The Society for Craniofacial Genetics and Developmental Biology (SCGDB) held its 43rd annual meeting in a virtual format on October 19-20, 2020. The SCGDB meeting included the presentation of the SCGDB Distinguished Scientists in Craniofacial Research Awards to Marilyn Jones and Kerstin Ludwig and four scientific sessions on the molecular regulation of craniofacial development, craniofacial morphogenesis, translational craniofacial biology, and signaling during craniofacial development. The meeting also included workshops on career development, NIH/NIDCR funding, and the utility of the FaceBas

A meeting entitled, "Interferon Lambda: Disease Impact and Translational Potential," was held on the campus of the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Maryland, on October 25-26, 2018. To our knowledge, this was the first meeting that focused exclusively on interferon lambda (IFN-λ). The meeting's purpose was to enhance interdisciplinary communication and promote new collaborations. The gathering brought together an international group of scientists from a wide range of disciplines. Sessions included: IFN-λ Biology, Therapy and Genetic Variation; IFN-λ and Hepatitis C Virus Infection; I

Delivering well-coordinated care is essential for optimizing clinical outcomes, enhancing patient care experiences, minimizing costs, and increasing provider satisfaction. The Veterans Health Administration (VA) has built a strong foundation for internally coordinating care. However, VA faces mounting internal care coordination challenges due to growth in the number of Veterans using VA care, high complexity in Veterans' care needs, the breadth and depth of VA services, and increasing use of virtual care. VA's Health Services Research and Development service with the Office of Research and Dev

Onco-nephrology is an emerging field in medicine. Patients with cancer may suffer from kidney diseases because of the cancer itself and cancer-related therapy. It is critical for nephrologists to be knowledgeable of cancer biology and therapy in order to be fully integrated in the multidisciplinary team and optimally manage patients with cancer and kidney diseases. In a recent international meeting, the key issues in this challenging clinical interface were addressed, including many unresolved basic science questions, such as the high tumor incidence in kidney transplant recipients. To this en

Most cases of mastocytosis are indolent, usually cutaneous mastocytosis or indolent systemic mastocytosis (SM). Aggressive mast cell (MC) diseases are very rare and often fatal. They can develop de novo or due to progression of indolent forms and can present in different ways; either as MC sarcoma or as advanced SM which includes aggressive SM, MC leukemia, and SM with an associated hematological neoplasm. This review will describe these different aggressive forms of mastocytosis, illustrated by cases submitted to the workshop of the 18th Meeting of the European Association for Haematopatholog

INTRODUCTION: Acute respiratory infections (ARI) result in substantial annual morbidity among military personnel and decrease operational readiness. Herein, we summarize the research efforts of the Infectious Disease Clinical Research Program (IDCRP) related to ARIs.
METHODS: The ARI Research Area of the IDCRP was established in response to the 2009 emergence of pandemic influenza A/H1N1. That year, IDCRP investigators deployed the ARI Consortium Natural History Study (ARIC NHS), a multi-centered, longitudinal observational study to assess etiology, epidemiology, and clinical characteristics

The 21st Meeting of the International Scientific Working Group on Tick-Borne Encephalitis (ISW-TBE) - a group of neurologists, general practitioners, clinicians, travel physicians, virologists, pediatricians, ecologists, and epidemiologists - was held under the theme "TBE - record year 2018″. Several key topics in the field of TBE were extensively discussed, among them current epidemiological developments in different countries, expansion of risk areas, virological and clinical aspects, importance of awareness, traveling and mobility, and latest news on TBE vaccination. The main goals that hav

The year 2016 was the centennial anniversary of the recognition of the Guillain-Barré syndrome, which was first described by George Guillain, Jean-Alexandre Barré and André Strohl. In celebration of the centennial, this historical review describes aspects of the contributions of Guillain and the Spanish neurologist, Barraquer-Bordas and a brief account of the Fourth International Neurological Congress, which brought together Guillain and Barraquer-Bordas. There were many outstanding Brazilian physicians at that meeting. Finally, the author describes his interaction with Barraquer-Bordas and pr

This special article presents potentially important trends and issues affecting the field of obstetric anesthesia drawn from publications in 2015. Both maternal mortality and morbidity in the United States have increased in recent years because, in part, of the changing demographics of the childbearing population. Pregnant women are older and have more pre-existing conditions and complex medical histories. Cardiovascular and noncardiovascular medical diseases now account for half of maternal deaths in the United States. Several national and international organizations have developed initiative

Speaking at a Legionella Control Association Open Day on 9 October last year in Tamworth, Mike Quest, an LCA director and Committee Member who is an independent water hygiene and safety consultant and an NHS Authorising Engineer, presented his standpoint on effective risk assessment and monitoring of complex hot and cold water systems. He also focused on some of the challenges for engineering and estates teams in maintaining water temperatures within 'safe limits' in modern buildings, with reference to the complications he had seen in a hospital project he has recently been working on.

For academic conferences, when proposals are submit they are often judged using a rating scale on identified criterion by reviewers who have a shared interest and expertise in the area under consideration. Given the multiple and varied reviewers, an analysis of psychometric properties like rater severity and consistency are important. However, many of the problems that plague the conference proposal selection process are the same issues that plague survey research: rater bias/severity, misuse of rating scale, and the use of raw scores as measures. We propose the use of the many-facet Rasch mea

Hereditary hemorrhagic telangiectasia (HHT) is a hereditary condition that results in vascular malformations throughout the body, which have a proclivity to rupture and bleed. HHT has a worldwide incidence of about 1:5000 and approximately 80 % of cases are due to mutations in ENG, ALK1 (aka activin receptor-like kinase 1 or ACVRL1) and SMAD4. Over 200 international clinicians and scientists met at Captiva Island, Florida from June 11-June 14, 2015 to present and discuss the latest research on HHT. 156 abstracts were accepted to the meeting and 60 were selected for oral presentations. The firs

BACKGROUND: The goals of this study were to delineate the protocols employed for managing patients with cleft lip and palate deformities, delineate the challenges facing practitioners and patients, and to determine the patient and physician barriers to cleft care delivery in the region.
METHODS: Survey questionnaires were administered to practitioners attending the second Pan-African Congress on Cleft Lip and Palate (PACCLIP), which took place in Ibadan, Nigeria, West Africa from February 4-7, 2007. The conference included 225 participants, representing 17 African countries
RESULTS: Protocol
