case records of 57 consecutive patients with acute sigmoid volvulus were reviewed; there were 27 with gangrenous colon (group G) and 30 with viable colon (group V). All of them had undergone emergency resection and primary anastomosis without on-table lavage or caecostomy.

The laparascopic transabdominal preperitoneal (TAPP) repair of an inguinal hernia is an established technique associated with notably low rates of recurrence and complication. Inguinal pain and anal bleeding following a TAPP procedure may result from the penetration of the repair mesh into the sigmoid colon. In this case report, we discuss this particular complication following the TAPP procedure. Subsequently, we describe the diagnostics as well as the surgical treatment necessary.

Large bowel obstruction in the terminally ill patient can be difficult to manage. We describe a patient with sigmoid colon obstruction caused by metastatic prostate cancer in the pelvis who required hospitalization because of severe pain and obstructive symptoms. Treatment with an endoscopically placed self-expandable metal stent allowed the patient to have immediate resolution of symptoms and to receive hospice care at home.

A technique for endoscopic removal of a chicken bone impacted in the sigmoid colon is described. Using biopsy forceps, a silk tie was looped around the impacted bone and then gently pulled caudally as it exited the anus. This disimpacted the bone. There were no complications.

A 60-year-old man who developed a perforation of the sigmoid colon with ischemic change due to polyarteritis nodosa is described. Histological examination of the resected colon led to the diagnosis of polyarteritis nodosa. Although the gastrointestinal tract is frequently involved with polyarteritis nodosa, it is extremely rare for polyarteritis nodosa to be accompanied by a perforation of the colon, particularly at the initial presentation.
