The shikimate pathway is essential for the biosynthesis of aromatic compounds. The seventh and last step is catalysed by chorismate synthase, which has an absolute requirement for reduced FMN in its active site. There are two classes of this enzyme, which are distinguished according to the origin of the reduced cofactor. Monofunctional chorismate synthases sequester it from the cellular environment whereas bifunctional enzymes can generate reduced FMN at the expense of NADPH. These bifunctional enzymes are found in fungi and the ciliated protozoan Euglena gracilis while all bacterial and plant

PURPOSE: To study the characteristics of dry eye disease (DED) secondary to ocular or systemic infections.
METHODS: PubMed, Scopus, and Cochrane databases were systematically reviewed for DED development after systemic and ocular infections. The severity of DED symptoms and signs, type of infection, and management outcomes were analyzed.
RESULTS: Of the 28 included studies, eight were related to HIV infection, five had hepatitis C, four to COVID-19, and 11 studies had DED secondary to herpes keratitis, Mycoplasma pneumoniae, viral conjunctivitis, Chlamydia infection, Mycobacterium leprae, an

The recent emergence of the poultry bacterial pathogen Mycoplasma gallisepticum (MG) in free-living house finches (Haemorhous mexicanus), which causes mycoplasmal conjunctivitis in this passerine bird species, resulted in a rapid coevolutionary arms-race between MG and its novel avian host. Despite extensive research on the ecological and evolutionary dynamics of this host-pathogen system over the past two decades, the immunological responses of house finches to MG infection remain poorly understood. We developed seven new probe-based one-step quantitative reverse transcription polymerase chai

BACKGROUND: Several non-chlamydial microbial pathogens are associated with clinical signs of active trachoma in trachoma-endemic communities with a low prevalence of ocular Chlamydia trachomatis (Ct) infection. In the Solomon Islands, the prevalence of Ct among children is low despite the prevalence of active trachoma being moderate. Therefore, we set out to investigate whether active trachoma was associated with a common non-chlamydial infection or with a dominant polymicrobial community dysbiosis in the Solomon Islands.
METHODS: We studied DNA from conjunctival swabs collected from 257 Solo

BACKGROUND: Allergic conjunctivitis (AC) may follow seasonal or perennial pattern. There are climatic and racial risk factors involved in some types of AC. It is more prevalent in warm climatic conditions and among Afro-Caribbeans, Arabs and Asians and less among the White populations. Clinical presentations also seem to follow climatic and genetic predisposition. The purpose of this study is to determine the prevalence of AC and its clinical presentations in a hospital setting in this region in people of all ages.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: This is a hospital-based retrospective study of new pat

Primary meningococcal conjunctivitis (PMC) is rare, and it is particularly rare in older patients. Patients with PMC may develop invasive meningococcal disease (IMD), which has an overall mortality rate of 8 %-14 %. An 81-year-old man presented to us with complaints of decreased vision and persistent pain in his right eye after ocular trauma. He had copious purulent discharge, conjunctival injection, corneal edema and Descemet's membrane folds in the right eye. The best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA) was 0.02. Levofloxacin 1.5 % eye drops and fluorometholone 0.1 % eye drops, each four times da

BACKGROUND: Acute infective conjunctivitis is a common problem in primary care, traditionally managed with topical antibiotics. A number of clinical trials have questioned the benefit of topical antibiotics for patients with acute infective conjunctivitis.
AIM: To determine the benefit of antibiotics for the treatment of acute infective conjunctivitis in primary care and which subgroups benefit most.
DESIGN: An individual patient data meta-analysis.
METHOD: Relevant trials were identified and individual patient data gathered for meta-analysis and subgroup analysis.
RESULTS: Three eligible

Yersinia is an enterobacterium that causes acute enterocolitis, pseudoappendicitis and sepsis. Some patients suffer from post-infectious immunopathological complications, such as erythema nodosum and yersinia arthritis, which are well known. Less information exists concerning the erythema multiforme-like yersinia exanthema, which is a distinctive dermatological disorder with target lesions localized predominantly on the neck, shoulders and arms. These lesions, which may be smaller but often are larger than the iris lesions in conventional erythema multiforme, tend to coalesce into plaques and

Although ambient temperature has diverse effects on disease dynamics, few studies have examined how temperature alters pathogen transmission by changing host physiology or behaviour. Here, we test whether reducing ambient temperature alters host foraging, pathology and the potential for fomite transmission of the bacterial pathogen Mycoplasma gallisepticum (MG), which causes seasonal outbreaks of severe conjunctivitis in house finches (Haemorhous mexicanus). We housed finches at temperatures within or below the thermoneutral zone to manipulate food intake by altering energetic requirements of

Two groups of six cats were established, one a control group and one infected with feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV) 18 months previously. The cats in both groups were inoculated with Chlamydia psittaci and the clinical progression of the infection was monitored by means of a clinical scoring system for 10 months. Haematological, serological and viral and chlamydial isolation studies were also made. The response of the FIV infected group to treatment with oxytetracycline was monitored in the 11th and 12th months. The FIV infection prolonged the duration of the clinical signs resulting from t

The authors describe their experience with the use of impression cytology (IC) as a diagnostic aid in the evaluation of external eye disorders. IC is shown to be useful for diagnosis of epithelial cell storage disorders, infectious diseases, and allergic disorders.

Due either to Chlamydia psittaci or to Chlamydia trachomatis, Chlamydial infections are transmitted to man directly or indirectly via birds or mammals. Directly transmitted chlamydial infections may be located in the eye (trachoma, inclusion body conjunctivitis), the urogenital tract (above all urethritis but other sites are possible) or in the ENT or respiratory systems (giving rise in particular to atypical pneumonias). Reiter's syndrome (urethritis, conjunctivitis, polyarthritis, enterocolitis) and lymphogmauloma venereum are two more examples. Combinations of them are not rare. Indirectly

Trachoma vaccines are usually assayed by testing their ability to protect monkeys or baboons against subsequent challenge of the conjunctiva with a pathogenic strain of trachoma/inclusion conjunctivitis (TRIC) agent. In such experiments the course of infection in vaccinated baboons was compared in terms of arbitrary scores assigned to a range of clinical signs, and of counts of TRIC inclusions in conjunctival scrapings. Analysis of many such scores indicated that after a large challenge dose of strain MRC-4s, the scores for signs of inflammation reached their maximum earlier than the follicle

Extrusion of the scleral buckle is one of the complications patients may encounter undergoing the surgical treatment for retinal detachment. We present two cases of persistent Pseudomonas a eruginosa-related conjunctivitis which infected the silicone explant after retinal surgery. One of them is a 73-year-old Caucasian female patient with hyperaemia, intense pain and mucopurulent discharge. After the conjunctival swabs detected a P. aeruginosa infection, she started both topical and systemic treatment without any results; for this reason we opted for the buckle removal always under systemic th

A 20-year-old man presented with bilateral ocular discharge and conjunctival injection. An ocular culture revealed Neisseria gonorrhoeae with decreased susceptibility to multiple drugs, including ceftriaxone. The patient was successfully treated with doxycycline (100 mg), which was administered orally, twice a day, for 7 days.
