Antibody to galactocerebroside can be produced in rabbits by the injection of the hapten together with a carrier protein (GC.BSA) or by immunization with the myelin fraction of brain homogenates (GC.M). The anti-galactocerebroside activity of both sera is mainly directed towards the galactose moiety of the galactolipid. Autoimmunity to platelets was looked for by complement fixation, antiglobulin consumption, transformation and migration-inhibition techniques. Only the migration-inhibition method gave consistently positive results. The test was positive in nine out of 14 patients with idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura and all five patients with glandular fever.

A 33-year-old woman presented with a two-day history of left inguinal pain and a palpable "knot." She was suspected of having an incarcerated inguinal hernia but instead was found to have lymphogranuloma venereum. The diagnosis is typically made from a history and physical examination, but may be supported by serologic complement fixation studies or by testing of lesion aspirates using immunofluorescent antibody testing.

We studied the ability of normal human serum to lyse H. influenzae biogroup aegyptius (H. aegyptius) isolates recovered from patients with Brazilian purpuric fever (BPF clone) or non-BPF clone strains. BPF clone isolates, although similar to non-BPF clone isolates with regard to the ability to fix C3 to their surfaces, could be distinguished from non-BPF clone strains by their resistance to lysis in vitro following incubation with normal adult human serum.

AIM: To determine whether B. ovis will transmit from infected rams to non-infected red deer stags (Cervus elaphus) grazing together in the same paddock.
METHODS: Six rams artificially infected with B. ovis were grazed with six non-infected 14-month-old red deer stags for a four and a half month period from March 4 to July 20, 1999. Stags were blood sampled at one- to six-weekly intervals to test for B. ovis antibodies using a complement fixation test. Stags that seroconverted were semen sampled to test for B. ovis infection by bacteriological culture.

Activation of the complement sequence results in conversion of the third component of complement (C'3) to an inactive product (C'3i) and the elaboration of additional fragments of smaller molecular weights and faster electrophoretic mobilities. Immunoelectrophoretic analysis of fresh synovial fluids with an anti-human C'3 antiserum disclosed in some a variable degree of conversion of C'3 to C'3i, but a more striking finding was an additional line in the alpha-globulin region. BACKGROUND: Brucellosis is a major cause of infertility and reproductive failure in livestock. While cattle in the Eastern Indonesian archipelago suffers from reproductive problems information on bovine brucellosis in the region is fragmentary. The control of brucellosis requires a major and prolonged effort and confirmation of the infection by isolation with detailed knowledge of the spread of the infection is essential when planning a control program.
